The People’s Car
The Volkswagen Beetle is a car that every person can relate to in some way. With over 21 million VW Beetles produced it is a car that touches the hearts of car enthusiasts worldwide with its iconic design, robust engineering, making it an obtainable vehicle for the average working person. Designed by Porsche, it was the brainchild of Adolf Hitler to help create an affordable car for the German people. Ironically, years after the war, the car went from being a fascist leaders fantasy to representing peace, love, and being open-minded.
This is the story of David and his 1963 Volkswagen Beetle. After meeting David and learning about his relationship with his VW Beetle, Fueling Therapy embarked on a project to tell his story through film that we hope inspires others as much as it inspired us. You will learn of his families rich history of how much the Volkswagen Beetle means to them.

Love the history behind the 63 VW and that it’s In the family. It’s rare to see one in that condition. I miss my VW’s but after watching this I might have to get another one and keep it around for my daughter 😉. A 63 Ragtop Bug is what we would get 👍🏻 . Thanks for sharing your story.

Awesome video! I own a light blue 63 bug. 5 previous owners before me, bought it from a old fellow who had it parked in a barn since 1988! "Ran when parked" he said... Brakes were seized and all the rubber parts had to be replaced, but the engine cranked over. After allot of work it passed the safety inspection with flying colors in april 2020 and I drove over 5000 km that summer. Nothing beats driving a bug down the road a hot summer day listening to 60s-70s music. I love it.

Sweet VW my Dad bought a 58 and a 63 brand new My Mom said he was so happy with the horsepower upgrade in the 58 when my parents were dating mother used to drive through the Catskills Mountains up state New York and she said she would get tired watching him shift so much lol he always got the A.M. radios and would tap on the drivers roof to the beat of the music i remember the 63 having dents in the roof from him playing as he drove i also saw the first Herbie the love Bug at a drive in theater in the 63 my Dad laughed hysterically over the movie and i remember it was the only time i got to eat in the car my Mom said the 58 loan payments were 65 dollars a month and the 63 was just over 1800 dollars which to them at that time was a lot of money out of a cereal box i got this plastic counter thing and everywhere we went i counted VW Beetles on the road if my parents didnt hear me click for one i missed they would both tell me a blank color just went by the only thing that messed me up at night time was 6 volt Willys jeeps otherwise the Beetle headlights were easy to spot in a distance coming at us on the other side of a highway

My dad bought a new '63 Beetle for my mom. Black, whitewalls, radio, that's it. $1,325, total. Always started in the winter, no matter how cold. Didn't produce heat until you cleared 3-4 miles. You could fill the tank for $4, really. While it is true there were few creature comforts, the car got to you like the family dog. I still have reverence and a soft spot for the tyke. It always ran well. German engineering by Dr. Porche. Tell ya, if I lived in the burbs and had a two-car garage, I would find one in top shape and run it now and then....

I was greatly touched by this story and it warmed my heart. In 1984 I acquired a Candy Apple Red 63 Beetle. It was a 1 owner car and the estate sold it as the owner had passed away. I was most fortunate to have bought it. The owners manuals from 1963 were all present and there was a note saying his name was Thomas. He totally fitted his name. A little car with a great presence and very handsome too. I removed cloth seat covers revealing perfect original vinyl seats in a 2 tone grey that had never been sat on. I kept him before on selling him a few years later. He was a real head-turner. Today I have a Toffee Brown 2014 Beetle called Bobby and I am never going to sell him. Love a good Beetle story.....there are many. Beau NZ.

1963 is my favorite year of Volkswagen Beetle. Beautiful little car. Unfortunately they are very hard to find stock. So many idiots remove the bumpers,lower them,put stupid looking wheels on them.

Must be a '63 made after August, as that is most certainly a '64 model.

@Skizze37 You are 100% correct. My 1963 Wolfsburg Edition VW had quite a different engine compartment hood. The original cowling above the license plate was smaller, a semi-conical shape. The one in this video has a later edition hood with a wider lower profile rectangular-ish cowling, 1964 or later. Perhaps an owner previous to this young man's Grandfather-in-law replaced that rear hood? But since its color so perfectly matches the rest of the car (inside and out), and after all of these years of possible exterior unmatched fading not noticeable, it seems certain that this is not an actual 1963 model year Beetle, sorry to say. The original bill of sale might be dated in 1963, but most likely in the last 2 or 3 months? Nevertheless, it's great to see just how much this happy young guy enjoys owning and driving it while taking such great care of it, too!

I bought the same car new in 1963, same color too. I paid $ 1300.00 cash. I was nineteen at the time. Got good use out of it, really fun to drive. Today at 77, I drive a VW GTI, even more fun to drive. 🚙

I owned 4 early 60's bugs, a '61, two sunroof '62s, and a '63. My dad also had a '60. BTW, your bug should have the '58-'63 round headed license plate light.

what a great video. you can see that it still has some natural aging- well cared for and still 6V- awesome!! a few nice options, like radio, door handle recess guards, key on the column instead of the dash board. @ 1:46 it shows a Nov '62 date but the title showing Feb '63. Likely the body was produced in late '62, but assembled and finished in early in '63. I have the same with mine only a year later...i have a '63 body that is titled/VIN stamped Feb '64 with matching numbers.
