I once asked an aged barber (he'd been shaving men's faces for a living, for over 50 years) how he knew where to 'draw' the lines of a mustache or goatee. He told me he asks the customer to smile. He makes note of the lines on their face as they do. He would then work the edged of the hair so that it naturally continued and complimented those lines. It's not at all what I was expecting him to say.. But I thought that was a pretty cool answer, all the same. Everyone looks better with a nice warm smile! :)

Awesome video, Nick! It looked like you were pretty confident with that straight razor. Good job. I might have to use my straight razor for a shave pretty soon. It's been about 2.5 months since I've used it, but this video has definitely inspired me to pick it up again.

Dude, Nick... It was so satisfying watching that beard come off in those layers!!! I don't know why, but it gave me an extraordinarily fulfilling feeling to see! The 'stache looks pretty good; wish I could grow one like that. Though when you put the lather on, I think to go across the grain, the lather covered the handlebars, making it look like a shorter, regular mustache. I gotta say that one looked perfect for your face. The handlebars look like they're needing a leather hat along with them...if you know what I mean... Though it might be kinda cool to have everyone at work start calling you Dr Handlebar. "Paging Dr Handlebar. You're needed in the OR Dr Handlebar."

Nice shave with the straight didn't look like it took much effort! I'm still learning to shave with a straight too and get small nicks like that occassionally. Still using my right hand for left and right. You've got the technique down!

Gondolier is one of my favorite Soaps/aftershaves from PAA. But then I bought Speakeasy and it became my new favorite scent from them. All I can say is that it smells like a nice cologne. I wish I could grow a beard, I'm always clean shaven because my facial hair is patchy. I'm looking forward to watching your reviews of your new soaps.

When you shave with a straight razor (or even a safety razor with decent hair growth) does the blade cut smoothly, or does it take some effort?
@bheinatz1
@bheinatz1 8 жыл бұрын
Michael Pace I have always found that longer whiskers make for a very smooth and easy shave,with very little tug or hair pulling. The long whiskers just get mowed down.
@JeppeHSchultz
@JeppeHSchultz 8 жыл бұрын
Every hair is still only cut once, so it feels somewhat the same in smoothness. But the hair gets mowed, and can even get a little in the way. Let the lather be in your beard for some 2 mins before beginning the shave, and the hair gets softer, I feel.
@bheinatz1
@bheinatz1 8 жыл бұрын
JeppeHSchultz Great pro-tip. That or some kind of a pre-shave; anything that will soften and hydrate those hairs before shaving. Long facial hair, or short stubble, your preparation is paramount. Happy shaving!

does blade exposure make a difference to a certain point? I'm like 5 shaves in with my "Blue beards revenge shavett and I know a staight razor can flex more to your face where with the shavett it's just you and the blade's sharpness (I'm using feather...absolutely love it! thanks nick) but does a staight razor still beat shavetts? and also do you get deeper cuts with the straight razor?

Great Shave! You're right.. work with your straight more often, it will pay up, I can guarantee! I have the most sensitive skin and I now shave every single day with a straight (well... I had to switch from straight to a feather kamisori shavette, it's more practical and I do believe it's sharper)... BBS shave every single time! And I managed to take minimal time shaving that way in the morning, before heading to the office! it's my daily pleasure moment!
@jaquene9182
@jaquene9182 8 жыл бұрын
Manuel Rebello de Andrade I've noticed the same thing, shavettes are more practical daily use and when you put feather blades in it feels much sharper than a traditional straight razor.
@manelra
@manelra 8 жыл бұрын
I was using a sanguine shavette with a bic blade... funny enough, when I switched to the feather kamisori, I thought it was less sharp. But I was wrong. It's just different. Very smooth really. But I have to admit that although it feels sharper than a straight, it is less forgiving. but more practical ;)
