Dried pineapple is better than any candy I've ever eaten. It's amazing! Loved this video. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so no way to grow a pineapple here. But, it's fun to watch you do it and I'm so happy for you that you get to enjoy those pineapples so fresh and perfect. Maybe someday I'll get over to the Islands and I'll have a real pineapple, too. Aloha!

Because the pineapple needs very little soil to grow I used to fruit them in California in a five gallon nursery pot. I used an unheated greenhouse to shelter them in the winter there. Sadly, even though they would fruit they would never taste like the ones that grow under the Hawaiian sun. Enjoy and if you ever hit the Big Island in August and September look for my sign, the first one is free!

I tasted white pineapple on a boat trip while visiting the Big Island with my family about 10 years ago and could never eat a yellow pineapple or any pineapple at the mainland since then. And the crew wouldn't tell me where to get them from, they said they buy all the fruits for their trips. Thanks for the reminder!

The white pineapples re grown by small farmers locally across all the Islands. The Big Island was the first place they wee introduced and so have the greatest number of growers. The fruit is highly seasonal. We are pretty high up the mountain but at my place they fruit from August to September. You are right, they are the best damn pineapples I've ever eaten.

Whether you call it Kapoho White, Hilo White or White Sugar Loaf it is one of the best pineapple I have ever eaten. The ones I have here are the 'Rough' version that make 7 offsets per fruiting. It appears the fruit is larger than the 'Smooth' version.

Well I am going to try and grow pineapple (white if available) here in Victoria BC. I have a greenhouse and we are in zone 8 and even have a little micro Mediterranean climate here...the small Discovery Island group just south of Victoria even has cactus growing there. This species are the farthest Northern ranging cactus in the world. Got any tips for growing PA's here in the Canadian Galapagos??? Great video now off to buy 5 pineapples:))

Five is the magic number, it may bring you fortune. We had cactus back in the Midwest USA too. Opuntia fragilis was the main type, a paddle or beaver tail type of prickly pear that can shrink down and hide beneath the snow cover in winter. I have seen it survive -40 c. Tips on pineapple pot culture. Use a very rapid draining medium and water only in the leaf funnel during the winter. Keep the soil as dry as possible when temperatures are cool. You can rot a pineapple off with wet soil if the growth stops. If they are growing actively they will drink huge amounts of water. The pineapple isn't too greedy for nutrients but a balance time release fertilizer is required in container culture. Just remember to bring them into the greenhouse before fall sets in and bring them out doors after danger of frost is over.

You just have to love something that didn't cost a dime. I actually have plans for a new loop driveway here that will have an official produce stand and a nursery. In the mean time an old saw horse and a folding table in the carport will just have to do. I am a bit short on the eight to ten grand it will take to build the real thing with picnic tables, coffee and a TV to roll my videos on.

Nice pineapple story, but - No hurricane stories? Did you folks do OK in the storm?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
Joan, The hurricanes passed us by, they usually do because of the deep ocean waters around the Island and the huge mountains. These beasts need warm water to thrive and the Big Island has deep ocean up welling near the shore. No Hurricane as ever made landfall here in recorded history. We did receive a huge amount of rain from the storm though. Hilo had the wettest August on record. Here is a folder of photos from the storm. www.flickr.com/photos/ellenseye/sets/72157673158867056/

I did not know the Big Island has never had a direct hit hurricane (in recorded history)! Kauai certainly has! But, Hilo has endured a tidal wave or two hasn't it?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. Kauai is an old Island and has lots of shallow warm sea around it from the Island having eroded away to a fragment of it's original self. The warm water draws the hurricanes to it like a magnet. The Big Island is the tallest sea mount on earth. If you measure from the sea floor it is the largest mountain on earth, 33,000 feet. This kind of depth makes the waters almost impossible for heat loving hurricanes. If there is one natural disaster that can take you life on the Big Island it is the Tsunami. The Island has been hit hard several times. A few towns and settlements have been abandon because of it. The danger is only to locations on the shore lines. I am 1600 feet up Kilauea and in the location you would escape to if a Tsunami hit. We will be serving Poke', Mai Tai, and local coffee with malasadas during the next Tsunami, drop in!

