I talk about my experience with the Physics GRE in 2016 and discuss the multitude of factors that go into taking that exam successfully.

At the end of the day, there's so much that goes into completing a PhD program that has nothing to do with the GRE.

This video is so important~ obvs not a physicist but I feel like I learned so much about the inequities in physics using a metric that is so variable.

Hi Lillian! I’m glad you think so. It really is hit or miss with that exam :/ One argument in favor of the Physics GRE I always hear is that it helps in particular with decisions regarding international students since it might be hard to translate their course grades to a US grade scale. I also hear that international students tend to do amazing on that exam in comparison to American students on average, which seems to highlight some major disparities in Physics Education taught in the US vs. Worldwide.

Taking the GRE in a week (*sobs*) Totally agree that this is more a test of test-taking strategies than of the qualities that make a good physicist

Best wishes on taking it! Do your best, but like you said, performance on it doesn’t make or break you as a physicist!

Thanks for the story, I have this deep thought of whether I should go for graduate school for mathematical physics but the thing I know that puts me off along with the cons of a phd is the GREs. hahahaa

It definitely doesn’t feel like a valid assessment of your skills in physics. I think one of the hardest parts that wasnt mentioned is the level of arithmetic required. For most questions trivial number crunching is the most time consuming.

Hi Everyone I am interested in getting admission in PhD physics so mostly university are not accepting Gre PHY in this pendamic year .so is it benefitial for me to applying with Gre general ??

I wish universities would make it so that if you get above a certain percentile on the Physics GRE, you automatically get accepted into grad school for a physics masters path, but have to pay tuition. And then if you wish, you can do the whole 3 letters of recommendation thing to get a full-ride/TA/Research stipend like all Physics graduates get now.

NiBi Paying tuition for Master’s Degrees in the USA is already an enormously high cost in the tens of thousands of dollars. I know people who have done it, but the amount of debt you’ll accrue is ridiculous. Most people I think would be better off going into the workforce after college and then try to apply to a PhD program later or earn enough money/find a job that could sponsor you to get your Master’s.

Kyle Kabasares 4 years of undergrad costs more than 2 years of grad school.
@KMKPhysics3

@@_Nibi I'm not denying that, but adding that additional cost of paying for a Master's degree will dissuade many from pursuing it on a purely financial basis alone. The amount of debt one can accrue from both a Bachelor's and Master's degree can easily exceed $100,000, which is a huge factor in deciding if pursuing graduate physics is worth it.

Kyle Kabasares I still think cost aside, it should be an option.

I am interested in quantum mechanics and quantum computing.I am from India. I supposed that UC Berkeley California will be great option for me. Will UC Berkeley take a decision to cancel general GRE and Physics GRE in next two years?

Here’s a link to UC Berkeley’s Physics PhD program’s Frequently Asked Questions Page: physics.berkeley.edu/i-am-a-uc-berkeley/prospective-student/graduate-admissions/graduate-admissions-frequently-asked it appears they are not requiring either exam for their upcoming admission cycle and possibly beyond.

Could I get a PhD in the US after my BSc? I would get a BSc in Astrophysics by 2022 in the UK which is 3 years long.

if a mechanical engineer take the physics gre,and get some good scores,is there any chance that he can switch to theoretical physics for masters and phd????I am a mech eng and I want to do pure physics,....is there any other way I could do..

Yes you can enter a physics PhD or Master's program if you have a degree in a related stem field like Engineering, Math, Chem or even CS.

Yes! I know a few people who did a degree other than pure physics and ended up doing a PhD end in physics.
