I think Cody is pretty cool, but I would have loved him to keep more of that punk aspect rather than a Dick’s Sporting Goods advertisement hahaha. I do think he looks really handsome here, but I think they could have still drastically redesigned him and still made him keep some of his old features. The mohawk, the bandage, the strong frame but toned down to match the proportions of the other characters a bit more…You know, either way I’m still happy with how it all turned out, even if I will miss Cody’s mohawk

I would always marry Marlin when I played and I’m actually incredibly excited by the change. I always liked his personality but was never big on his appearance. I was probably like 10 the first time I played it and was confused by the greaser look. Due to there being so few bachelors he was still my favorite option so I just got over his appearance and married him anyway and got very attached to him over the years. His old design will still have a special place in my heart but to see him 16 years later with a modern look has me incredibly excited.

I always loved Marlin too, which my brother made fun of me for because of his haircut, but we both played Another Wonderful Life and he married Rock. 🤮 He's one to talk about taste. Honestly, I don't mind the changes. As long as his personality is the same, I'm happy. He was a complete sweetheart and I feel like he was underrated ☺

Rock was who I married in Another Wonderful Life because his design was the only one I liked of the guys, so seeing him get zero changes besides HD graphics is hilarious to me. That said, I think I'm going to try to pursue new Cody just because I'm interested in the new personality. If not, I might just marry Rock again.

I think what it is with Muffy is she's in an a-line dress, so her features are rounder (she doesnt have as slender of heels or the hourglass waist). Absolutely agree, I always married Muffy when I was a kid because that scene on the bridge where she talks about being lonely just struck a cord with me. I could never bring myself to leave her by herself. I am so, so excited for this game, it was the very first one I played, during a very turbulent part of my life and forever changed it.

I'm still surprised that they redesigned Cody so heavily instead of introducing Griffin or Carter as the new bachelor because I know that they were really liked by a lot of people and plus you were able to marry them in Harvest moon DS Cute so it would have made sense to me. Don't get me wrong I think the redesign is fine but yeah Griffin would have been awesome as a bachelor imo

Plus I know lots of people have always wanted to marry Cody. To be honest I kind of wish Skye was added but I also think adding him would be a major departure from the original games feeling.

I'm glad that they redesigned the male characters, but I wish that there was a balance in the redesigns. I remember when I was little, I was wondering why the girls had such cute designs.... I mean, the male character design had a lot of character and I loved that, but at the same time, I thought it was unfair (especially since Rock had such an easy to hate personality so it felt as if those interested in the bachelors only had 2 options). Though I did love getting to know them and looking beyond their looks. Why couldn't there be a balance of both cuteness and personality to their design for both the bachelors and the bachelorettes. :/ (I feel like this issue is prominent in a lot of media though)

Well the main reason for that is probably due to the fact that the game came out first with the male protagonist only and had only bachelorettes. They released another wonderful life later on with a female protagonist and picked 3 males to be the bachelors without really changing their personalities or anything since they were originally non-marriageable by design. At least that's how I rationalize it in my head.

Like now she looks like she's doing some kind of manual labor job, vs in the original where she was kind of a slacker

I still can't believe they changed Cody so much! I like how he looks but just like you said he's basically a completely different character. I'll miss the weirdness his old design gave to that area of the valley but I guess I'll have to wait and see if it's a good change or not. I'm still very excited to play though!

Tbh I like Cody or Gordy redesign. Something about it reminds me of all the characters I tend to marry in other harvest moon or story of seasons games. Like I Kurt, Luke, Ludus, Neil, etc. He reminds me of those characters for some reason and just like how i married them. I'mma marry Cody.

I think all the name changes just made the names more similar to the japanese names. Like Mathew/Marlins name in Japanese is basically Mashu which is closer to Mathew than Marlin. I played the original and I was really sad to see some of the character changes but a friend of mine who only got into story of seasons recently flat out told me she would never have played the new game if they looked that weird. For the nostalgic fans the changes might be sad but if I try to see it through my friends eyes I guess I can understand why they made so many changes. Most new fans would not think "original" Cody looks like a nice character. And original Murrey probably "traumatized" her

I know what you mean, but Marlin/Matthew has no technically no Japanese name. It's Matthew. They just use katakana writing system to write it out phonetically and that goes for all foreign/borrowed words. I can see how you can easily misread foreign words in katakana though as sometimes they don't sound phonetically correct when you compare to the original word in the language it's from, but Japanese phonetic is limited. 😅

Oohh such a shame! I think the character design actually IS what makes the game so charming and unique. I'd even come as far and say it's the best in all the harvest moon/SoS timeline. They managed to make everybody stand out so much that us "older players" can vividly remember than even though it's been 10 years+ :)

I wonder if marrying certain characters will give perks to the farm. Like Cody gives you access to certain equipment, Celia/Marlin giving discounts at Vesta's, Muffy gives discounts at the bar, etc. I know that wasn't an option in the original but you never know with Nintendo. Harvest Moon: AWL was my favorite Gamecube game ever and I hope this remake is worth it!!

