You are right! Knowing the grain of your fabric is important to any sewing project. People tend to think it only matters if you are stitching garments, but it's more universal than that.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm somewhat new to quilting, but I have sewn for many years, and did not know to watch for that long vertical wrinkle that indicates uneven grain, or how to get rid of it. What? You're like a scientist of fabric:)

@petmomful Once you find the straight grain (this video), then you have to decide which direction to load it, and that can vary based on the type of die. For example, with strip cutters, it is better to have the selvage perpendicular to the direction of the cut, but for triangles & squares it's the opposite. No matter what you are cutting, you need to align the fabric with the blades, not with the side of the die. Please watch my other video called "Align Fabric Grain for Perfect Cuts."
