That is so true! I've always avoided wearing lighter colored wigs because I don't want the attention. I've worn grey contacts and would get so many compliments, then my coworker would always yell "they're fake" from her desk.

Yeah I like cosplay contacts and have worn them before (in every color, even pink and purple.) but I noticed whenever I wear any beauty enhancements it looks more “realistic” or eye catching on me, making others jealous . I’ve had women call out when I’m wearing lashes, weaves, and everything else under the sun. It’s always been a woman, and I noticed a pattern where it always has happened when others have complimented whatever the beauty enhancement is .

This is very interesting and true! My ex who was European used to always say to me that my race changes depending on how I wear my hair/hairstyle. If I wore my hair curly 3b/3c I looked more black/mixed but with straight hair or hair slicked back, I looked more ambiguous and could pass for other ethnicities like Indian, arab or latin ect. If my afro is out, I usually get stopped or searched. When my afro is in a bun, it tends to be fine. When I wear a wig with straighter hair texture, they smile and wave at me and welcome me more warmly. I have decided that at the airport when I'm about to go through security, it's time for my bun. My afro can pop once I'm in the new country. I'm an avid traveler.

Even tho I have been mistaken for everything under the sun, I guess I gave off more of the "light skin black girl" look when my hair was relaxed straight but now that my hair is curly and natural, I guess it makes me more "mixed-looking". (I am LS MGM.) I've also observed this in biracial women too. When their hair is straightened, they often look LS black. But as soon as the curls come out, they suddenly "look biracial" 😆

Thanks for sharing your experience with the hair experiment. This was interesting to watch. I’ve never switched up my hair color, or done anything experimental with wigs but I do notice a difference in the way I’m perceived if I straighten my hair vs wear it naturally curly. I get a lot of compliments on my naturally curly hair. People of various backgrounds tend to pedestalize me more with straighter hair or make comments like oh you wore your hair out today even if they’ve seen me everyday with curly hair. Oddly enough, if I don’t wear my hair down or in a ponytail like I wear it in a braid or bun, people assume sometimes my hair isn’t as curly as it is. Your last point on weight is so spot on. I was skinny when I was 18 and 19 and in high school like a size 3 and gained a lot of weight over the last decade. I’m 29 now but recently lost 50 pounds, and while I’m like a size 8 now more people talk to me in Spanish or assume I’m Hispanic, which is half of my background whereas when I was higher in weight that never happened and I was associated more closely to my black side. It will be interesting to see as I continue to lose weight how that goes since my goal is to get back down to a size 2-4.

Oh yeah I hadn't thought about it much but ur right. If I let my hair grow out or color it my hair is a conversation piece. If I shave my head it's a conversation piece. Can't say I've been mistreated for it I am going to get a wig this winter and let my hair grow all the way out. We'll see the response it's going to be interesting bc I love my afro. I have a Pam Grier kinda Chaka Khan phenotype lol so I have been told. They were the beauties of 70's bc of my 4a hair type that's super curly I still don't know my hair type and I've natural since 04. Stay strong beautiful and keep putting out your great content.

Ur welcome sis I'm a little older than you and I think it's great that you have this platform. I didn't have this type of space when I was younger. It was tough being what's considered the pretty girl growing up girls in school were the worst and its still going on with some of these old ass jealous women at work too. I cried when I watched light girls and I cried when I watched dark girls too. I truly believe that black women are the most beautiful women on the planet we have to see the beauty we have in each other and stop tearing each other down. We have to do better

I most definitely get treated differently based on my hair. I receive the same princess treatment when I wear a blonde wig. My nose 👃🏽 clearly tells the world I’m not mixed but people still ask. You can send that blonde wig my way if you’re not gonna wear it 🤭🤭🤭🤭 I love the attention 😂

@divinecreation1217 0 seconds ago Black American with recent admixture I have a mix of 3c 4a and 4b hair. I get attention with my natural hair and even wigs that are 4a and 4b. I feel like I pull men and get compliments with all styles ; including braids. With my natural hair people say i look Caribbean mixed (trini, guyanese, dr, pr) and even Ethiopian. The different styles bring out different features in my phenotypes. Like i feel a 3c wig really makes my more European features stand out. Lol while braids make my indigenous and African features stand out. It’s very fun to see what reactions i get. Hair dye is a thing too but it dried my hair out so bad i had to cut it. I’ll never touch it on my natural hair again

