Stovax Huntingdon Review

This is a full independent review of the Stovax Huntingdon, we test the stoves real world performance in:
Clean glass
Fuel economy
Ease of lighting
And controlling
I also give my views and a bit of background information. The videos are designed to be quick with only the key information, but you are welcome to ask questions in the comments.
We are a little independent channel that started doing this purely for a love of the industry. Over time it has become what we do, and we have been fortunate enough to cover our costs and make living. This is achieved through:

I definitely would like to and I did meet the head of Contura UK a few months ago. We chatted about some projects, but I haven’t gone back to him yet because in truth I already have enough projects to take me into 2025 😅. I’ll definitely get there, because there’s no doubt, it’ll be a great thing to look at!

@@TheTortoise That'd be great, I will keep a look out. I'm a new 810 owner and am loving it, but there is a real lack of reviews or hints on how to get the best out of it. Would be really interested to get your insight when you get round to it.

Great video, but I just wondering how good are briquettes compared to logs and coal price wise and heat output.

Money and heat wise the best thing will always be locally sourced wood, cut split and dried by you. But if you’re comparing bought “ready to burn” fuel, then typically: Coal based has the longest burn time. Wood is very clean, looks the nicest whilst burning, with the most flames and produces the least ash. Compressed logs can have their uses, but generally they split into 2 categories: Very high heat and need to be used sparingly. Good for lighting and driving lots of heat into a space quickly. Or Quite slow burning, useful for overnight use, but often produces an awful lot of ash.

I tested the Bembridge Blu which is a C5 with a different door. This stove is focused on being a wonderful back up and focal point where as the C5 has a bit more focus on serious use. For most people they will be used for the same purpose and will perform similarly, but it depends what you want from your stove. I’m a fan of both of them, but it’s a bit like comparing a Mercedes SLK with a Mercedes SUV. The Huntingdon is like the SLK, very focused on look, enjoyment and evening use(weekend use for the car). They’re both high quality, the same thing at their core and similar money, but the C5 is perhaps a bit more workhorse.

A nice stove which we viewed at a dealer last week and the traditional styling impressed. At the end of the review you commented about the stove being more suitable for evening/weekend use rather than on all the time. Given that most stoves are made in a similar manner, body in either steel or cast iron or a mixture of the two and fire resistant liners on the inside what makes the difference? Comparing this stove with two of the most respected competitors on the market at present, the DG Ivar 5 and Heta Ambition 5, I see these two stoves weigh in at 75kg and 98kg respectively, whilst the Huntingdon comes in at 91kg so it is not obviously lightly built so how would its unsuitability show itself, i.e. what would start to wear out before the competition?

Weight is one part of equation but not all of it. It’s also worth mentioning that the Huntingdon weight is added by 2 things not present on the others: It has a grate and ash pan (in the weight you’ve mentioned). And It has an inner steel “engine or body” and then outer cast panels meaning it is a convection stove, so it has 2 layers rather than 1. The character of the stove is also more focused on getting the look right. This focus is certainly not a bad thing, a sports car does not apologise for its focus on look, presence, and ignorance to practicality, fuel economy and serious usability. Likewise with this stove, it intends to burn a little hotter and faster, but to look fantastic whilst it does it. This character will suit (perhaps) most buyers. The likes of the Ambition and Ivar will suit the occasional serious user, but many others will favour the easy lighting, traditional cosy aesthetic and focus on supplemental heating for the evening that the Huntingdon provides so well.
