Legendary Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell grew up stealing clothes from a thrift store and even stole from a commercial airline This is the hilarious story of Been Caught Stealing the 90s alternative rock classic from Ritual De Lo Habitual which signified Jane’s as the Godfathers of Alternative Rock.

One of my favorite interviews ever is Perry Farrell from Jane’s Addiction. One of the most entertaining, deep thinking and hilarious artists in music. He has been called the Godfather of Alternative Rock. Perry Farrell was born Peretz Bernstein in Queens New York and grew in the state before moving to LA to chase his rock and roll dreams. Inspired by the Beatles the Stones,James Brown, Zeppelin Iggy Pop, Bowie and Lou Reed, and some how incorporating all of their entries into his persona, Perry became the front man for the post punk band PSI COM. He was very much a part of the LA scene and became a part of a close knit community of musicians with bands like X, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fishbone, Minutemen and more.
After releasing their highly acclaimed self titled Debut album released through indie label Triple X records which began a bidding war between the major labes with Warner Bros winning. in 1988 the band released the classic records Nothing’s Shocking with it’s evocative album cover created by Perry himself and featuring many unique songs including Jane Says about Perry’s Friend Jane who was the inspiration for the actual band name. This put Jane’s on the radar as they kicked the door of modern popular music down and set the bar of what rock would be over the next few years. Ritual De Habitul came next going into the 90s full of 90s music hits you couldn't ignore. It was of course a precursor to the grunge and alternative movement that would become a tsunami of change.. Ritual featured another controversial album cover.
Thank you for watching. First time I ever saw or heard of them, Sept 27, 1988 Jane's Addiction (from USA) at the Camden Palace in London for 1 quid ($1.50). My roommate, who was from Orange County, said "you gotta go see this band!!!". The best live set that I've ever seen. Unforgettable. A fan for life!

I love Perry so much. He seems so humble and kind. Also, my friend and I went through a bit of a klepto phase when I was about 13. It went on for a few months until I got caught by my mom. I felt so terrible having to explain myself to her that I never stole again. I remember my friend playing the song for me one day and he was so excited when he said, "That's about us man!" We were such goofballs.

Me too, same age and everything except my mom wondered where I was getting like, Walkmans and boom boxes even though it was a gift from my goofball friend who stole a better one. We would just put on a walkman and "walk right through the door" with no batteries in it, just pretending to be listening 😂 We'd take a HUGE BOOM BOX and, use some receipt and put it in a bag and, just throw it up on our shoulder and, "walk right through the door" . Twice I think. That was big stuff. I only got caught when my "novice friend" took a pack of cigarettes from a promotional rack of Marlboro 25s , and I told him "don't take lights, there are only 3 packs , she'll know. Take regular, that ones full. " So he didn't listen and, we 'walked right through the door" but, the woman came out and had us put them back. She was disappointed. "I'm always so nice to you guys and, you steal from me? " She asked us not to come back. I felt bad for disappointing her, and pissed because this kid didn't listen to me or we'd have been fine. So I literally "been caught stealing ONCE" and, still it's more like my friend got me caught. Perry said he was 'a bit of a klepto" right? I could have money, and be in line buying something, and just steal a tube of chapstick just for the rush of getting away with it. That was probably a 6 month phase, and I never stole from people. I wouldn't steal a pencil from someone's house right? Shoplifting just was just part of my teenage rebellion. It was the 80s too. Today there are camera's everywhere so I'm sure it's more difficult. I couldn't have gotten away with 95 percent of my teenage years nowadays 😂✌️🎸🎶

I also remember the first Lollapalooza in Lake Fairfax, VA. It was the first music festival I ever attended. I was with friends and seeing many of my musical heroes on the same stage that day was surreal. It was so blistering hot that the festival crew were throwing free water bottles out into the crowd to help out. Siouxsie and the Banshees and Jane’s Addiction performed after sundown. Absolutely epic from beginning to end.

This is a great interview! I sawyer Jane's Addiction at City Gardens in Trenton New Jersey, when they first came out. Outstanding show. Perry was wearing a purple jumpsuit with a zipper down the middle. At one point, he unzipped it and showed his bunghole. A lot of people were giving the finger and screaming "FAG" !!!! It was too funny. And then the show ended, and their tour bus was parked behind my car, so we had to wait to leave. They finally came out and we said "GREAT SHOW, MAN!" Perry says "glad you liked it". Then the roadies carried out the bass player, who was obviously fucked up. Lmao, good times 🤣

My memories of this song involves breaking the law, but it wasn't stealing. It was drag racing. I always had a hot rod car and had to prove I was faster than the other guy. I had that tape in my stereo in my Chevy Monza with a V-8 when a GTO pulled up next to me at a traffic light. Ooh boy was I ready! When the green light hit the gas got smashed and we were on! Running side by side with a '69 GTO! Couldn't ask for more! Same situation a couple years later after I'd done a V-8 conversion in an S-10. This time it was a '78 Z-28. He challenged me and I knew I could clean his slate! Green light, GO! I blew his doors off, but a cop saw it. Catch me if you can! He didn't, but it was still a thrill! (Never) Been Caught Stealing, but close enough for me! That was back in the early '90's. I lived The Fast and the Furious and Street Outlaws before they were mainstream material. I had my own soundtrack.

