Story Behind the Stone is a short documentary film that follows the journey of a gemstone as is passes from hand to hand, all the way from a mine on the plains of South West Madagascar to finally reach the hand of one of Madagascar's leading ladies fighting for women's rights. The film takes a positive and constructive approach, looking into the impacts of the small scale gem trade on a personal level and the affect that capacity building has there within.
This film was produced by Lawson Gems (www.lawsongems.com) with the support of the Tiffany & Co. Foundation through the Gemstone and Sustainable Development Knowledge Hub (www.sustainabl..., the University of Queensland's Sustainable Minerals Institute (smi.uq.edu.au/) and the University of Delaware's Minerals, Materials and Society Program

Thanks, I actually filmed this 5 years ago so hopefully I have improved even ore since then 😅. I really hope to get back to Madagascar some time soon, but unfortunately, even though the export ban of gems has been lifted, no new process has been instituted, but hopefully we'll get back there as soon as the industry is sorted out again and get back to fully supporting our initiatives over there 😁.

Wait how comes the biggest stone she found was $1000 and she shared the profit so surely they didn’t get the right price
@Lawsongems
@Lawsongems 4 жыл бұрын
it all depends on the quality of the stone. Though given that this was from before her training with us, chances are she didn't recieve as fair a price as she could have, however that one stone did make a huge positive difference to her life.

They should sell on eBay directly
@Lawsongems
@Lawsongems 2 жыл бұрын
We had thought about this however, many services we take for granted in the developed world, like Ebay and Paypal, are not available in Madagascar and shipping costs are very high out of Madagascar not too mention an incredibly difficult export process. We are working with industry members at the moment trying to provide advice to help create a more simplified export procedure, but it is not a simple task to institute such great change unfortunately, but we will give it our best!
