That sounds nuts, sorry you had to go through that! I moved from the UK to Germany in 2019 and my first job was in a small hotel. The manager kept making excuses as to where my contract was, she had a right go at me for a mistake she actually made but didn't argue with any of the other staff and when I defended myself she basically told me I can leave if I want. I didn't walk out then and there, I continued with my shift because I needed the money and a job, but I wish I'd just left then, because at the end of my shift I asked AGAIN for the contract that she'd been putting off giving me for about 4 weeks, and she sent it via email to me when I got home but half an hour later she sent another email saying she's getting rid of me with no reason. It was a week before Christmas as well. 🙃 She hired a lot of foreign staff, mostly from Asia, so I think she probably treated all her staff like crap but because I stood up for myself and knew my worth, she didn't like it. Oh and during the whole fiasco she also changed my job from a receptionist to working in housekeeping and breakfast service and halved my wages and hours. 👀

The grand solution was just to pay them off literally thousands of dollars to stop ruining my life. 😩😩😭😠 It's been years now but whenever I think back on it I still get so angry!! And I know plenty of friends with similar stories. It just makes me angry to think that these things are STILL happening to foreign workers, and I don't blame you at all for still having a bad taste in your mouth. And I agree so much with what you said about employers trying to turn it around on foreign workers and blame it on them for not understanding the "culture" or being good employees, when their own Korean staff members are quitting left and right! WHYYYY. I'm glad it seems like the other teachers had your back and knew what was up though haha. You are beautifully eloquent! You students are lucky to have you, wherever you now are.😊 I'm South African, a bit (😅) older, and have been teaching in "non-western" countries for 20+ years. In EVERY country I have experienced the best and worst the countries have to offer. In Saudi Arabia, I worked at a university, and my Dean gave me free reign because I had started a number of extra-curricular activities that were previously non-existent: a school newspaper, a debating club, public speaking contests, and even sessions during which colleagues could share past/current research activities. Admittedly, I was popular, which irked a local professor. He clearly hated me but kept his attitude in check because he had no power over me. Then my Dean died, and the professor who hated me became my new Dean. It was downhill from there. He had a number of disciplinary hearingsagainst me, based on trumped up charges, and I won each one, which irked him even more. Eventually, I resigned and applied for a position at another university, but they required a release letter from my Dean. When I requested it, my Dean said that he would send it directly to the new university, despite my protests. What he did, in fact, do was bad-mouth me to the new university and they retracted their offer. I decided to leave the country at the end of the semester. When I wanted to leave, the finance department refused to release my long-service cheque because each department had to sign that I was done with them, and the housing department refused to sign because I had rented a private apartment. They had confiscated my passport and I was stuck in the country for 2 weeks after the semester had ended. I honestly thought that I would die or be killed in that country. A day before my visa expired, the housing department suddenly signed my release form and I was paid what was due to me. I had less than 24 hours to leave the country. I sat and sobbed on the plane back to South Africa. Having said that, I had met the mist amazing, kind-hearted people during my time there, and my students adored me. More than 10 years on, many are still in touch. I had similar positive/negative experiences in The UAE and China. I am still in China and have a wonderful position with very accommodating bosses, but walked through fire to get here.

@@deeyandra Just a bit of advice: Don't go for small, independent companies. Go for larger, recognised companies that have a proven track record. I work for a government university at a relatively low wage but I only teach 8 hours a week. The rest of my time is spent on corporate training. I do it through the college, but I set my rate and get paid handsomely for it, and the college gets the "outreach programme recognition" from the government. It's a win-win situation. If your sister can't get you set up, and you have the correct qualifications, I have just got my nephew into a great international junior school in Guangzhou. Excellent salary and his first month there has been great.

And if they fire you before the period you want, they have to pay you one month's salary as well. In summary, most of the clauses in the contract are 'threats' that the Korean government does not recognize. If you had given Koreans such a ridiculous contract, they would have protested or agreed to understand and then ignored it (since it has absolutely no legal force). In the early 90s late 80s they use to pay people as much as doctors a lot of Australians and New Zealand used to buy a house every three months now I really don’t understand why people teach English here because as soon as you start you plateau, there is a glass ceiling or like a concrete ceiling you will never get ahead. You’ll never get a raise, my advice go home get a different degree because your experience here will never get you a job at home and the life in Japan or Korea isn’t that good but because of the image people think it’s great you also don’t have any of the protections you would expect these countries are paid for local people by the time you figured out you’re not getting ahead it’s almost too late to move or change
@CHASE888885 ай бұрын
Honestly, if you think about it, they wouldn’t have paid you much more even if they did pay you more English teaching is more about personality no matter how good you are. It’s all about how the students like you that’s way more important than your skills. It’s really about entertaining the students, but making it look like you’re teaching. When I first started the better looking you were and the more the students giggled. The better teacher you were it didn’t matter where you graduated to a certain degree. It’s still like that.
@deeyandra5 ай бұрын
@CHASE88888 I started to realise this, unfortunately :( Perhaps that's why a lot of people who don't really enjoy teaching stay in it because it's so much effort to try something different. Would you believe that a white teacher in my school confided in the other white teacher that she intends to renew her contract because she can't guarantee her white privilege will be as effective at another school? I have reason to believe that you're having a good time at a hagwon in SK, either you're married to the owner, your white privilege is protecting you, or you're a lucky, rare exception and your school actually believes foreigners deserve rights...💀

Honestly, teaching English in some of the Asian countries doesn't require any degree. Some of those schools are fine if you are white or from an English speaking country. They even discriminate against people of their own colour because they think these people can't speak English.
@deeyandra2 жыл бұрын
I can attest to this 😔 Without a specific teaching degree or a TEFL, you can just show up and teach at most cram schools. Unfortunately, this has led to dis-passionate, wishy-washy teachers that don't do the rest of us teachers any favours :/

What does it really mean to " Sponsor you". I mean looking at it from their point of view. What process did they have to go through to find you, recruit you and facilitate your visa. Could their actions be a reflection of the "wasted" resources they feel they may have spent on you?
@deeyandra3 жыл бұрын
Money was not an issue. In my contract, it said that I had to pay for the recruitment fee, which came out of my last two paychecks (which apparently, I shouldn't have been asked to pay.) They knew that without those documents/ their permission, I would have no choice but to leave the country because their names were on my visa. That's a malicious abuse of power...

In Japan, you own your own visa unlike in Korea. If you're young and want to teach in Asia, go to Taiwan. I work at a university in Korea, so not easy to leave. I prefer Taiwan. If I had a comparable offer in Taiwan, I would leave.

You don’t tell us why so many teachers quit.
@deeyandra2 жыл бұрын
People leave for different reasons but my Korean co-teachers left because schools will give you more responsibilities than stated in the contract, make you do overtime, call you in on weeekends, make you call the parents every day to do phone counselling, and of course, there's the Korean hierarchy where bosses sometime treat them like sh!t because they're higher ups. For foreign teachers, schools also exploit you and know you can't do anything about it because you're tied to a visa. That's why some foreigners will do what's called a 'midnight run' where they leave the country with little to no notice. There is no law that says the school has to give you the documents you need to transfer to another job, and there is no law that protects foreigners from discrimination or exploitation and work, so some just up and leave.

If wolves evolved into domestic dogs and big cats into domestic kittens, I think people can also develop a sense of slavery with in their gene and be good with it. thats why its a welled up country like an inbred city somewhere south in the states. dont give korea the expectation and attention it craves, you give it more and expect more, the less they will do anyway.
