I live in Ontario and had student loans like crazy. I was 40 grand in debt and wanted to get rid of it ASAP, so I ended up living out my my car while working full time. It was greasy and embarrassing, but I paid it off in 2 years.

So true about pay day loans, I used one once and when I called to pay it back they sounded annoyed & told me a few times that I didn't need to pay it all on that day. I was like nope take your money and I've never had to go back to that. Thank God!

STAY AWAY FORM PAY DAY LOANS! I used to work at Cash Converters and TRUST ME, maybe 5% of people pay them off in time. All that happens is that customers need a new payday loan to cover the cost of their existing loans, and it just perpetuates. It's horrible, and only ends badly. Please take our advise, and DON'T DO IT!

This is a fabulous video. People see the luxury videos, and too many don't realize that the person filming it didn't start out being able to afford the luxury items (unless perhaps their parents made it possible, but that isn't helping them understand the value of money). Seeing someone who made a lot of the typical unwise decisions, but took responsibility for them and worked her way out of debt is inspiring on so many levels. Kudos for being vulnerable (like you have in other videos) and hopefully helping others to work towards being as debt free as possibly. You are an inspiration. Keep up the great work!

The worst decision I ever made was buying a car from "YES car credit". I ended up paying 12K for a 4 K car! I'm still unsure about cars...buy a used one outright or a brand new using hire purchase schemes?

Lifeplasty just buy a good used one. You always want a reliable car, every time I have a car and it’s near getting paid off I trade it in for a new one. Where I live not having a car is very hard to get around.

Buy a used one! If you buy a brand new one, the car loses half of it’s worth the second after you drive off and there are really good deals on used ones! Good luck xX
@jadiecakes3241

It really depends on you, what you want and your finance. When buying any car its important to read car reviews on the make and model (some are way better quality than others and some have known issues specific to certain years etc). I've had a used and brand new car and both were good for what i wanted. I bought a brand new car because i wanted one and it was what i wanted and i put about 3 months of research into it. I also was lucky enough to pay cash for my car (my parents lent me half which im paying off interest free). Depending on your bank, personal loans ive found generally have a lower interest rate than car finance but its all about negotiating and finding the best deal or just saving and paying cash. Also when buying any car remember to budget in insurance, registration and stamp duty if applicable. otherwise you get slammed with costs you wer'nt anticipating. If you do your research and intend on having the car a long time the value lost when driving a new car out of the dealership is kind of negligible (remember to check out the second hand market if you go brand new so you can see what your potential for re-sale is!). I traded in my used car for almost as much i paid for it and saved myself $4k on my new car. Also when buying used GET IT CHECKED BY A MECHANIC or go through a reliable dealer with a warranty. Road worthies mean nothing when you can get them from dodgy people and you dont want to end up with a lemon.

Great content on a very important subject. When I started college I just happen to get a entry level part-time job in the credit area of a local department store (guess this would be considered a high street store). I told myself the same thing, no credit cards. Until I learned that they charge me foreign fees for using my bank card for overseas purchases. So I got a credit card with my bank to use during our European vacation to avoid those fees. Paid it off in 3 months to avoid the interest since i get no interest for 3 months from first use. Next time I think I'll get one with better perks like collecting points so they can be used for airfare. I think credit cards are only ok to use if you know you have the money to pay it off right away. Helps build credit score which helps in the long run when you are ready to buy a home or car.

Not sure if you're in he UK or the US but in the US it's actually not good if you have a line of credit open that's stagnant. It shows no record of you spending and reliably paying so it really is no help to have a credit card and not use it.

I had a good paying job my first year that allowed me to really pay aggressively and since moving on to a part time job I now have budgeted monthly what I need to pay on loans and living expenses, and what I can afford for fun, I haven't been able to save much but i'm surviving and have a plan for paying my loans asap! People need to talk about debt more! And it's really great to see someone like you who is doing so well now, tell us that you went through this too.

I was never in debt but had very bad spending habits. Personally what helped me was not using credit and always paying with cash so I could physically see the money I was spending. This meant also giving my credit card to my parents to keep and I only used it once a month to keep my credit score moving. Also keeping a journal helps. The best advice I had for myself is to ask someone to watch after my spending and remind me of what my goals are. It’s always easier with someone telling/guiding you what to do.

