Date of adventure - September 2020
We’re not too sure how the residents of South Dakota view their winter snow storms, but a prediction of a slight dusting of snow for the area turned into almost a foot of snow. Not something you want to see when you’re traveling and living on a motorcycle.

Best Accessories I have ever acquired Is heated pants and jacket. My wife agrees. We have had them for twenty years and they still work great. Gloves and socks and a Rheostat are also available. I have never been cold while riding, plugs in under the seat, and they work well with rain gear.

It's funny , We stayed at Hidden Valley for the 74th Rally. The high for the week was 68 degrees. We knew it was suppose to be cold, but the added elevation made it even colder. We left a day early because the low was 35 degrees. Oh yes, the Dakotas.

I live in Idaho and a gold prospector friend of mine rode a two-wheel-drive Ural motorcycle with a sidecar all winter. He was quite a sight to see coming over the mountain to town with a fur hat, goggles, big gauntlet style fur mittens on, and all hunched up over his motorcycle to stay warm LOL...

I love this kind of stuff. Getting stuck in a snow storm is the epitome of an adventure. I recently went thru a crazy nasty hail storm while visiting Yosemite and as miserable as we were with temps in the high 40's, raining, hail and mud slides thru Tioga pass there was no place I had rather been then right there, right then. Deuces ✌️

Here's my suggestion once the roads clear: In the AM about 7:00, face directly at the rising Sun. Now raise your right arm horizonal to the ground and point your index finger straight out. Now point your M/Cs in that direct, hop on and head out until you reach warmer weather. You can always return to the North once winter is over. Be safe!

bike covers traveling take up too much room and are too heavy.....and if used in bad weather they have tendencies to mildew, before drying out if packed tight and damping other items....Makes a big mess....I used to use two trash bags....one for windshield and one for seat...or a half cover which would fold up to the size of a coke can...
@itzcaseykc
@itzcaseykc 3 жыл бұрын
@@lcasey6597 Yeah. Didn't consider the mildew aspect. Despite having very lightweight covers, it *would* take up space that otherwise could be used for something else. Not having a large trailer on that one bike, a cover isn't as feasible as I had initially thought. It *was* a good idea tho.

Get an Aerostich bike cover. My first lasted 9 years and 110,000 miles, now have a new one. Packs down into it's own pocket. Black dries off quickly. Not inexpensive but great value in my opinion. It lives in my saddle bag on my FJR. I would use it as a shelter if needed in an emergency. No mildew issues at all.

To keep your glass and panels 'ice-and-snow' free, just keep a small squirt bottle (like WIndex) full of Rain-X windshield fluid...spray as needed. It melts ice and snow down into -F numbers! Makes 'clean-up' very easy. Next year...map your 'regions' for where you want to be at what time of year (like, 'leave Alaska no later than Aug 15', 'leave Colorado below 8,000-ft by Sept 25', etc.). Another GREAT tool to use to 'map regions' is the Burpee Seed Grow Regions chart...easy to see 'areas to stay in, or out of' by given calendar days. South Padre Island in the Winter isn't a bad 'wintering' spot...as is South Florida (carnies used to do this, for the very same reason...though costs are a LOT HIGHER than they had to deal with). USE A PERSONAL PLANNER to 'zone plan', so you almost-NEVER have to deal with snow!!! (though I don't know I'd take nice 'dressers' down into Central America at this time...in the old-days, you could plan a 'winter-over' in Belize...they DO speak English as a primary language...but again, more dangerous now, and prices are MUCH higher than they used to be).

Great footage. It does look nice when it snows but a pain when camping in a tent. I got caught at a winter rally in New Zealand (Brass Monkey) one year when it blew and snowed and the tent collapsed on me, Had to us a camp chair to hold an area of the tent up so I could stay under cover. It's all about the adventure. Have a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

I road through "Freezing Fog" outside of Wasco, Oregon heading to camp at Cottonwood Canyon State Park. "Freezing Fog" are two terrifying words when you're on two wheels. By the time I realized I was in it I only could try to push through. I just watched the road and hoped that there was still enough ambient heat from the day that the frost wasn't forming on the road yet. Fortunately I made it safely. Two hours later though a FedEx truck slid off the road and down a steep canyon. The driver was okay from what the Ranger told me. Still scary stuff.