@@ProfessorofRock I might have told this already, but my introduction to Jane's was during the summer of 1989. I live in Canada and our buddy went to school in Middlebury College in Vermont, while our group went to more local schools, spread throughout the Maritime Provinces. Our buddy, although was alienated from the many "below-the-radar" Canadian acts that toured our University campuses (ie. Tragically Hip, 54-40, Pursuit of Happiness, Northern Pikes, Grapes of Wrath), but he also introduced us to acts from south of the border that we would never get up hear on Much Music. The summer he brought home the cassette "Nothing Shocking" it changed everything. Another buddy, and future roommate that fall, "Stole" it from our friend and we played that all Frosh Week fall of 1990 I have to admit I did not like it at first, but after hearing it played (no choice) everytime we had people in our room tipping a few...happened once in awhile... I fell in love. Two friends who lived across the hall were dirt poor students but scrounged up enough between them to purchase "Ritual delo Habitual" when it was released that fall, October I think(it was before they became known to the masses with Been caught Stealing). By the time November rolled around, myself, my roommate, and two other people went to Colby College in Maine to watch our buddy play in a hockey tournament there. On the way I picked up Jane's Addiction's original live recording for Triple XXX they used to shop around their sound to the Labels (November 1990). It was the same buddy who introduced us to Jane's in the first place. When we talked to him after the game we had brought down some Canadian beer for him, and showed him that we had ALL of Janes stuff on tape....he was pretty impressed

Which had Dont want to wait anymore which hit #35 then "Talk to You Later " which hit#6 .I saw them here in Las Vegas the one time they came through with her in tow. There's been a wide array of music artist that have left us over the past years. To hell with that the past 4 months. Maybe you don't know the names but you will know the voice! Thanks ProRo and fellow classmates for reading 📚 this post.

Saw them in 1989 at UCSB's Harder Stadium and then in 1997 at the Sacramento Mem. Auditorium with Flea on bass. Damn glad I did. Such an enigma of a band. So powerful and weird. Very hard to pigeon hole or find adequate comparisons. Unique.

The idea of putting the stocking over his head just fit in with the song because he looked like an old time crook! This song was my intro to Jane’s Addiction. The song and video are equally iconic. Perry’s a genius and a hell of a talent.

When I was younger there was this Korean owned store a few neighborhoods away. Kids would bring a Boom 💥 Box📦 blasting this song 🎵 when they turned on the song they would go Wilding snatching things. Until the owners grandson told them that people were stealing. 2 + years !

Jane's Addiction was the band that got this metalhead to pay attention to alternative rock, and I will say that the progressive overtones of the second side of Ritual also caught my ear (I was, and still am, a big fan of Rush). I kept my CD copy of Ritual well hidden from my very devout Baptist parents for obvious reasons! It was also a bit interesting being the only Jane's Addiction fan in my friend circle in the small California border town where I grew up.

I really enjoyed watching the person in the video put on the pregnant outfit and steal with it. Also I used to play (we called it) stick-ball with the SAME kinda ball when I was 7 I got hit in eye with the stick accidentally.. 1/4 “ from blinding my eye. Memories. The music reminds me of the punks and surfers I knew

my friends and I were huge Jane's addictions fans as teenagers. still are huge fans. I was so happy that we got to see p**** for pyros at the first Woodstock anniversary concert in 1994. they were amazing. another place that I remember a Jane's addiction song was when Bridget Fonda is dancing around in her apartment in the movie "singles". "three days" is playing in the background.....True hunting's over.....no herd to follow.....❤

My memory of this song is so specific. I was at a college bar with my boyfriend and a group of friends. The bartender took over the taped rock music and put this song on super loud. Everyone in the place started bouncing and singing along, and the bartender was dancing and losing his mind. Then he played it again right after that. Haha. It was that good of a song that you just had to hear it one more time. I’ll never forget it.

I was in 7th grade when I actually started stealing all of my sister’s money ($30 worth) and spending it on candy at school. My mother got so mad and made me do a lot of chores to earn that $30 back for my sister.

At the dawn of the 90s until the station became a victim of its own success and started playing less from Gimarc playlists and more Arbitron dreck: George Gimarc and the legend that was Dallas’ 94.5 The Edge was my intro to ALL of the good stuff, including this one. I’d catch something good on the radio and within the next day it would end up in the Alpine, cranked up loud! This particular CD single came from Autobahn Records on Lemmon Ave, a place which disappeared in 1993 and is still missed.

I saw Jane’s at a show in Rhode Island when I was pregnant with my daughter in May 1991. Some yahoo threw his sneaker on stage and hit Perry with it. He stopped the show and just unleashed on the clown. I seriously thought the show was over but thankfully Perry was a true musician and “the show must go on”!

Great song, my favorite of theirs. Perfectly embodies the spirit of its time, being young and irreverent, enjoying life as a poor person 😆. (Not saying I shoplifted, just that I recognize and was a part of that whole Southern California culture at the time that it represented).

JA was SO cutting edge back in the day... from the VERY FIRST listen they made me sit up and REALLY take notice... I was just into my 20s and an artist making my way... their music made me feel like there was something REALLY BIG coming over the horizon that would change EVERYTHING... I kept waiting... I kept listening... but as the years went by and JA went more and more silent... I had to let that vision die. Even today, it makes me sad that they weren't able to hold it together and develop more as a band. Happy to have the memories though.