I fail to understand the Western concept of not living with your family after uni. You literally live with your family until you get married where I'm from. I get those societies are very individualistic and all but it makes no sense make a fresh graduate, who like Sophie said will neither have work experience, nor the opportunity to immediately get a well paying job. Why don't people live with their families until they're at least 25, paid off majority of their debts and actually saved some money for living independently? And literally why is living with one's own family frowned upon, it is so weird to me lol .
@StylosityYourWay

Ayesha Irfan were ultra individuals is the best I can desscribe it. For a lot of western people (especially of the north American variety) your family is done taking care of you. They won't have you back. I had a friend in high school who had to pay rent to his dad because he had turned 18 before he graduated from high school. He left for the military as soon as school was done.
@patronusstag
@patronusstag 6 жыл бұрын
hmm I kinda gathered that from watching and reading stuff online. the "your family is done taking care of you" is such a weird concept to people from collectivist societies like me though lol. it's one thing to be super independent and individualistic but i don't see the point when it makes little financial sense.
@StylosityYourWay
@StylosityYourWay 6 жыл бұрын
Ayesha Irfan I totally understand what you mean. It doesn't make sense financially for us to all pay for our own places and the expense of keeping those places up. Especially when you factor in how much debt is swirling around. I was staying with friends in India becuse one of them was getting married in December. It made me think about this very concept. When you have a family that loves and supports each other it makes sense to stay together and build your wealth not spiral into debt. Which I might ad felt like just as foriegn of a concept from my perspective. This is a little morbid but when our older relatives die we just end up throwing all their stuff away and cleaning out their houses. It's so much wasted money and energy on dealing with so many houses/furniture/upkeep.

Europe is different. Family matters more. The uk and usa have big issues with family ties now thus care homes thrive. I guess kids are angry at being pushed out and dont want to look after parents later on. In the 1900s people stayed with family until marriage ! No care homes unless you were very disabled or needed help. Even then extended families were norm. Things are changing though as rent is soooo high

Hi ilham, As somebody who was in your position not that long ago, I'd recommend 100% looking at volunteering for charities. I'm not sure what industry you want to go into but I work in the media industry and the only way I have achieved what I have so quickly is because I volunteered at Marie Curie as the PR and Media Intern for two years. You don't get paid but, charities only ask for 1-2 days a week and are very flexible so it is a very good use of your time. I'd look at volunteerteam.london.gov.uk if you're interested. I'd also start looking for and lining up job interviews in August, look for something hassle free and part-time, like a bar job. You would be amazed at how many bar/restaurant/host jobs there are available. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask, I'd be happy to help. Good luck! :)

Thank you for saying that women don’t ask for the raises they deserve and many employers know that and take advantage of that. Years ago, a lady I worked with told me that I was short changing myself by not speaking up. I took her advice and in a matter of two years, my salary more than doubled. Had I not relocated, my salary would have kept increasing at a great rate. By the way, it was another woman that acknowledged the value of my work (after I brought it to her attention). It seemed almost crazy that I just kept getting large raises, but the two of us were basically running a very profitable company.

Sophie everything you have said here is true. I remember watching your first debt video and I have taken that to heart. My biggest struggles are still my student loans. It's a crying shame how her in the USA how many students are in debt.

This is definitely a real issue and one I am facing. I do not overspend and have been budgeting, but my degree has been very full on and in my third year I had to quit my job, so that I had enough time to complete assignments. This meant I had no income coming in and so, inevitably, was going into debt with the basics and especially textbooks!!! I was just about cutting it in the first couple of years, but now I am facing debt before I even get started. My student loan is practically non-existent and I have no idea why; I do not live at home. I saved up around 3,000 pounds before coming to university and still seemed to go through that by second year; yes clubbing and societies were very, very expensive. Also, I spent quite a bit of that on bedding and essentials such as crockery, etc. It has been a shame but due to this I have really felt forced to abandon any social activities; I simply cannot afford it!!! This has been somewhat devastating as I feel like I have not gotten the most out of my university experience, yet I know many others facing worse situations than me, being thousands and thousands in debt. So, it could be worse I guess. I think it is important to let other students know they're not alone and it does not have to be because of recklessness either. Many face these issues and it is important to talk about!!!!

That was the funniest video on such a deep subject as debt! We've all been there at some point & you gave great tips for those that are in debt, especially students whom seem to be the most innocent targets! 👍😘

I think people need to hear more about financing their future and spend their money to get what they want responsibly. I know I’m getting on a snowball of finally doing better after watching tons of videos like this. Thank you for this! I stumbled upon your channel because of your story of life struggle videos. It motivates me to get where I want to be if I keep persisting the dream.

Thank you so much for this lovely. I am in £4.5K in debt, and it makes me feel sick thinking about it - especially as its going no-where soon. The only bonus I have found is the 0% interest deals. Banks are rediculous for offering someone who makes £12K a year the same amount on a credit card, but it means I can move money about and actually pay off the debt slowly with the minimum payments rather than just paying interest! This was so good, thankyou!

Hi Sophie, thanks for sharing. When I started uni Barclay card were giving away cameras so I signed up for one. As soon as it arrived my Mum cut the card in half and told me about the evils of credit cards lol. I'm so glad she did although I didn't appreciate it at the time x