Hey There , Thanks for the video. I have been touring on my bike for a while now. As a matter of fact I got my first Time Out camper in 1977. Didn't see many trailers behind motorcycled way back then... Got to say I got lots of attention ... Always had a audience while setting up. I always got out of that part of the country know later than the second week in August. The first time I didn't was a real adventure. LoL I'm so glad that equipment has gotten better sense 1969. I still love what I do and hope to be able to do it for a while. You two be safe and enjoy this adventure. Looking forward to seeing your next video. Holler if you need anything. Your friend. Billy

There have been many major snow storms in the Hills that were only supposed to be a dusting. You guys definitely had the right attitude. Can't do much about it just have to deal with it. Plus you have one heck of a memory.

First time visitor. Nice video. I live in New Hampshire. When you left the tent up I was thinking "No, don't leave it up in the snow. It will collapse! Then you decided to lay it down and I was thinking "No, don't lay it down!. It will freeze in the snow!" Oh, and here in New Hampshire, a foot of snow is no big deal, too. Thanks for posting!

I'm so glad to finally see this video. I've been waiting ever since you were here to see how you put it all together. Yes, we do have crazy weather here sometime! Great to see your positive attitudes about it all. ;-) You'll be happy to know we have only had one significant snow storm since then and we had a warm week and 72 degree day here just last week! I can't wait to see where you headed next! Stay safe you two!

Been there, almost done that! We were caught in very frosty weather the morning after our excursion on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad a few years back. We stayed in a motel though, so were snuggly and warm. Still had to dress head to toe in heated gear to travel the next morning. What an adventure! I didn't realize Texicans were so entertaining!!!! Also, suggest you invest in covers for bikes and trailer. I cover mine every night. Keeps out weather and prying eyes.

WOW! You're a hardy and determined pair! I remember camping at Yellowstone in a an Apache tent trailer in August of 1965 (no heater or electric hookup). It SNOWED overnight. The water in our wash basin was solid ice and we nearly froze, as well. We never went on another vacation without hats, mittens, scarves, heavy sweatshirts, and extra blankets. Oh yeah, before the snow, a BEAR wandered through our campsite when we were getting ready for bed. Afterward, my dad left us in the trailer and went out to "defend someone else's site" (mom's words), she was furious! BTW, I would have emptied your tent and brought it into the cabin to dry; and then packed it away; but that's just me. Carry on and Happy Trails!
@TwoWheelsBigLife
@TwoWheelsBigLife 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are so right about the tent. We initially thought it was going to just be cold with some rain and slight snow - nothing our tent couldn't handle, but it quickly got out of hand. Lesson learned that hard way. Love your story!

We live in South Dakota and were actually in Rapid City the day it snowed. We got another snow in October but it all melted shortly and don't have any now. It was very nice until a couple of days ago when the temps went down to normal. Great trip you guys are on!! Be safe.

I made a motorcycle trip from Casper WY to Cody..over Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge MT and had planned to make it to the Black Hills this same weekend. On the way through Joliet MT it was 103 degrees. I cut the Black Hills part of the trip off to make it back to Casper before this winter storm hit. Glad you both made it through safely

Been reading some comments and can't believe how ignorant some people are. You have to keep explaining to them it was a freak snow storm. I've been riding since 68 and have run into similar situations and I admire the way you made the best of it. The same week my wife and I left central Alberta and headed for Watertown National Park putting on about 1500 miles total ; no rain ; no snow averaging about 65 F everyday.

Thanks for reinforcing my preference to always book a cabin or motel room anytime after late Aug early Sept when traveling past 40 degrees north. I usually carry too much gear I think, one set for cold & one for warm/hot. But the heavy winter gear has come in handy many times when the bike wind chill was single digits in MT and two days later 110 F in Amarillo. Nice report from you guys.
