This is why the internet is so great. It is pretty much impossible to ban information on it. It is going to be interesting to see what the effect is going to be for the generations that are going to grow up with the internet so integrated into their lives and how they will as pre-teens and teens have access to any and all information they could want.

It is very possible to put up a firewall that checks whether a site has content you don't want accessed. But of course it's much easier for the user to think: "the firewall if blocking me from this site, the site exists, I can access it from another network, there's something interesting there" than "there are no books here about a topic I have no prior knowledge about. Let's go check somewhere else".

@@MrNickJ that and other means of passing the information around in the network is a lot easier than making your own copies of a banned book or even loaning a copy of it around, assuming one even exists.