It might be an unpopular opinion, but Another Wonderful Life’s marriage candidates felt much more natural to me. The marriage candidates felt less manufactured, if that makes sense. In a typical Harvest Moon game, all your candidates are very ‘safe’, in that they’re all pretty attractive and cute, but in a slightly bland sense to make them moreuniversally appealing. They are designed from the ground up to strike someone’s fancy so that the player will want to date them. So you won’t have a marriage candidate with Gustafa’s giant nose, as an example But the bachelors in AWL weren’t designed that way. They were just normal townsfolk that then got picked to be marriage candidates when they decided to make Another Wonderful Life. So you had this assortment of weird and quirky people that weren’t really attractive in the same sense as the bachelorettes were, and were never designed to be. It felt more organic, and less like a ‘hot singles in your area’ situation. I thought it added to the charm that is pretty unique to the AWL games.

You are right but Im gonna be honest as a heterosexual girl I just don't like An of the dateable male characters. Not their personalities nor their looks. Gustavo was the only one I was OK with. I only liked the non dateable male characters like Cody and the scientists dude. So I'm really happy that Cody is dateable now and even looks really good. In older games I only played as male since I loved every single choice

The fact that the 3 bachelorettes were all gorgeous supermodel like while the bachelors were all either ugly, old or annoying never felt "natural" to me. It just felt like they made the game for a male straight audience and then remembered that girls also played the games and decided to take the only guys that weren't old enough to be the farmer father and turned them into bachelors.

I've never played A Wonderful Life, but have heard a lot of good things about it so it was such a nice surprise seeing that it's coming to the Switch, finally giving me and most certainly many others a chance to play it for the first time! By the way, same goes for Rune Factory 3 and Tales of Symphonia, those among many other exciting announcements made me love that Direct so much (glad I wasn't the only one judging by your reaction Wilder that I watched yesterday)!

I feel that Muffy "Molly" has a much more innocent looking design. Whereas in her original, especially with her eyebrows, she seemed almost like she would be the "mischievous" wife. Cody's was definitely a huge change, I think there was a thing about his original design actually being related with a type of stereotype for Japan at the time when it came to people with darker skin, so they probably changed it this much as a way to change the stigma they had. As for Gustafa, I married him in Another Wonderful Life, but I was disappointed that he didn't move in with the character, if they change that for this version then I'll marry him again. I'm also wondering if they'll keep the Mr. Pots method for choosing a son or daughter that they had in the special edition, and possibly different colored horses. Anyway, I was so pumped for this game when I found out about it.

I always wanted him to be, even in DS cute when they added more bachelors and he wasn’t one :( I love his redesign as well, might be an unpopular opinion, but I do! I love his old look, but I think it’s better suited for a villager vs a bachelor! His bachelor look is adorable, and besides, everyone used to complain that the bachelors were so lacking in looks in comparison to the bachelorettes! While I adore his original unique design, and I wish he was stronger looking like before, I do like his new hair and outfit a lot more :) Marlin looks so much better. Always loved him as a bachelor, the hard to get farmer, but hated his hair specifically, lol. Glad he looks at least a tad more approachable

Marlin/Matthew took me a while to get used to, but honestly I'm pretty happy with it! The character art itself doesn't do much for me but I think his actual in game model better resembles that old Marlin feeling, with the longer chin and posture. I do wish they'd kept his hair either curly or black though! Or at least let him keep his sideburns. I feel the same about Cody's redesign, I mostly like it but I do wish they'd kept more elements from his old look; he looks a little too much like a jock imo, but I'm still happy to marry him! It's also really nice to get a black marriage candidate too. Weirdly Gustafa is who I dislike the most, and that's mostly because I don't like his new eyes! I know you won't see them that much, but you can see them pretty well when he's in profile and I really don't think they fit him! I really wish they'd made him look scruffier. And the girls all look perfect of course; my only nitpick with them is that I prefer Muffy/Molly's old hair more. And personally, I really don't want them to make new characters to marry for this game; I was really not wild about the new people added to the Mineral Town remake. At most, making Flora or Griffin marriageable would be fine (or throwing Phantom Sky in there, because the idea of that character is so funny to me lmaooooo) I'm just very attached to the town setup in the original game and I worry that any new characters that get added won't gel with old ones. I think the trade off for having fewer marriage candidates means that you have much more in depth relationships with the ones that actually are there (like remember there was just a ton of marriage options in Magical Melody but none of them were interesting besides Jamie? I'd much rather take fewer, better written characters)

They could've done so much with him as a redesign, I mean he was a phantom thief that broke into buildings and if he was caught would say something like chick-beam fire or cannon and would disappear or something. I would've loved to see them do something with his long silver hair and weird af outfit really...

