There is too much ignorance, bigotry and hate in the world, too little understanding and acceptance. It is easy to think that hatred and discrimination are only out there in the streets, in the demonstrations and violence and terror we see on the news every day. But the ignorance, meanness and discrimination surrounds all of us every day in small and large ways, quietly and loudly, no matter who we are. We are here, all of us, not to dominate each other, but to coexist - plain and simple.
This is Izzy's true story, one of the only Jewish girls in her town. She was never all that religious - her parents never forced her to go to Temple or Hebrew School - but she still believed in it, and liked being Jewish.
In elementary school, all the other kids started going to Church. For Izzy, there was nothing wrong with that, she believed that there was true freedom of religion, everyone could practice whatever religion they chose - BUT, the kids in her class didn't really see it that way.
Kids overhear what their parents say, and they actually do listen in Church. And some of what her friends and classmates seemed to take away from all of that influence and those overheard ideas was that if someone didn't worship the way they did, and pray to their God, that person was going to go to hell. The other problem is that kids don't just learn from what they hear grownups saying, they also imitate what they see and believe.
Kids started coming up to Izzy on the playground and telling her that Jews were trying to take over the world, that they were money hungry hogs who were going to hell, awful, terrible, and ignorant things. She was bullied. And Izzy knew that it was their parents that were saying these things because she knew these children didn't have that kind of hatred in their hearts. Hate was learned.
Izzy wasn't alone in all of this - all the muslim children were also singled out, bullied and discriminated against in mean terrible ways. Other kids told them they were terrorists, that they were connected with the people who were behind the 9/11 attacks on the world trade center.
Izzy was young, and it all made her feel awful. She would go home a cry by herself in her room because she thought she was going to go to hell because she didn't go to Church like all the other kids at her school. She even went to her parents and asked them to take her to a Church every Sunday before she even knew what it meant.
Izzy had always embraced her religion because she felt its goodness, that it brought people together with positive and loving messages, but now she wanted to go to Church out of pure fear, from being bullied, and through the pressure of ignorant and unaccepting people.
Her parents taught her acceptance, that people believe in different things and they all have that right to believe whatever their heart and heritage tells them. Izzy was taught that what people's religious beliefs are should matter only to them, that it is okay to have different beliefs and those beliefs cannot make someone a bad person. But what does make someone a bad person is telling other people what they can and cannot believe, who or how they worship,
Izzy doesn't hate - regardless of belief or religion - but she just wishes that someone would have told the kids in her town not to repeat the terrible and ignorant things they heard - anti-Semetic and Islamophobic filth.
Izzy remembers in middle school, when they were teaching about the middle east and told everyone in class that Jesus was Jewish. The kids were totally shocked. It made Izzy see how stupid everyone was being, hating and bullying each other because of religion.
In high school nobody really gave her any trouble - well, there was one girl who did - but Izzy ignored her.
Izzy learned and truly believes that anyone who judges you based on your religious beliefs is simply not worth your time. We are all free to believe what what we want.

Same with my fifth grade art teacher. I went to elementary school with kids who wanted everyone to be the same as them. When I noticed them being rude to others for what they liked (including me), I wanted to transfer. I stayed in the school for seven years. I go to a different school now, and people can accept other's identities. Also, a girl who came from Togo, a country that surrounds my home country, Ghana, was bullied for her last name. It was complex. I admit I kind of joined in. When the teacher found out, and threatened to take our graduation trip, I wanted to come clean. The next day, the boy who made jokes about monkeys and unprotected s*x (and I used to laugh at them) told the teacher. I told my teacher. I feel really guilty. My school unfortunately put me in a positive light, and now, I'm glad my school added things and properly funded the school the year I left.

