totally agree Stephen pure nz heritage gone with a slapdash of green paint( i think they're green now) i took a photo of them back around 2014 while waiting for Ross Galt's opposite to rebuild a van doorlock, thinking to myself they would eventually be painted over- back then EasySteel were trading from the warehouse but i don't think they were the prats who vandalised an icon.

Such a great great song. The Straitjacket Fits were one of my fave bands of the late 80s, and Hail got high rotation on my stereo. Was in Dunedin in Feb 1990, on a tramping trip with a mate, and the Fits were playing in an o-week gig at Otago Uni - we were over the freaking moon, until we found out you could only buy a ticket if you were a Uni student - aaaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!!!

Remember when Karen Hay said after playing this on RWP: "Well that was completely full of every cliche known to pop so no wonder it is going to be a huge international success" or some such droll, dry, ironic, deadpan, witty, satirical comment. A bewitching dark facetious icon.
@ten10strips856 жыл бұрын
That quote is completely off the mark though. The song isn't "full of every cliche known to pop" that's the most inane, reductive, idiotic description I can imagine. Combing elements, tropes, motifs to create something unique and new - which, to me anyway, still stands out as a unique song... doesn't even warrant explanation, if you don't get it you don't get it, but ffs why slog on about a style of music that you fundamentally, at the basest level, do not understand? Robert Christgau started all this fucking nonsense, and he continues, deaf to rock'n'roll, forever onward, mesmerizing countless dipshits....

Having just read Shayne Carter's autobiography, I feel very disappointed that I will never know exactly how they felt shooting that footage, how many takes etc ... because that is one stinky, fumefilled tunnel and I imagine they all felt rather woozy and were possibly sick afterwards. Call me a cloth-eared git (G'wan! Iddill be WHUN!), but I've NEVER understood the mass appeal of thiss overrated piece of distinktly average DinniDinn pop. Sure, the descent into the chorus is a cool wee russh, but Shayne's whiny-arse vocals simply activate my hackles ("the bleughdy-bleuagh" lyric IS brillo, mynd!), & the Pixies-styled 'quiet-NOIZEEE-quiet' compositional trick was alreaddy gettinnabitt tyred even by '87 (minnd u, I musst also admit to a certain amount of personal BIAS here, as I never liked Mr Scarter, dating back to my first hen counter wiffim bakkin 1980, b4 I even knew that thiss obnoxious little twat was a 'Living Rokk Legend' - HAW!). But still, putting all regurtitative urges ASSIDE whor the moa-ment, thiss song STILL ownly gets a 6.5 outter 10 from thiss partickular pair o' hex-ChurchChurch 'Merciless Earss'. (Plz forward all deaf threats & abuse to: Yo' Momma! c/o Cloth-Eared Gitsville Penitentiary, Folsom). xOx :-D