I was really excited when I saw how close Celia, Muffy, Rock and the other designs were to the originals, but the Gustafa and Cody changes really take me out of it. It's not so bad, but I liked Gustafa's old look, and he probably isn't bald now which is a bummer. Just more sort of generically handsome pretty boys. Plus no Griffin is a real shame. I'll always have the original so I don't mind much but I'm a bit more lukewarm on it compared to when I first heard about it. I think Nami and Marlin's redesigns were a better sort of way to go about it, I can tell who they are even if they've been remixed a little, even if I miss Marlin's hair.

WAAAAA super excited for this! A Wonderful Life was my first game and the one that introduced me to the franchise/genre. Not my favorite, but it definitely has a special place in my heart. I love how it looks so much brighter now, a lot more livelier than the original. Love the redesigns, but Cody and Gusta definitely need some getting used to for me. As someone who married both Marlin and Gustavo in the original, I adore their new designs! I adored their personality but if I was honestly I only liked Rock's looks but his personality was an issue I could not get over when married the first time that I legit restarted and married the other two instead which is why it funny that he wasn't changed. LOL! But Marlin getting rid of that greaser hair is perfect like he enjoyed working with PLANTS why does he look like he should be working on cars??? And Gustavo was basically that roaming hippie look which wasn't bad but the nose.... The nose was too much and glad he cleaned up. But I will miss the funky hat tho. And yet I still chose them over Rock because I loved their personality so much. The Artist and the Farmer were just such sweethearts so I'm super happy at this change but also I DID NOT RECOGNIZE CODY AT ALL. I CONFUSED HIM FOR A CERTAIN DAD THAT ALWAYS WORKED OUT A LOT BECAUSE WAS SO DIFFERENT. I loved him he was such an artist, but I do like the redesign- I just hope they kept his personality. Or he might as well be a new character.

Marlin was my favorite of the bachelors and although I love the original and maybe prefer it just a little more, I think the redesign isn't bad and is probably good for new players who didnt experience the original. I still definitely like the redesign and overall its probably for the better in the long run!

Ok so this video is how I found out about Cody's redesign and I am shocked! Hahahah. Cody was one of my favourite characters in the original versions. I loved how funky and tough he looked, but was actually a sweetheart. As for my opinion on the redesign - I wish they could've kept some of the original elements, but otherwise I like it. Honestly, if they kept his mohawk and the scarf he wore, and redesigned the rest, I think that'd have been perfect. As for his personality - I really hope they don't touch it. That was the best thing about him!

Marlin to Matthew from the name to the redesign makes sense. The pompadour isn't the hairstyle used by delinquent students in Japan anymore, so it'd be extremely dated(so I hear), which is also why with the Japanese live action Yu Yu Hakusho coming out they changed Kuwabara's hairstyle. In the old games it's who I'd go for because he was the least ugly. I prefer Molly, because a mix of muff being a term for.. something lewd-ish, and the Japanese name being/.. Mumu, it's one of the beter options. Personally I'd prefer Mimi for her. Nami is perfection.

I always felt like guys had it easy in AWL because all the girls were cute. Not one of them you looked at and thought "UGH, is there no other option?". Super excited for Cody/Gordy. He will be the first I marry and our child will be beautiful. >:3 Gustafa's redesign makes him easier to look at. He's not some possessed garden gnome come to life with a nasty beard anymore. And Rock... I like his pants and shoes better.... Here's hoping he's not a total butt anymore. But I'm sad to see such a drastic change to Marlin. He was my favorite out of the slim pickings of male options. I wish he had slicked back hair or something of a bad boy vibe to him. The hair down makes him feel soft and his furrowed brow says less of "I'm a lovable rebel." and more "I left my glasses at home.". I weep for my greaser husband and the car we never had for him to work on.

I love that Celia/Cecelia didn't change much. Im a sucker for the sweet girl next door type bachelorettes (Popuri from Friends of Mineral Town being an example). In the original Wonderful Life, none of the male bachelors really caught my attention. But now, Matthew is quite the looker if I say so myself! As well as the revamped Cody! I'll definitely have different save files for each bachelor's/bachelorettes.

