I honestly think the moment angus left and the guest hosts started is what gave the show the variety it needed to become as special as it is, and I think having permanent team captains able to take the piss out of the host is a fantastic dynamic that couldn't be scripted from the start of a show

Watching how Boris hosts, or attempts to, really gives you an insight into how his tenure as PM, especially during COVID, was managed. When bluster and big words meets reality.

Both Ian and Paul's ability to control the room is really fun to watch. Paul is a stand-up and improv actor, he knows how to read a room and tell jokes, a powerful combination. Ian is a journalist who has been through the legal wringer at this point in the show and knows what he can and can't get away with in British media. It's as milquetoast as political humor can get, but they know how to riff off each other and work the audience

He could easily have survived this, as despite what Merton thought, he was sharp-witted enough to deal with the insults that came his way, and the newspaper allegations would soon have been forgotten anyway. But, Paul Merton in particular didn't like him, and so used the opportunity to take him down, under the guise of it being for the good of the show. Paul Merton is a talented comedian, but a phoney human being. Angus Deayton spent his entire time on Have I Got News For You, under the false impression that he and Merton got on perfectly well, as they always parted on friendly terms after each show.

Everybody has some skeleton or other in their closet. The real touchstone of character is whether you try to take criticism with humor and good grace, or writhe around grinning and laughing like a goon making a big show of being a sport while flinging mud around in an effort to make yourself look virtuous by comparison.

That's what Paul said on Parkinson, but I think it's BS. It was funny and Angus had a great comeback. They regularly had and have had since people with patchy pasts and they've taken the piss out of them, why couldn't they do it with Angus? It would've been funny if done properly. Paul is the one who made it a problem by making it serious with that 'resigned for the sake of the programme' comment. Seemed like Paul had some really petty childish dislike of him for no real reason and just wanted to get rid of him.

I think the issue is HIGNFY has politicians and "celebrities" - I use the word loosely - on who have misbehaved in one fashion or another and then Ian and Paul skewer them, and it would be difficult bordering on impossible for the show to keep doing that if the person being skewered could simply turn around and start doing the same thing to Angus. Ergo, he had to go. 8 Out Of 10 Cats doesn't skewer its guests, or at least not in the same way, so there was opportunity there for Jimmy to take his lumps and carry on.

Ian got along with Angus and thought he did a great job. But as the sleaze kept leaking out, Angus' position was untenable and the BBC had told Merton and Hislop not to elaborate too much on it. So they were being held back because of Angus' misdeeds. Paul Merton did not get along with him but conceded Angus was a fantastic host. Its funny because Angus has gone on to have a great career and didn't really need the show. Merton needs HIGNFY as any outside project he's been involved with has flopped. Deayton knew he'd be roasted and it would have made the show look utterly hypocritical if he weren't. And iirc, it was the second time he'd been in some scandal so it would've undermined the whole ethos of the show if it were glossed over. PE didn't make much of it at all so I think it was the expected response from the show. I think the villains of the piece are the BBC Moral Conduct Police who sacked him after he put himself through what he knew would be the equivalent of a public execution. If he was brave enough to turn up that week, they should have kept him, seeing as they were too uwu to make the decision before. I don't think the general public cared and it would, as you say, have been chip paper by the next week.

The show today is definitely a shell of what it once was, though still worth a watch some weeks. The first 10 or so years with guest presenters were great, but the novelty has long since worn off and the number of topical, interesting or controversial people willing to appear has fallen sharply. As a result, the producers keep booking the same dozen or so "safe" guests, which leaves things feeling a little stale. I wouldn't be surprised if HIGNFY has vanished from our screens in 10 years' time.

the show doesnt work if the guy in the middle cant say anything about scandals without guests saying: and what about you? that moral highground is essential to the show format. @Martin Evans It seems we live in alternate universes😄How is British 'democracy' looking in Scotland? Oh we have none, and have instead to deal with the short-sighted stupidity and ignorance of the average English voter. You are just a sheep, easily coralled into voting against your own best interests 😏 lurching right with the crowd when we should so obviously have been sprinting left. Keep believing everything Murdoch prints and you will continue to sound like a cretin on this and many other topics😐

This is the problem with people mistaking total incompetence for likeability and then voting for them on that basis. That’s how we had a clown like Johnson as PM. Merton and Hislop saw through the act though.
