Straight Up Old School: Henry 360 Buckhammer

The 360 Buckhammer’s birth came about from the partnership of two powerhouse companies: Henry and Remington Ammunition. With a tall tagline of “straight up better,” we simply had to get down and dirty with the round as it stakes its claim in the straight-wall hunting world. Today, we look at one of Henry's first hosts for the 360 Buckhammer: the lever-action Steel Side Gate.

I bought one last October. The .360 buckhammer is an interesting caliber to reload for. I have Hodgdon reloading data and my most accurate load is 180 gr Speer, 36 grains of Accurate 1680. The max load is 38.5 grains of 1680, but as I approached that load I got flattened primers and sticky extraction. My load duplicates Remington factory loading. I topped the rifle with a Leupold 1.5x4 pig plex scope. It is a killer.

I've heard that this cartridge was derived from the 30-30, the dimensions of the base are the same, but it isn't necked down to take the smaller diameter bullet. If that is the case, I would think that every company that makes a 30-30 would also make the 360 Buckhammer, since the only new part is the barrel. The extractor doesn't care what the bullet looks like.

If I was advising Vista’s ammo group lol I’d ask why this cartridge isn’t already promised to come in Federal Premium’s HammerDown line since that’s something they can do. I’d also recommend they see what they can do to get Marlin and any other gun makers to chamber it and get .358 bullets like the Core-lokt and Sierra Pro-Hunter available for reloaders. From what I know, hunters who have experience with .358 calibers from the 35 Rem to the 358 Win absolutely love them but folks need assurances this new cartridge isn’t gonna fail like others before.

I can tell you from experience that rubber hardens up over time becoming a solid hunk of crap. I'd rather have a steel butt plate.