I think the name Molly suits Muffy pretty well! I never liked Marlin, so I like his revamp into Matthew haha! I’m glad Celia and Lumina are essentially the same, and I am very happy with how Rock is! I have a soft spot for Rock, and I’m especially glad it seems they’ve given him a subtly darker skin tone, which I always felt it odd when he was portrayed as paler in DS or fan stuff etc. I WISH we had Flora as bachelorette again, and I wish we could have Daryl for bachelor…! Tho I’m nervous what will become of Daryl

It makes sense that they changed a lot of the Male Batchelors because in the original game you played as a Male only and they weren't designed to be the main love interests, they were just random guys in the town. Unlike the main 3 original female love interests (who had different features and therefore produced different children) there wasn't that much variation with the males. In Another Wonderful Life, the female version, they basically retrofitted them to be male love interests after the fact. And at least Gustafa and Marlin looked wayyy too old for the MC. So its cool that they got a bit of a rework. And Cody looks awesome even though I'll miss his original "scrapyard artist" design. Also on a side note I always found it a bit strange to play the special edition of AWL with Lumina as a marriage option, I got major pedo vibes going after her, so its cool they tried to make her look a bit older for the remake.

I remember when I went to look up the redesigns myself, one article referred to all the original bachelor designs as "crusty" (which, kind of agreed, but they probably wouldn't look too bad with current graphics!). I was never a fan of Marlin, but it would've been nice to keep his greaser style,, or at least his name! But Molly/Muffy is my favorite girl! I think what looks strange about her is her hair isn't as big? Her original hair was so solid, whereas now the tried to make it flowy and that certainly makes it look a lil bit sparse. Definitely love her so much though and I hope they keep the little curler-wake up scene!

I love the way Cecilia looks in the new version, just like the original, but better. Form Marlin to Matthew, that's a whole new character, and it's an incredibly dull new character. I don't mind the changes to the face, but I wish they kept some of the greaser style tbh. Muffy to Molly isn't bad; I just wish her eyebrows were more arched like the original game model to give her more character; again, it feels like they're dulling down the characters quite a bit. Also, is her beauty mark gone? And I like the name Muffy more. I kinda like that they got rid of Gustafa's beard and flattened his hat; he gives me Shaggy vibes. I do wish they let him have a longer nose, though, more dulling down. I like the old Nami; the round hair is much more unique than the messy hair, and her face looks so friendly now, but I liked how edgy and cold she was in the original more. I like the changes they made to Rock, good job. I like that they made Lumina taller, makes the relationship with the character less creepy. I wish her hair was slightly shorter, like a Haruhi Suzumiya bob kinda style. Cody looks cool, I just wish it wasn't Cody. Like if this was Cody's Son or something and Cody still existed in the game, that'd be better IMO. Overall, I think the characters and the game look great but feels very sanitized from the original. Part of what made the originals so great was how unique the characters were. They're getting the same anime face syndrome. I appreciate them making the male character candidates more attractive, but I just want them to have some unique features.

I never had any budget to buy any of the games growing up, I was able to play the first Harvest Moon, and the very first Story of Seasons but none of the other ones. I loved watching HM or SoS let's plays, I never got to play A Wonderful Life. I hope you can make a Lets Play.

I'm so glad about Cody's redesign. The old design was based on the thug stereotype that many of the Japanese audience had back in the day. While it was nice that even back then the game developers made Cody to be a sweet guy on the inside as to show that one shouldn't judge a book by its cover, the truth was that many people did and would go through the game completely avoiding Cody. Those that didn't avoid him, didn't want him to be a bachelor because he appeared to be significantly much older than their character or found him too unattractive to desire anything else outside of friendship. Remember that the game was made to be played by children and children were taught to avoid scary looking strangers. When i first played this game i was a small child and not only did i avoid him, i finished the game with as little interaction with Cody as mechanically possible to finish the game. My friends did the same because he was scary looking. So from a design perspective Cody needed to be redesigned because if you make a game that has social interactions as an integral part of the game but have your targeted audience be scared to interact with one npc then the game's good intention gets bypassed.

I'm so sad Flora can't be waifu but I really dig Nami's redesign the most. Marlin and Cody had way more personality and charm before their redesign. I miss Gustafa's hat and beard. Other than that it seems like they weren't trying to take too much out of the original while making it more child friendly.

I've always loved Nami but never did a playthrough where I married her. Not sure why so I'm definitely going to do that first in this remake. Love her design and I love how more masculine they made her Even though it's a small addition I'm really excited to play as whatever I want and marry whoever I want. I know it may be silly but growing up with this game if I wanted to marry the bachelorettes I'd always have to play a guy, pretty common at the time though. So I'm excited that adult me can replay this game from my childhood as myself :)

I like Marlin/Matthew's new look quite a bit, actually. He was ALWAYS the one I married, but it was never due to character design - it was because he was the only bachelor that seemed... Useful, for lack of a better word? Maybe 'productive'. Little me thought Rock looked lazy and airheaded so he'd be no help, and Gustafa seemed like he had no real interest in helping on the farm and would be doing his own thing instead. Granted, it's been many years since I've played the game and I was quite young when I did, so my perceptions may well be wrong, but that's what I thought. I'm excited to have Cody as an option, I'll probably go for him first when I play!
