PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU ARE PLANNING AN OUTDOOR TRIP - IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE. While I am not an expert in outdoor survival, I have picked up a few life-saving tips here and there which I'm so glad I am aware of in case I ever end up in a situation like this. Here are a few things I recommend EVERY hiker carries wherever they go, even if it's a small trip that they think might only take an hour. The contents vary depending on where you are going but these are the basics everyone should have in their outdoor SURVIVAL KIT. (REMEMBER: the more uses a single item can have, the better!) Shelter & Fire: * Foil blanket (for keeping in heat or reflecting heat away) * Cordage - I recommend Paracord (for creating a shelter and for other tasks. You can get some paracord with tinder, snare wire inside which has multiple usages) * Bandana (a bandana can be useful to cover a wound, combine with sticks to make a splint and soaked in water can prevent heat stroke) * Kindling and a fire starter - Flint, Fire Steel, Stormproof matches, Lighter (always have at least 2 ways to make fire) - make sure kindling is kept in a waterproof container. (If you are going to be in a place with no wood for a fire, take a portable gas-powered camping stove with you) Food & Water: * Aluminium canteen of water (aluminum is better than plastic as it can be used to boil contaminated water or melt snow over a fire to create clean drinking water) * High-calorie energy bars (these will keep you going for a few days, hopefully until you can be rescued.) * A fishing kit and snare wire (for when you may be trapped for long periods without food. It is also important to know which local wild plants/seeds/berries/fungus are edible and which are poisonous.) * Water purification tablets * Salt tablets * A condom (lol I know, laugh all you want but a condom can be an excellent way to carry water) First Aid Kit: * Tourniquet (Essential for stopping major blood loss. This could be an instant lifesaver) * Gauze and other wound packing material. * Boo-Boo kit (band-aids, antiseptic, basic drugs like ibuprofen, aspirin, and penicillin) * Nitrile gloves (to keep hands clean when dealing with wounds) * Saline wash (to clean wounds and to wash debris from eyes) * Glucose gel (to keep blood sugar stable) * Sunscreen and chapstick (burts bees can be useful to seal a wound and start a fire) * Any personal medications your group may require. * Bandana (can be made into a sling or combined with sticks to make a basic splint for broken bones) * Ducktape and small sewing kit. (can be useful for fixing equipment and for first aid) Navigation and Signalling: * A compass and map of the local area (contained within a waterproof bag) - LEARN HOW TO USE A MAP! *Standalone GPS unit and long-range radio (if you can afford them) * A decent torch and extra batteries, chem lights(aka powerful glowsticks), and an emergency signal flare. * If you are going to bring your phone, bring a solar charger and extra battery pack. * A loud whistle (whistles travel further than the human voice. 3 blows is the universal signal for help) * Torch ( Universal SOS signal is 3 short flashes, 3 long and then 3 short again) Tools: * A sharp knife and a small multitool. * A hatchet and saw for processing firewood. It is always best to build your own kit rather than buying a pre-built one from Walmart. For one, you can customize it to your own needs and environment. You will also know exactly what you have in your kit. Research how to use everything in your kit - an item is useless to you unless you know how it works. Some of these items above may seem like overkill but if you do end up needing something on this list you'll be wishing you'd have bought it with you. Obviously, it depends where you are traveling, what the climate is like, what supplies you are bringing with you already and how many people are in your party. You can probably carry all this with you in a small backpack. It's worth the extra little bit of weight for the life-saving properties of the kit you are carrying. REMEMBER THE SURVIVAL RULE OF 3. This should be the order of priority. You can survive a maximum of: 3 minutes without breathable air. 3 hours without shelter in extreme conditions. 3 days without water. 3 weeks without food. But mostly remember the prevention of a bad situation is always the best. Hopefully, you'll never end up needing to use these items in the first place. Follow these basic rules to stop an incident occurring: * Watch some youtube videos about basic survival and first aid skills before going on your adventure. Planning is key. *Before you set out TELL at least one person where you are going and what time you expect to be back. Tell them if you aren't back by then or haven't contacted them with an updated plan, they are to call for help. * Stick to man-made trails where possible. * If you get lost off-trail try and get back to a trail using your GPS or map and compass. * If you can't find the trail and are very lost STAY WHERE YOU ARE rather than moving. That way rescue services will be able to find you easier than having to track a moving target. Only do this if you are in a safe place (e.g not near a cliff face or near a bear habitat). * If you find yourself in an open area or clearly visible from the sky, use branches or whatever you can get your hands on to spell out letters at least 6 ft high "HELP". If you are moving, also make an arrow pointing in the direction you plan on traveling. Repeat this more than once if you keep moving. If you are not in an open area and are moving, mark the way you are heading (e.g use a knife to mark an X on a tree or leave an arrow on the ground) This is so any rescuers that are searching for you can follow the route you are taking. * If you have to keep moving, follow a water source - it'll normally lead you down and to civilization. If you feel confident in using a map and compass then use these to find your way to the nearest town. * If possible, DO NOT split up if you are in a group. * Life is more valuable than technology. * If the sun is beginning to fall, TAKE SHELTER before it gets too dark to see what you are doing. * Follow your gut instinct. If something feels wrong, it probably is. I am glad you're alive, but I hope you and people watching realize your situation could've been so much worse. Imagine if you'd had no signal? Or if you'd sustained a serious injury? Or if night would have come and you'd have been exposed to low temperatures? I hope everyone who watches this takes what happened to you and learns from the mistakes you made. Teenagers especially are so reliant on technology when it fails what are you left with? Your brain. Fill your brain with the knowledge that could save your life before you consider going on a trip like this. ALWAYS make sure you research how to survive in the wild, even if you are going exploring in your own back yard. Things can go from fine to life-threatening in a split second. Nature is unpredictable and should always be respected. Even the most experienced explorer can get into deep trouble. Stay safe out there!

I live in the area and they just recovered a hikers REMAINS from Joshua Tree State Park. The family looked devastated on when news when they were interviewed. People DIE every year hiking in Joshua Tree because they were ill prepared. ITS DANGEROUS TO GO CAMPING AND NOT BE PROPERLY PREPARED OR EXPERIENCED!!!!!! You and your friends where VERY VERY LUCKY!!!!! YOU WERE ESPECIALLY LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!! Most people don’t get as lucky as you and get a super fun story time to monetize on KZbin. Most end up like that hiker and his devastated family.

i actually do have a time i almost died and it was when i was 3 years old. so i lived in a apartment and we were in the second floor. we had guest over so my parents were busy and i wanted to take off my shoe (YES THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE OF A SHOEEEE) so in the living room we had a big window and there was a couch there. i ask my older brother (he was 4 years old) to help me take off my shoe. i decided to hold on in the open window. while he was trying to take it off i was pulling myself so hard so he would be able to take it off and when it came off i flew out the window. my parents scream and they go out of the apartment where i was. i landed on grass and i didn’t have a single scratch on me.... kinda weird but yeah that’s the story :)

when i was 4 i was swinging on the stair railing upside down waiting for my mom to finish talking she told me not to do it but i wasn't going to listen to her she's only my mother. Anyway i fell and got a concussion and while i was in the hospital i actually died for like 10 seconds and the doctor used the shocky thing to bring me back soo...ya that happened.(i know this sounds like a lie but it's not.)