As a Muslim, I felt the same way. I used to get bullied for having "rags" on my head. I used to get bullied for wearing leggings instead of skirts. I can relate to this on so many levels. I'm pagan, and I often get told that I'm crazy, that I'm going to hell, and that I'm a satan worshipper. Like, I don't even believe in satan? Why is that so difficult for people to comprehend sometimes? I apologize for people saying those things to you, but bear in mind that most of them probably have a bias towards christians due to religious trauma, or bad experiences with christians in general. I had a 4th grade Jewish teacher and she was very kind and forgiving. The other one that was the same religion was a pure nightmare. My example proves that religion doesn’t mix with personality and that no one should stereotype someone else as a bad person before they even know who that person is. I’m a Christian believer that is from the Middle East, I am sometimes defined as a muslim or a terrorist just solely based off of where I come from. I'm a Christian and I was ALWAYS bullied by people because of my religion. Even though I've never done anything bad to them. They said I'm a weak Christian who can't do anything for themselves and that I rely on my "imaginary" friend God. When I tried to explain to them they just said, "Oh yeah? So if I asked Jesus to just appear right in front of me he wouldn't appear. So God isn't real." But that's is not how it works. The only ones who don't bully me are my friends from church and my family.

I am an atheist and let me tell you those are not atheist kids you are dealing with. They are anti theists. Atheists respect those that do believe in a god or deity, and never try to force people to stop believing their god and start believing in evolution/science. If it’s not ok to force someone to believe in a god, why is it ok to force someone to NOT believe? It’s not, but unfortunately more anti theists lump themselves with us and agnostics (which are not anti theist either). To me, anti theists are folks who are against religion. I personally dont believe in god, but I do believe there is SOMETHING out there. I dont like the idea of there being absolutely nothing when we die.

I'm a Muslim. When I was in class 3 I wore a scarf/hijab (covers you hair). People would come up to me and ask, Hey why do you wear a scarf? And others would just stare at me. In class 3 I had the BEST teacher ever! She would always give me the star of the day (best person in class but sometimes other ppl had it...) There was another girl and she was a muslim.She didn't wear a scarf/hijab. So then people were asking her why aren't you wearing a scarf? And people asked me, why don't you not wear a scarf because she is. I said, " I'm a Muslim. It's MY choice if I wear a scarf! People have there own faith (and there own rules in their faith!)". The Bible says that perfect love casts out fear. Fear and love are opposite. Trying to pull love out of people with fear makes no sense. There is a reason to fear hell because we have broken God's law but the whole point is that Jesus made a way so that we could be rescued and he wants to show his kindness to us but we have to let go of the sins that drag us down and be willing to join his rehabilitation program. We understand that this is a fallen world and we do self-destructive things. God treats us like his precious patients and he is our doctor. He understands that we do wrong things and he also understands why we do what we do and wants to heal and counsel us. It's just a matter of letting him.

I honestly don't care much about other peoples religion. We all have out own beliefs. I have a friend who is an atheist and I don't really care. Though I taught him a few things about what I currently knew. Not forcing him to join me, but informing what some parts of Christianity mean. And my school is a multi religion school. It's hard to see for a few, but you can see a hand full a Jews, Muslims, Catholics, and etc religions. And I'm friends with some of them. I don't say that they are terrorist or that they killed gods son. I decide to be more open minded and accept their religion. Even the ones that don't have one.

I'm Christian and I love Muslims..I don't call them terrorists.. They are a loving human and same like us. In the Philippines there are many Muslims (not terrorists) that are treated like garbage. I have a Muslim kid in my class and my theacher nicknamed him 'Terrorist' and every one laughed.i felt bad for him and my classmates were shocked that I befriended a Muslim. They were just like "Why did you friend him?" "He's a terrorist unfriend him!' and we are still friends to this day but sadly he moved to another school and told me he has been treated the same way like garbage..

I’m Jewish and I heard quite a few remarks from my classmates when I was younger, I would be bullied for talking about Jewish holidays I would soon celebrate or wearing the Star of David instead of a cross, it’s a pretty horrible experience and I wish nobody has to go through that

This is so relatable. I'm atheist and I was bullied on my first school when I, sadly, has only 6-7. I'm on a new school but I still hear other people talk about me being atheist and that "I'm wrong" and "She's so stupid, being atheist means you're mean and disrespect" But at the end of the day I don't give a shit cause it's better then having shoes thrown at your face (I've tried that, just... it Hurts) EDIT: I removed it someone didn't read the first part.
