How heavy is a big wave? An incredible amount of water threatens the life of a big wave surfer, with just the lip of some breaks weighing more than 300 small cars. Australian Storm Surfers Ross Clarke-Jones and Tom Carroll charge some of the heaviest waves on the planet. In this clip, they break down the mathematical details on how heavy big waves actually are when athletes take them on the head.
"A lot of guys that surf big waves are a lot fitter than me, but they don't have that natural spirit to just go. It's just a charging mechanism or something," says big wave charger, Ross Clarke-Jones.

the whole measurement of the weight of the water a tad daft (and the weight 1 cubic meter of seawater can vary quite a lot due to saline levels.), also are not going to have all that section coming down on your head since its a liquid the only relevant part is the actual water that would hit you on the head, Then mixing Imperial and metric measurements is just fucking dumb, they wanted to make is sound more dramatic than it is, but them chargers are still all nuts and i have great respect for em.
@dudemanismadcool
@dudemanismadcool 7 жыл бұрын
yeah it is daft but the measurements were conservative. Water alone weighs roughly a tonne per cubic meter and salt water always weighs more than that.

It also doesn't make sense to factor the groundspeed of the wave into the impact force, since the surfer is moving with the wave over ground. I mean the whole angle of the clip is the power of big waves in relation to surfers, not lighthouses.

Alex Betten All respect to the surfers, it sure is dangerous but the physics is pseudo. You can't arbitrarily use the weight of a 20m section of wave - the surfer is only hit by a fraction of that. 70km/h free fall - guesstimate. Bursting lungs? It may feel that way but lungs don't burst in these situations.

@@alexxxbe75 the weight of a cubic meter of water wouldn't apply in the same way cuz the lip doesn't appear to be 1 meter thick where it lands and once the water breaks it becomes super aerated and wouldn't be as dense as cubic meters of still water and a 20 meter cross section wouldn't be relevant and stuff like that

I don't doubt the wave weights that much but with my experience as a amateur surfer a big wave crashing on top of your head doesn't feel like tons of water, i assume that it's because water is a fluid and not a solid object, so in reality that wave falling on top of you won't kill you, what might kill you is the reef or rocks under the water. Would love for someone knowledgeable to explain the science of this.

+Silkaz7 I surfed Teahupoo a couple times in 2010. Just recently again. Teahupoo means "cracked skull" or " skull crack". Like you said its only because of the reef. I hit the reef hard and light. I fell down and did a wash cycle inside a massive barrel. I would whole heartingly say i would rather fall into that barrel then hit the reef again. Scars and scars

haha thats how i feel in 4ft waves sometimes. This is beyond comprehension until you get held down for a minute, dragged across the reef or slammed into the bank and then try to figure out whats hurt and most importantly which way is up. When you add half a million tonnes of weight, being 20% more bouyant because you are in salt water...haha yeh that makes absolutley no difference in massive swell. They would be wearing at least 4.3 wettys that would help alot though.Dont relax though, swim.

Great footage. Impressive to watch. But still pretty dumb video. Water is liquid, not solid. So the weight of a 10 meter wide wave does not fall on top of a surfer. Surfing in these monstrous waves is very impressive and surely dangerous. But the silly numbers about weight are ridiculous.

Water is heavy. One gallon weighs 8.33 pounds. I've had to carry 5 gallon jugs up 4 flights on US Navy ship. That's over 41 pounds. I can't imagine all that ocean water surrounding me. It's intimidating for sure. I'll stay inland, near the desert and forests. Props to the gals and guys who live for it. ^.^

Not taken into consideration on this scientific analysis is the human body is approximately 70-80% water and therefore lighter and more buoyant in the surf. It's still a load of water coming down on you but just have to let your body rise to the surface when falling off the board and staying cool, calm and relaxed in what feels like a washing machine.

I call bull shit on the lip weighing 400 tons... If you see what 400 tons looks like it doesn't add up to the size of that lip. You're talking about 30+ full sized african elephants lined up back to back, and the size would take up waaaaaay more than just that lip.

Have you ever heard density? lets say, you have a cup of water and you weighed it. Then you get a cup of oil and weigh that. The cup of oil would weigh more because it is more dense even though it occupies the same space. The maths does add up.

400 tonnes is 400 tonnes, but the laminar flow of the water will allow it to not crush you like a 400 tonne solid object. It's quite misleading in how they present the volume of water in relation to it impacting the surfer. Yeah it will fuck you up but not the same as a 400 tonne solid object.

at the regular beach, when a tiny wave crashes around you, it's nothing. If a giant wave hit you rather than crash around you it'd break you in half. Seems about right i've always wondered what happens if a big wave hit you.

Not at all. 1 cubic metre is 1000 litres and since 1 liter = 1kg, that gives a ton. Every ten metres you descent under water adds 1 atmosphere of pressure (1 bar).