This is an interesting topic because I think about it quite often. I’ve never worn wigs, but have colored my hair and will not color it again so I’ve been thinking about trying wigs, lace fronts etc out. But the other day, my hair is curly and black and I usually just have it in a bun but had it down, I went to the store and the store clerk wasn’t paying attention to me, then a few min later I noticed him staring. Once I walked up to check out he had this nice look on his face, like very soft. I then asked about a franchise chicken place not too far. He said it was really good, and this man says, “there’s this place called Chic Fil A that’s really good too” when he said that I already knew the next question. He then asked me where I was from, I said, with no accent, here. He looked at me puzzled. Then said something about where he was from. I asked where he was from and he said Egypt. I said oh, then where did you think I was from? Ethiopia. He said, you look Ethiopian. I do have “slimmer” facial features, but I know the curls really made him believe that. I’ve actually had Ethiopian, and Mexican people walk up to me speaking their language and Mexican women when they think you are Mexican and don’t know Spanish they go off on you! Mexican girls around my age will either covet or compliment my curly hair. I’ve noticed when my hair is straight some people think I’m Mexican and I do have a golden skin tone, not pale, and I understand there are different tones in that community as well but it throws me off. Now for the South American (Latin countries) these people look slightly black but you can tell they have heavy Spanish origins. Especially if my hair is curly or in a bun, they will study me and give me that “are you from where I’m from look” like slowly walking by staring deep into my eyes to get a reaction. Latin men and women do that. When people think you’re them or from the same country they have a softer disposition, maybe bc it reminds them of home, idk. When my hair is straight, again it’s black, I can tell people some white ppl think I’m actually half black/ white. White ppl have always randomly started conversations with me, but it’s different with straight hair. Like they do it way more. I’m not sure if it’s because the curls seem more ethnic vs the straight hair or if they think I’m actually half white. I’ve been asked if I was “European” multiple times. Like, what does that even mean? Europe is a continent, and I sound like I’m from California. I have more stories but I think that covers it for now. I think it is so timely you made this video because the Ethiopian situation happened about two days ago and since then I’ve been thinking about how I wear my hair differently and get slightly different reactions.

“When people think you’re them they have a softer disposition” omg this is SO true and why so many unambiguous women give me dirty looks. Because you can tell I’m black but you can also tell I’m mixed lol. So I’m far away enough in proximity for some people in the black community to be unwelcoming . Omg I need to upload my other storytime because my experience with BLACK WOMEN is that I am either hated or heavily pedestalized when I didn’t ask for it . Like for example I have a habit of taking of my wigs and extensions in public . My hair underneath is my regular curly hair in a braid or bun. People stare and they’re looking kind of surprised like did she really take off her wig ? But then when they see my natural hair they “see why I can get away with it.” It’s as if my hair is “good” in their eyes or whatever .

When I have long curly hair, I did get compliments but not much, just that people liked my thick curly hair that's also long. It might be because it fits me very well, it's what I grew up with. However one time I had my hair straighten for a job interview, I was also dressed in a suit with nice shoes and I got so much attention from men that day, men of any race from the street and on the bus just coming up to me and complimenting me. I don't straighten my hair often since I like my curls and want to keep my hair healthy, but I know I can get more attention from straighten hair. It was very interesting hearing your different experiences especially with hair color. I personally always wanted to do a black to honey blonde or warm blonde color for my curly hair. I always like the dark to honey blonde or warm blonde and curly hair look. I wonder what kind of attention I may receive. Since I already got attention from black and straighten hair, I believe ashy blonde curls will push me into ambiguity more. I plan to do this with hair wax to see if it looks good on my curls, I heard hair wax can be washed off. I wash my hair on weekends or day off so I'll wear it for a week as an experiment and then wash it off in the weekend.

I loved your storytime! I have naturally curly hair too but my hair color is a dark chestnut brown but when you look at my hair as a whole it looks black and when I straighten it it’s all the way down my back hitting my tailbone and yes I get stared at alot by black and white women but it’s never a look of hate they are always just mesmerized by my hair. I’ve been told that my hair is more of an European texture which makes me look more ambiguous especially when I straighten it but a lot of people will always come up to me and say how beautiful my hair is and would ask me what I did to grow it and my answer is alway “nothing” lol all I do is take care of it and it just grows so I don’t have any specific things I do to grow my hair and it grows pretty fast too.

I have long type 3 hair and back in 2019 I decided to get a sew-in. The hair was less curly and more of a beach-wave texture. I was guilted for experimenting by other black women who wore weaves themselves. People just don't understand the logic of "because I want to." Lol. It's just that surface level.

Ok so this video really relates to me! Literally I can change my hair and makeup style and I began to look like something else. Friends and family always joke that I could be a spy. But seriously if my hair is dark or black and long (curly or straight) most ppl assume I’m Latina (Dominican, Puerto Rican) of my hair is light colored blonde and long (curly or straight) ppl assume I am half black and half white. I even have white people argue with me about being biracial when I’m not. They compare me to family members that are biracial and say I look like them so I HAVE to be biracial. Also, the freckles thing is real, they really think that means I’m mixed too. Not all ppl but majority in my experience has been like that. I’ve also gotten Arab of I have a head wrap on and heavier makeup or I’ve gotten southeast Asian Indian if I am super tan and my hair is black and long especially if I have my nose stud in. So it’s very interesting that unbeknownst to me changing my look would get these responses. I generally just get bored easily and change my look a lot. I hate looking the same for too long.

Watching this video made me realise I shouldn’t feel bad when I change up my hair (when it came to wigs) I’m 100% Nigerian brown skinned but have that kind of look where depending on my hairstyle I can pass for a lot different ethnic backgrounds - I felt like I was betraying my blackness when people would automatically think I’m mixed but that’s not even my fault 🤣 and I shouldn’t feel bad that I’m deemed desirable however the uncomfortability of knowing I was being sought after bc men thought I was something I was not made me just focus on loving on my natural type 4 hair instead I attract better quality people in my natural state
