there are whole communities of women like that in small southern communities. just absolutely awful gossips that are insufferable. half the reason I ran screaming from the south after ending up down there for college, I'm a new England kind of person. we support being a dick straight to people's faces, none of this backhanded nonsense my entire medical office stopped talking to me about anything not work related when I said I didn't plan to join the church they all went to, as I was raised Jewish. this then happened at 2 more jobs until I moved back north. also happened to several other people I know for various reasons. so I'm not just saying that

Both parents are/were from small southern towns, and my maternal grandma was an infamous gossiper. Whenever my dad would tell her that gossip is a sin (old southern ladies lives revolve around church and family, so you'd think this line would have stopped it then and there, but no), she'd always respond, "It's not gossip if I tell them 'this goes no further than us'." She had a heart of gold, but still had to know everyone's business 🙄. I know this can't be chalked up to a generational thing, as my paternal grandma wasn't known for this, and she was almost 20 years older than maternal grandma, and from an even smaller town, too. OP has my sympathy

What happens happens, there's not really much point in getting earth shatteringly depressed over something that can't be changed. Mourn the loss of something that you thought was part of you, but don't let it stop you from moving on and finding another way to achieve what you want. I hope all the best for both OP and her husband, and that they have many happy memories to share with the child/children they get to raise.
