@@michelleg4069 , building a house, in Florida, is still possible. You just make sure that the house is built to withstand category 5 hurricanes. Also, build so that the first floor of living is high enough to be higher than a category 5 hurricane's tidal storm surge. If you build at an elevation high enough to be a non-evacuation zone, make sure that the foundation is high enough (1 to 3 feet probably) that the tropical rain doesn't flood your house. For any ground-level garage or storage space, install French drains.

Yes. I'm amazed that people buy new houses with the living area directly on low ground. For low ground, houses need to be built with the first floor as a garage and the living area on the 2nd and above floors. People buy houses with the living area directly on low ground. Their homes get flooded every time there's excessive rain or there's anything above regular tide. Then, they must replace sheet rock, carpet, furniture, etc.

I have lived in a hurricane hot spot for 33 years and have still never have had flooding in my home. Worse I ever had was my apartment roof coming off but..I had just moved out 2 months prior.

@@CuNguyen-ct8nk Yes, I've lived in a hurricane-prone area for decades. I have never had flooding, from high tide, because I live far enough from the beach and high enough in elevation. Other people, who bought low enough in elevation, have high-tide flooding at least once a year. What little flooding, that I get during rain storms, was easily solved by installing a French drain.

@@jessicaheger1880 i read on the NOAA web site in “Storm stories” section : That opening up the doors and windows to let the force of the waves flow through the house. rather than battering down the structure was a measure that long term residents on the gulf coast would take against the foundations being undeminred. during a storm surge. Houses did remain standing after the waters receded. .that was back in the days before weather forecasting and residents ould wake up to find the gulf of mexco in their front yard.

This is what happened to my sister’s house with Matthew and just when she had gotten the renovations finished and got back into her home for just two weeks, Irma hit (only 10 months later) and did it all again. No one understands how destructive water can be until you go through it. It’s horrible.

Florida has a pretty resilient grid system with most of it underground (it’s still underway) but in the last 15-20 years you’d lose power in a tropical storm, now you’ll keep power unless it’s a massive storm or you live away from the bigger cities

I don’t know if these folks are new to Florida, but everyone knows to put hurricane shutters on the windows in a storm or hurricane event!! This is especially true if you live on or near the water. Had they put metal storm shutters on their windows and patio The water would not have blown through the glass that way, inundating the entire house. I hope their insurance company doesn’t give them a problem, because they did not at least try to mitigate the potential loss. This is very sad for these people. 😢

Definitely would recommend unplugging those electronics and turning off the lights/power. I would not recommend standing in the water since it is full of sea creatures, nasty stuff, debris, germs, bacteria, prasites , viruses, and etc

Pinellas county parks have gators. I lived in Dunedin which was in Pinellas County a little up above coat closer to Tampa Bay area. I didn't have them in my yard, but parks have them! It is on the gulf coast.

They are fully stocked with alligators and snakes AND.., with all of the ocean coming in and flooding those bogs & marshes.., all of those wetlands are becoming a good bit like an opening into all of the lakes & rivers in Florida! 😐 So, maybe it wasn't like that before? The situation could be that they have a hospice patient in that home who died due to flooding and they have no money causes of med bills and no insurance. Maybe someone got laid off so they are ultra broke then the hurricane happened. We just don’t know. I understand people should always try to be grateful, however it is extremely tone deaf to not know the specific circumstances of others situations but understand severity of the situation and still tell someone to be grateful. If we are only on the outside looking in then we don’t know how much this has impacted them. For all anyone knows they might be homeless…. But people expect them to what? Be grateful for their life’s getting turned upside down? 99.99% of the time, a person will be devastated when these disasters hit NO MATTER the circumstances and that’s okay. However it’s not okay to be tone deaf to others.

This woman was very fortunate that she had a second floor to take refuge on, but in some places even the second floors were wiped out. You can see multiple homes in drone videos where only the ground floor stilts were still standing, with nothing atop them anymore.

I am a pool contractor. Out on the islands of Sarasota everyone's pool pump was submerged in salt water as was a lot of the electrical outside. From Helene then milton a week later. I can't believe the amount of people who think it will just dry out and work again😂. Every single pump is shot. Also the worst place to be standing is in the flood waters..... think about all the live electrical in one floor of a house..... get the hell out of there!!! Why do people do this?