Good show! I got some White Jade Pineapple that is from UH - you are supposed to be able to eat the core. I wonder if it is the same?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
Ross, The names placed on the Hawaiian white pineapple are many and confusing. I am pretty sure there are only two main varieties of it here in the Islands. The smooth and the rough forms. The smooth only make a limited number of off sets the rough make up to 7. I was just at the Hilo USDA Tropical Fruit repository discussing pineapples and found in their collection of many dozen types they only had one white and it was doing poorly. I offered them mine for the collection. Since the USDA didn't introduce these I believe the original beginning was informal and private party. Near as i can figure the fruit got here under the name White Sugar Loaf. It appears to have been first grown in Kapoho and was called Kapoho White. Later it came to Hilo and was called Hilo White. Eventually it made it's way to Kona and they call it Kona White. I just call it white to keep life simple. Whether the smooth and rough forms happened here as a sport or they were brought in that way i cant say. You are correct, the core is very low fiber, can be eaten and is often the sweetest part of the fruit. I will often eat them like a Popsicle. they can be frozen on a stick. White Jade is also a pineapple name I have heard used but not much in this area. White jade claims to be a Hawaiian introduction but so does white sugar loaf and all the other dozen names used. The name Jade appears more commonly on Kauai. It is seldom used on the Big Island. If we have a real expert out there that can help educate me on this mess of white pineapples I am open.

Since I moved to Hawaii full time last May we have used the fish three times. All the pineapple in the video only got the chicken manure during planting because the grew while we lived in the mainland. We expect to have bigger and better pineapple now that we are with them everyday. My experience with this crop is it will grow on less fertility than most fruit. It is not a very hungry plant. It also takes drought pretty well.

The pineapples take about 2 years to fruit. Miracle fruit take more like 15 years. I have three miracle fruit bushes but it will be years before I can eat them with pineapple. My experience with the fruit is it makes lemons taste like syrup and super market strawberries become edible until the berry wears off.

GreenGardenGuy1 I just started harvesting my first miracle berries and white pineapple this week! The miracle berry was bought at a few years of age I think they are around five years old now. 1/3 fruited, only about 5 berries. I think it's prolly better with the more acidic yellow pineapple.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
Wow, sounds fun. I remember the first time I ate Miracle fruit. Lemon juice was like drinking maple syrup. I had never considered why my hands get sticky cutting lemons until that day. They are loaded with sugar but they are so acid you can't taste it. Our white pineapples are low acid so they probably wouldn't be improved much by the berry. Might lose their edge. The culinary possibilities of the berry are huge. I just wish it grew faster. Hard to make a commercial venture out of it. Aloha, Bill

I had nice crops of bananas when I lived in Northern CA so you should have it easy in the Southern end. The yellow and the white pineapples grow the same so what goes for the one goes for the other. The only difference is most of the yellow are bred to be "smooth" (have few suckers), the whites are often "rough" (lots of suckers). Mine make 7 off sets for each fruit.

There is more than one white pineapple. It appears we have two or three different races of it here in Hawaii. Mine is the race that was supposed to have been introduced here as White Sugar loaf. It has been around Hawaii long enough that it now has at least 1/2 a dozen different names. It first got to Kapoho and was called Kapoho White, later it made it to Hilo and was called a Hilo White. Eventually it traveled to the west side where it was called a Kona White. It appears that the Kauai White is also the same fruit. In the mean time a couple other whites arrived here. One of them from Hakalau is larger, has a very tall top and colors to full yellow skin when ripe. Our white is fermented by the time the skin turns yellow. A friend in North Hilo has a white with red skin. Whether these are sports of the original or different types is hard to say. Plants in Hawaii tend to travel hand to hand so it is hard to find origin stories. I have 36 different pineapple varieties that I planted in an experimental patch. They are beginning to produce and I expect a few more white fleshed types will arise from these. I have a yellow fleshed sub acid type from Florida that fruits in 12 months. This plant is exciting and I am propagating it.
@Enonymouse_
@Enonymouse_ 6 жыл бұрын
My first pineapple is about 8 months along I estimate, it benefitted greatly from the scorching spring and summer. Is it true they only produce one fruit per a plant? I hope to buy a few more and experiment, they seem to be fairly low maintenance once they settle into their new pot homes.
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 6 жыл бұрын
Other than delicious, profitable and productive the main reason we grow pineapples is the relatively low input compared to many other fruit crops. The mother plant only a single fruit like most bromeliads. The mother also produces basal and ratoon suckers as it fruits. These are used to replant and expand your planting.

