I'm 63 I tried so many times to sew n machine always broke. Well I thought it broke. After my 5 sewing machine I got a brother heavy duty for 210$ I'm so excited. This is my first year to Uribe and I have learned that my machine wasn't broke n I could fix it. So now I'm moving on. I made some animal crate mats and some catnip toys and I made my dad a lap memory quilt my version lol I added a pocket sewed a heart out in pocket so he always has my heart. He is 2400 miles away from me. I have never met him found him thru can test. Another story lol. I put my pictures in the pocket. May I ask what would you suggest to make next? I want to make cloths. Is there something I can recommend are even the next step . I'm surfing Uribe so much out there but I know I have to learn slowly and In steps too.thanks enjoy your summer

I've been sewing for only a year and learned lots from this video. I used to lengthen my stitches when quilting but they still looked terrible, wonky, close together. Turns out it wasn't my machine.. The serviceman said it worked great. Probably because I needed to use a walking foot to feed both sides at same time. I guess that could have the same effect as if my stitches were too short ????

Wow. I'm a type of learned I need to see things in action. Books can't learn me. So this is a great lesson I learned alot. I just got a brother heavy duty sewing machine. Took a decade but I finally got it. I'm so happy n excited to learn. So now I know what those numbers mean up to 5 and the reasons behind using each lenght. But there's other numbers can u help with what the others mean. I am looking on your videos n liking them all. Also the feet n different needles. If you don't have any lessons on using them I would be so happy if you could teach that. I watch a lot of videos n yours are always clear detailed n I can hear you. Thanks again for a fantastic tutorial.

I would like to learn about back stitching. I am new to sewing. I have purchase a pattern and of course it only explains what items get sewn together, but never when a back stitch is needed. This is also the same issue I have had with other people's video tutorials that assume the viewer knows to do certain things like back stitching, top stitching and basting. I have to rewind the video several times to see if they were back stitching or not.Sometime they back stitch and sometimes not and I don't know why and so I never know when I need to back stitch or not. Also in regards to back stitching, I do not know how many stitches do you back stitch. I've also seen some videos where it looks like they only back stitch one stitch and I am not sure if it is a back stitch or something else. As you can see I (maybe others too) need a video lesson regarding back stitching. Vanessa you explain things so well as to how to sew something, but also include the reason why a person needs to sew something a certain way or using a certain stitch. So to sum up this long paragraph regarding back stitching....HELP! I don't mean to get greedy, but a tension lesson would be helpful also. Thanks for this video. I learned a great deal with this video from what top stitching does and a baste stitch does. I learned about stitch length and when to change it. This may be embarrassing, but I learned that when you change the stitch length, it is the feed dogs that are making the length and not some magical thing inside the top part of my machine. So embarrassing! Thanks you Vanessa. My first project ever was from one of your videos and when I come across even newer sewers than me, I suggest TheCraftyGemini. Sorry for the length of this comment.

SarahMyK9 - In garment sewing, most seams need backstitching at the beginning and end. Tutorials don’t always mention it because it’s a given. I think if you’re not sure, go ahead and do the backstitching. Two exceptions are basting and gathering. In those cases, use a long stitch length and _no_ backstitching. Why? Because basting stitches are not meant to be permanent, and you may want to remove them. Gathering stitches are long because they’re easier to work with than short ones. In quilt making, most piecing does _not_ need backstitching. However, in a few cases, it does, and tutorials will specify this. The reason why backstitching isn’t done with quilt piecing is because seams are crossed with other seams. The criss-crossed seams lock the stitching, so backstitching isn’t necessary. Hope this helps.

Hello from Michigan

Why does the straight stitch show a width of greater length than 0.0? On my Brother if I have the needle in the far left position for a straight stitch the width defaults to 0, which makes sense. If I move the needle to the center position, but still a straight stitch, the width changes to a default of 3.5. I noticed on your machine it also shows a width of 3.5. Does this actually change anything with the stitch? Thanks!!
@TheCraftyGemini2 жыл бұрын
A straight stitch has no width like a zig zag stitch so the width setting determines the starting needle position for the straight stitch. That's all.
@lindajohnson86342 жыл бұрын
@@TheCraftyGemini that makes sense. Thanks!!

Numbers on older machines are often the number of stitches per inch. 25 mm = 1 inch, so a 3 mm stitch is approximately an 8 on your settings.

What about width? How does that work with a straight stitch?
@TheCraftyGeminiАй бұрын
There’s no width to adjust in a straight stitch. When you move the dial for stitch width it moves the needle position but it will still just stitch a straight stitch.
@lettiesuebailey73394 жыл бұрын
Sorry I don’t understand millimeters. What does that convert into in inches
@TheCraftyGemini4 жыл бұрын
The mm measurements as they relate to stitch length are too small to talk about it in inches. For example 1/4” = 6.35mm. So, when I’m talking about 2mm and 3mm it’s a lot smaller than 1/4”.
@AlexKall6 ай бұрын
1 inch = 25.4 millimeters. So 2 mm divided by 25.4 would give you the length in inches. Which isn't very useful. If you instead take 25.4 divided by 2 mm you will get number of stitches per inch. So 2 mm would be 12.7 stitches per inch. If you want to know how many millimeters you need to set to get a specific stitches per inch you can divide 25.4 with the number och stitches you want. For example you want 10 stitches per inch, you divide 25.4 with 10 and you get 2.54 so if you set your machine to 2.5 you will get about 10 stiches per inch.
