In the 1970's, alligators were kept as pets surprisingly often. This gem of a book from 1973 explains how to "care for" alligators... And the advice is so terrible it's almost funny. We HAD to read through it with you to not only laugh over the inaccuracy of the advice, but also to show just how far we've come in terms of caring for reptiles in captivity! And, of course, Rex (our alligator) helps us out!

I hope this video helps explain why Rex's old owner took care of her the way he did. I'm old enough to have killed a few of my reptiles following the "expert advice" we had back in the day. Books like this one were everywhere and pet shops would recommend them. There was no one else to ask. No meet ups. Libraries had the same exact information. So you got a pet and did everything the book said to care for them, and they still got sick and died. Even the vets had no idea what to do, no one was trained or knew how to care for these animals. It still pains me that a few of my pets died horribly by my hands, and it hurts knowing so many more must have suffered and died throughout the years from this nonsense. But at least we did learn eventually. At least we gain more empathy for animals as the years have gone on. You all are so lucky to have access to good information. I know it seems like something to take for granted, but don't. KZbin is amazing for learning, as is SnakeDiscovery. You dang kids these days and your accurate information and enthusiastic herping community.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I grew up with the internet available (I'm 24), and while it has complicated life in a lot of ways, comments like this make me so thankful to have it. Even when I unexpectedly adopted a kitten (my roommate found him starving and scared on the street, and he stole my heart fast) the internet was such a Godsend. Hell, even experts on DOGS will tell you how much more we have learned about them in the last 10-15 years, and we literally *made* dogs. I can't imagine how bad things were for reptiles. I especially love a comment Emily made in a different video..."you don't rescue an animal from the wild. You TAKE an animal from the wild."

One of my earliest memories is going to the exotic petshop with my parents to buy toys for our parrots (a real treat to me due to the colourful store and the many animals inside) and getting distracted by the aquariums at the adjoining room. I walked inside a very dark room and there was a not-so-small baby cayman in a fish tank. It had no rocks or anything, just a few inches of slimy water, enough to leave its eyes and nostrils out in the air. The tank had the same length with the cayman, leaving the poor thing literally immobile in its glassy prison. It gave me *nightmares* to imagine it spending its entire life like this, just staring into space, and it could even be the root to my claustrophobia to horizontally enclosed spaces now that I think of it. Needless to say that my mum found me, bundled my shaking self away, telling them they were assholes, or something more appropriate to a small child's ears. We never went back. That was in the late 90's (yes, Rex is older than me too) and that poor fellow was obviously destined as a pet. Tragic. At least we've come a long way.

I remember the same thing back in the 90s. What amazes me is people still wanting them as pets. A local exotic pet store has a baby as a display animal and people post all the time asking if they will carry any to sell. Which they said they wont. I guess people do not realize how big they get.

And if You are not motivated enough then it is better to hear it's a very bad idea and simply not have one. So I would tell the same to anyone.

R y a n yeah, but knowing alligator facts and not knowing some doesn’t make them bad people to hire. Sure, they should know something about alligators, but if they don’t get a perfect score, it doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t make a good employee. If they are willing to learn about alligators, I’d say that’s a good sign that the person probably would also want to learn more about caring for reptiles and such. I agree that tests may be a good way to separate good form bad but this method I think has some major flaws

@Whydidntyousayhiback 4 жыл бұрын
R y a n yes, I understand, but Emily also said that there was other bits of information that they didn’t share, the just shared the comically incorrect ones. Plus, snakes are a lot more common as pets and there’s not only information about them designed to educate owners, there’s also other bits and pieces in textbooks. Alligators a bit more rare I’d say. I’d think it’d me mostly about habitat (in the wild), ancestry and other things that don’t really specialize in trying to educate owners. This pamphlet tried and failed horrendously, but it was designed in a way to attempt to prepare people in taking on an alligator as a pet. Also, just because they don’t know something about alligators doesn’t mean they won’t be good educators. I’d believe Emily and Ed would go further in training and deciding right then and there would be too early. Sure they should get a good score but not perfect, and alligators probably have some unique behavior than other reptiles. But you do have a point, the information is so bad in the book, that anyone qualified should have at least some idea that this is wrong.