The season here on the Big Island is August to Oct. depending on your elevation. On occasion we get a few outside that window. I judge by size, color and smell. If it looks full grown, is starting to turn from green to a tinge of yellow and smells like a pineapple it is ready to pick. Ripe fruit snap from the stem with a gentle bend also.

I've never tried but I believe it would take an APHIS certification. That's where I shoe the AG dept the slips, they inspect them make me spray so not survives in the box. It get sealed and shipped after customs paper are drawn up. The certification cost $65 US. Then we have postage to AU. Then I figure I want something for the slips, the travel time to inspection and the other BS involved. These would get to be pretty expensive. It's up to you, if we can, I will do it. How are the fires? Looks awful. Aloha

Hi Bill, great video. This plant seems to be perfectly adapted for your climate. Did you ever consider germinating some seeds, so that you would have a little more genetic variation instead of all clones on your property? Just in case a pest, disease, or root rot thing would come by? Apparently you can find the seeds in the skin of the fruit, or does that work differently for white pineapple?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
Pineapple requires a very specific Humming bird to pollinate it. Because of the history of pineapple farming in Hawaii the importation of humming birds to the Islands is illegal. Seed in pineapple is considered a real negative. Usually only fruit from the Caribbean will contain seed and is considered second rate. If I didn't have so many other things going on here I might be interested in figuring out how to artificially induce pollination in this fruit. I've been so busy planting, growing and selling them that I haven't given a lot of thought to breeding them. Guess I'm going to have to get myself a long beak and a pair of battery operated wings! Bill
@zokowawa
@zokowawa 8 жыл бұрын
Aha, I see, I didn't know that. But that is perfect, it means you'll only get top quality fruit without the seeds now, and once you are settled you may try to pollinize one of them as a side experiment, once you get the birdsuit ;-) Great!
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
Most of my hand pollination has been focused on crossing varieties of dragon fruit. Since bats are the major pollinator of this plant it is much easier to find a Batman suit as Halloween approaches.

Hi Bill, is this something can be found in Bay Area? I really want to try it. Will the plant survive in the Bay Area condition?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 7 жыл бұрын
I would say the first problem will be finding the plants in California. While I lived there I used to sell the plants but I moved to the Islands last May. To raise the fruit in the Bay Area you would need a greenhouse. The plants will grow out doors between May and September, the rest of the year they require shelter from cold. I did ripen pineapple in California while living there but the climate isn't right for producing quality fruit. Hawaiian fruit will always taste better because of the weather here.

White Pineapple season on Hawaii's Big Island is August to September. There are usually none available in December. Even if it was legal for me to ship pineapple to the mainland the fruit would be fermented by the time it got to you. They have little acid and do not ship well that is why people on the mainland do not know them. It is legal for you as a tourist to buy local pineapple and have the AG guys at the airport inspect it for legal entry into the Mainland. My best suggestion is to take a trip here in September and carry the fruit home yourself. For me I have to make a 45 mile round trip just to let them look in the box before I mail it. It would be the most expensive pineapple you ever ate.

There is always something missing from my list. When folks ask me what I have while I am at the computer I seldom recall everything that is out there. We are harvesting coffee, abiu, sweet potatoes, chilies, lettuce, cacao, custard apples, Jicama, lemons and limes at the moment too. We just finished digging peanuts and harvesting sweet corn. I am very close to a kohlrabi harvest. I never seldom mention the sweet potatoes because I do not raise them for sale. This is our food. Right at the moment I am spending more time planting fresh crops than harvesting. Kale and sweet corn got planted this past week with cocoa planting an ongoing project.

