I'm enjoying this series of deep dives (get it?) into historically important watches. If you ever see a Tuna on the arm of a person out in the street, you can be certain that they are a watch enthusiast. Nobody outside of our community really knows about these watches and they certainly can't understand why someone would pay so much for a quartz dive watch. But we watch nerds can and do.

Very good video. Yeah, to me the Seiko professional dive watches have always been the ultimate statement in technology for real world divers, while the Submariner or Sea Dweller have been more of tuxedo jewelry "divers". :) The Seamasters being something in between the Seiko and Rolex.

I used to have the 1980 titanium quartz tuna. It had a case twice as thick as most watches, and the straps were ridiculously long for my 6-1/4" wrist. You had to have full scuba gear on for it to look natural sitting on your wrist.

Saturation divers live in a compression /decompression chamber for a period of up to 28 days..During this time they breath a gas mixture of 98% helium 2% Oxygen .. The average automatic diver watch, at some point needs to be synchronized due to minutes lost over a week or so.. Helium will always be present in dive watch cases.. The critical period is during decompression of the divers back to surface. This can take days and sometimes up to a week depending on how deep they where diving..During this time if the watch is not submerged.The helium escape valve must be opened to avoid crystal pop.. The preferred models have a automatic escape valve like the Rolex Deep Sea dweller.. I have known Omega Sea masters to fail in Saturation often.. Basically sometimes divers forget to open the release valve.. Helium incursion is unavoidable ...

SOMETHING PHYSICAL: i am not an exter BUT i dont think the helium penetration into the watch occurs during the dive. The important notable fact about saturation diving is that the diver has to spend up to 7 days inside a decompression chamber. a chamber where the pressure in air atmosphere is artificially raised to that of the bottom and then slowly decreased over the course of the time. It is in that chamber, that the partial pressure of helium which is part of the natural atmosphere seeps into the watch. because while the watch might be water resistent at 20 atm or 60 even or whatever, it is not sealed against that high outside pressure of air. so the air (especially helium) seeps into the watch as soon as it enters a decompression chamber. then upon lowering the pressure it comes back out. the watch is under stress and eventually gives in. If anyone has a better understanding/knowledge and/or can attest that what i said is complete BS PLEASE TELL ME HERE. thank you

Older manual Sat systems often had a non linear deco curve … that’s putting it mildly. The pressure bumps occasionally were very severe … this would cause He molecules trapped in the Watch to expand rapidly and risk blowing the crystal off from the inside. An escape valve is a poppet valve which releases at 3 bar over pressure. He will seep into everything…. Including bad fillings in your teeth . If someone’s escape valve popped … everyone’s hand went to their mouths;)

Maybe a dumb question: how could Helium get in the watch while diving? Isn't water hydrogen and oxygen? No offense meant, I'm trying to understand.

I wear mine. The lug distance is 23mm less than my wrist's bone structure. My wrist is 8.75" on a cold day, or right when I wake upin the a.m. Hot day, working out, riding mountain bike, closer to 9.0". I like wearing it. Most "large" 42 ~44 mm divers (my own Seiko's included) look rather small on me. As usual, YMMV. Nice video.
@hobbyoftheday40176 жыл бұрын
I found it interesting/ slightly funny when he says only 600 meters water resistant. As an novice diver with just a handful of dives 600 meters is a staggering number considering recreational diving stops at 165 feet, only 50 meters. Still a great and well made video that makes want a tuna badly, however one of the 300 meter versions is more in my price range.

I've always thought that while coating a watch with ceramic to increase scratch resistance made sense, ceramic shrouds made no sense, as ceramic is brittle. A ceramic coated steel or titanium shroud would make more sense.

You know, the spring drive tuna has me torn because it fits two of my desires. 1) Higher end Tuna 2) Spring Drive- The movement is hard to get and expensive to obtain. As you said, the watch is a bit of a bastard when it comes to the history of the Tuna.

Why do they make them quartz, once changing the battery there is risks with pressure testing!?
@ahmadaamer63 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is correct. Just like getting an automatic watch serviced, Seiko hopes you take it to a watch maker to have the battery changed. A good watch maker will pressure test the watch after a battery change.

Good effort in explaining Seiko Tuna but lotsa minor mistake here & there. Helium ingression do not happen during dive but when professional divers live in a prolong period under a diving bell where they breath a mixture of Oxygen, Helium & Nitrogen. The added helium is to reduce the ratio of Nitrogen to prevent narcosis. The redesign hands first appear in SBDB008 which is first SD Tuna to commemorate the 100th anniversary ok Seiko's watch making in 2013.