Yesterday was Science Night for my school. I'm new around the area, so I asked if there would be snakes, and they said "...usually." So I was super excited, naturally. When I got there, I asked this lady where the reptiles were and she said there were none! So I wandered around a bit and walked into the cafeteria where they were keeping the animals. They let me hold a tarantula, but I was still disappointed. After petting a chicken, I turned around and literally screeched, "BEARDED DRAGON!!!!" They let me hold him and he was huge! His belly was so soft... but sadly there were no snakes.

When he'd finally snagged the frantic snake, Steve Irwin had the unmitigated gall to turn grinning to the camera and proclaim, "Aggressive, isn't he?" Astrin Ymris Wasn’t the purpose of that to catch the wild snake? He was filming a program where he showed animals and educated people about them, and that sometimes required him to keep them in one place. He was filming a show, and he let it go after they got the footage. He could be a bit too personal with some of the animals he was around (especially wild ones), but he never hurt them, and he was far from abusive. His zoo, then and now, contains absolutely beautiful enclosures, and he was world renowned for his conservation and rehabilitation programs. It’s not like he hurt a snake by keeping it from running away, he filmed it getting testy and then let it go. The risks he took put him at danger at times, but he was great to the animals he was around.

Same! But I'd only take one if it was disorder or deformed or something and couldn't safely live in the wild. I want to take care of animals like that, plus have plenty of pets just for cuddling! I really want a snake but it's been hard enough convincing my parents to let me get another cat.

My great grandad used to work at the docks in Liverpool back in the 1950s and ended up with a ton of crazy exotic pets that people had shipped and never picked up, one of which being an American alligator, he kept it in a shed in his garden with a bathtub of water which, while not great husbandry by any standards, was far better than what it was used to at the holding area in the docks, living in a tiny cage and being fed other animals who hadn’t survived their shipping. It’s nice to see how far we’ve come in a relatively short space of time in our understanding and care of animals, keep up the good work!

The zoo near me in England does house alligators and turtles together, but they do make sure that the turtles are large enough so that the fully grown alligators can't/won't eat them, and when/if the turtles do mate they remove the eggs immediately, same with the alligator eggs, to ensure maximum safety, and because their enclosures we're pretty much the same anyways, they decided that housing together will be better, and they do have a seperate space for babies of both kinds

I love how the book suddenly stops without going into older alligators. My headcanon is that the author’s pet alligator busted out of their fishbowl and went after them for revenge. They’re probably still running from it. Also notice it kept saying he and him? I guess female alligators didn’t exist in the 70s.

Oh god, this episode was brilliant! Yes, please have more story time with Rex! Seriously, when I was a kid in the early 70s, I used to beg my mother to let me go to the pet section in the Newberry's store. Where they did have tanks of baby alligators. They also had red eared sliders, and all sorts of inappropriate animals for pets. I LOVED the baby alligators. Luckily my mother was smart enough to say no to that. "Because they'd get too big." Though I'm sure part of it was that she had no clue how to keep and care for alligators. From the information in the book I imagine that most of them that went home with kids sadly didn't survive for very long. I remember the tanks there. They had regular 20-40 gallon fish tanks just crammed with 10+ animals per tank. I'm sure they were not very healthy living like that. You'll be happy to know that Newberry's pet department was closed down due to animals (not just alligators) being kept in deplorable conditions. Eventually the store closed down entirely and the company went bankrupt.

It's actually a very good guide (It's called "The handbook of the young pet owner" in Italian), that explains how to keep a lot of other pets too (like squirrels, butterflies, and all sorts of birds), but for the reptiles it only talks about turtles, because they say that your parents may not allow you to keep snakes or iguanas😂. It also includes a very good guide in setting up aquariums.
