Stourhead Gardens Tour: Walking in a Living Work of Art

A summertime walking tour of the living work of art that is the National Trust's Stourhead Gardens. You have to pay to walk around the inner landscaped gardens but the rest of the Estate's grounds are free. Plenty of free parking in different spots around Stourton village and dedicated Pay and Display carparks (BA12 6QF). Check the NT website for current prices.
First opened in the 1740s, Henry Hoare's incredible gardens boasts classical temples, Grotto, Bristol Cross, Pantheon, Palladian style bridge and a host of beautiful specimen trees and plants. We could not go into every temple as one was closed and another was hosting a wedding!
We also visit the historical St. Peter's Church and Stourhead's plant nursery and walled gardens.
It was a lush day in the most relaxing and dramatic of places, a real favorite haunt of ours, we are so happy to share it with you.

Lovely intro, Kat talking about "if the garden is open" sounds like Aria and Zaiden when they're talking about "if the candy shop is open" We love a well maintained garden, and you guys are so... civilized, with your tea drinking. We're over here filtering pond water, and maybe dumping an electrolyte power in it if it's been a bit of a sweaty day. The big white flowers looked nice, but we had a hard time smelling them over here. Sure it was lovely though. That bird art was incredible. That's a spot where the GoPro pulling everything so far back works really well. Until you got right up on it, those almost looked like real feathers hanging up there. So nice you guys were able to get inside the spaces this time around. Fantastic statuary, lovely tunnel under the road, and the church was quite well maintained for being 800 something years old. If we didn't already know Kat loves a good garden, the mystery would have been lifted on this installment for sure. 😂 Kid in a candy shop for sure! Ceri trying to keep up, "Yeah, lovely. You see they've got some pears over there!" Gave us a good giggle. Always a pleasure joining you two for a walk, and this one was no exception. See you about!

Good afternoon, JR, Aria, Zaiden and Sarah, kids in a candy shop at Christmas is about right for Kat's excitement levels here, I swear she didn't sleep a wink the night before this visit! 🌸❤ So pleased to share another of our special and favourite places with you guys, this was one of the first places Kat and I ever explored in Wiltshire, we love it. Incredibly well maintained and just eye bulgingly gorgeous vistas at ever turn! The buildings are so well kept, its almost as if it's all under a giant glass closh! Yes the pears was about the extent of my knowledge in the garden, that and the kiwi fruit Kat poked too! A living work of art, indeed! So many interesting and beautiful trees; and the flowers too. The pelargoniums were really special, would love to visit that collection. Nice designs in the Stourhead 75 project. Such interesting variety there, like the grotto, gothic cottage, Bristol cross, and Peters church, which are various forms of human art. The mix with nature is so pleasant. What an amazing place, and enjoyed walking with you, as always!

Wow what a beautiful place! We loved the idea of the living work of art, and it couldn't be more true, the lake is a masterpiece! Wonderful tour guys, so informative as always, Kat we would love to have you on hand on our walks to identify all the flora and fauna for us!😄. Entertaining as always. 😀 I love those fancy gardens that are actually very planned and yet… look very natural. Rhododendrons always remind me of childhood as we lived opposite a park that had loads of them. Jungle adventures for little kids. Also you can’t beat a good folly. And that gothic cottage… 😍 Thanks for the tour - have put it on our list of places to visit. Hazel loves places like this.

What a fantastic looking place. Yes, a healthy, mature ash is a rare thing indeed these days. After a slow start up here, 'ash die-back' is really taking hold now. Ash (along with hawthorn) is my favourite tree and I'd be gutted to see them go the way of the elm. St Peter's was a delight too. It seemed to have a light airy feel inside that many churches lack. I remember that walk and the I loved the gardens this time, real vibrate and colourful but I am always a bit sad when summer starts to go. Some real nice trees there around the lake but man that tree with the white blossom on was absolutely stunning and I wish I could have smelt that too! I thought Santa would have been in the Grotto but it was still nice without him. Loved the stone houses there and gothic cottage, I would really enjoy a cream tea and mulled wine in there. St Peters Church was a real highlight and at 1291 what a bit of history, as well as a stunning example of (imo) a proper old church. What an awesome place to get married, very magical and really impressive, what a place to go for a day out, cheers Alan