They are an excellent crop here and packed with energy and nutrients. Learning different ways to use the food helps. I still eat plenty of rice here though. I get tired of eating the same foods all the time and the California rice is really cheaper here. Sometimes cheaper than in CA. To grow sweet potatoes you need to have land that has ash soil rather than lava here. The lava has too thin of a topsoil layer to support them.

About how many pineapples do you sell in a season/ year?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
About 500 this season. We put in a couple hundred more plants this year so the amount being sold will continue to climb over time. I didn't actually start out with the idea of going into the pineapple business. We just wanted to grow some. This variety produces a lot of off sets for propagation so we planted them all. Before long we ended up with so many pineapples we had to sell them. Selling pineapples was the solution to a problem rather than the goal of a plan. We have begun to take them seriously. They grow well here and the market for them is good. Bill

GreenGardenGuy1 what is your annual rainfall and how months of dry season if you have one well defined?
@GreenGardenGuy1
@GreenGardenGuy1 8 жыл бұрын
Eastern Hawaii doesn't have a dry season worth talking about. Mostly rain falls evenly through out the year. The Leeward side of the Islands get a dry period in the winter but the windward side gets rain almost everyday, year round. We get about 120 inches of rain per year here. That sounds like a lot but since most people catch their drinking water from rain and the soil drains extremely fast we consider 60" of rain to be a drought here. Most of our rain falls through the night.

I am not sure how many tropical locations raise this particular pineapple. I never eat one until I came to the Big Island of Hawaii. Here it is grown in small batches by local farmers. Down by Pahoa they call it the Kapoho White, in Hilo it is called Hilo White and in Kona they call it Kona white even though it was in Kapoho for 50 years before it made it to Kona. It is a hand to hand crop.

Sushi here is some of the best because we have excellent fishers that bring in raw materials every day fresh from the sea. Our off shore water is about as good as it gets these days. Check out Poke' though. this is the traditional Hawaiian form of sashimi. It is spreading to the Mainland these days. I like to eat it for lunch at the local fish market. Yes, nature here is beautiful, we have active volcanoes, coral reefs, rain forests and two huge mountains with 9 out of the 11 climate zones found on earth. The wild chickens have taken over the local Post Office. They hang out in the parking lot. Some poor chick came to my car door the other day and pleaded with me to take it home because it was an orphan. The original birds were brought by the first Hawaiian's. They are descended from South East Asian Jungle Fowl and sort of resemble the Auracana of South America.

Do you have any white Pineapple Suckers or tops For Sale that you can ship out? If been trying to get them but they don’t sell white pineapples or the suckers for sale in Canada. I couldn’t even find them online. If you don’t have them or can’t ship them to Canada it’s fine. Thanks a lot

I have the plants but the minimum mail order from my nursery is $100 US. I have never shipped to Canada so I am not sure about Canadian plant regulations. There is a small increase in postage.

Yes prices have gone up considerably over the years. White Pineapple fruit is available August to Oct. The slips are July to October. I live in Mountain View on the big island.

White pineapple didn't sound good to me either as I always had yellow. But white sounds delicious!

The Hilo White is one of the finest pineapples on earth. Try one you will never go back. In Hawaii you can get the standard yellow for about $3 each. The local white is $3 per pound. They often scale up to 6 pounds. Three at least.

There is a solution to every problem. In our case the solution got us a fine dehydrator, some spending money and introductions to my neighbors. It was a good way to start the meet and greet, who doesn't like the pineapple guy?!

Hello my friend,, u have a very good problem,, do u sell seeds or pineapple tops for sale,, I’ve been a long subscriber to ur channel and would be willing to pay a premium plus shipping for either seeds or tops. Because the humming bird is illegal in Hawaii we do not produce seeded pineapple here. The bird is the only pollinator of the plant. A few of my best varieties are flowerless and would never seed anyway. I can sell the slips from the white pineapple in season. Usually August to Oct. is the time for slips. Due to the long drive for me to get legal inspections I require a minimum $100 order. Use my email for more information. greengardenservice.net

No legal way to export this pineapple without sending it to an irradiation facility. I do not own such equipment. The fruit is very low acid and does not ship well. 48 hour shelf life. Best to enjoy this fruit next time you visit the Big Island.
