Personal theory: the reason I think people latch onto twerking, the harlem shake, planking, and owling (not dances, but follow me on this) is that we have a population of people waiting for permission to be weird. They know we live in a free society and they can act however they want whenever they like, but they are so terrified of judgement that they wait for trends to pop up just as an excuse to do something they could have long ago. We are all nerds, but most of us are in denial and wait for trends to tell us when to be happy with our freedom.
