To compound the problems, a Winter Storm is closing in and temperatures are dropping....

@mikel9567 3 жыл бұрын
@@devonwatt2194 You fail to understand the concept of an Emergency kit. This isn't about luxury, this is about necessity. It should be different for every person and every situation. When I was an EMT working in the city, my emergency kit was pretty basic. Why? Because I was commuting to work and was in an urban area. At most, I might need to spend a few hours in my car so I didn't need a lot. When I go hunting or I take the quads in the woods, I pack a much different kit. I pack one that is similar to what Luke has. I carry extra gas, food, a small tent, first aid, clothes, an axe, a battery powered chainsaw, a basic tool kit, some rope, fire starters, etc. Why? Because I could be 40 or more miles into the mountains. Help isn't coming to me for days, even if I manage to contact them it will still be hours. I don't think Luke expects people to copy him because you should be thinking about your own situation. When I go hunting, almost every hunter I run into has set ups similar to Luke's. It isn't that uncommon if you're someone who is going to go into the mountains. And let me tell you, I've responded on calls in the mountains before and it doesn't usually end well for the patient. I don't usually see the prepared people in the back of my ambulance and I''ve never loaded a prepared person into a body bag before. You laugh at Luke all you want and claim hes living in luxury or his kit is not practical, but he is being very smart and practical with his choices.

I live in a small town, but just 20 kilometers away there's a big forest area (national park, actually) where people have gotten lost and stuck when trees blocked access roads. If that's a risk you run because you go there often or you live in a hamlet somewhere in the forest, a chainsaw would be a wise piece of kit indeed. Since I need to make trips up the hills in winter, even I carry snow chains in the trunk. Never needed them so far, but you just never know. I'm from Germany btw, so no handgun, otherwise I'd keep one on me for wild animals.

Paper towels, aluminum foil. . . wasn’t on my radar. Thanks for the video! Informative and helpful! 👍🏻👍🏻 We had a wildfire come within 2 miles of our house last year. Law enforcement was evacuating neighborhoods and we were both racing home to get our dogs. We ended up being able to stay as the wind remained in our favor and a fire break was cut, keeping the fire from getting to us. I remember being so thankful that all my gear was packed and in place.

The emergency bags I keep in my 3 cars are seasonal and packed for different use. The minivan, no longer used for long trips just has a "get me home" bag. 2 days of water (minimum), some high calorie snacks, water PURIFIER/container, first aid, lighting, fire starter, etc. But my Jeep and travel midsized SUV have more of a 2+ days camping trip arrangement. Every Early Nov to late March, I swap out the winter packs with summer packs that is mostly the food items geared towards the warmer climate and sleep systems, which allows for more food/water. Watching your videos (and others, I can't lie), has helped me see how things WORK for other people and let me adjust accordingly, without "testing" it out. ;-)

Excellent topic and information! :D And very timely.. with too many recent stories of people stuck for hours or longer, because of everything from road closures/big rig crashes on freeways and highways, to individual vehicle issues as you stated. I got a few more ideas from this video, to further enhance my own gear in addition to all the "stuff" I routinely carry. One thing I carry that most people probably don't, is a set of over-shoe non-skid devices similar to "Yak Traks" in case of freezing rain/ice and needing to get out of my vehicles for any reason. If I'm injured from a slip/fall I can't self-rescue or help anyone else! :D

This is a TIMELY topic, well done!. I carried a Mr Buddy Heater with just the small 1# propane cylinders & found just the pilot light is sufficient HEAT overnight while sleeping. In my car, I carry 100 hour liquid candles that come with a transparent plastic windscreen that fits on top & prevents the flame from being blown out; this provides sufficient HEAT overnight to keep the interior survivable in cold temperatures. Mainstay Emergency Rations is my go-to emergency food supply. 400 calories per square for 3 times a day/night for a maximum of 3 days/nights. No cooking required. This is the same Emergency Rations found in lifeboats. No cooking, No water required & the rations have a 7-year shelf life. Yes, both vehicles have an el-cheapo portapotty & an adequate emergency supply of water, clothing & equipment. Well Done when rescuing the lost/stranded young couple. Hopefully, they've learned their lessons about preparedness.

start your preperations by telling someone where you are going, and when you plan on coming back. ask them to call for help if you do not contact them by a certain date. a good dry bag with shoulder straps is a better option to keep your gear in, you see canoe trippers use them all the time. they work great for portages. imo, you have enough gear to last a month or longer in this video.. hence the importants of having someone else who will call for help, and get a search party started, looking for you. thanks for another good, informative video Luke.

Mylar emergency blankets. I was with my wife at North Rim of Grand Canyon doing contract work in the National Parks. We were in a 2000 Ford Excursion. The weather went dangerously cold, 13 degrees with wind chill. We were supposed to have a room available but they sold out because of the storm. We spent the night with engine running (windows slightly cracked for air). It was beyond cold. Even though I'm always prepped being in this situation was scary and uncomfortable. I used three mylar emergency blankets to line the inside and my wife used the Military Sleep system you spoke of. She was warm and cozy. I was uncomfortable and slightly chilled as I was sitting in the front monitoring the heater and vehicle running. I used my army wool blanket and my "Woobie" poncho liner. Those mylar blankets kept the heat around 55 degrees all night long, blocking the leaks along the doors, etc. They are small and lightweight, and you can easily pack them into nooks and crannies not taking up any space!

I always keep water and food in the car as well as some blankets and candles. A little bit of heat can make all the difference. You don't need a surgical kit but a good realistic first aid kit is a must. My husband kept after me to do this, but I blew it off as overkill till I saw him work out of his kit at some accidents we ran up on. He came home bandaged up one night after he had been clearing land at our cabin sight. A locust branch swung and hit him on the inside of the elbow breaking the thorn off inside impinging the joint where he could not move it. In his remarkably small kit he keeps a set of very thin forceps. Using the forceps for a probe he was able to find the the thorn despite the blood, get hold of it with the forceps and remove it, freeing his elbow. He cleaned the wound and bandaged it and removed the thorn all from a little kit he had packed into a zip lock sandwich bag.

I live in a town in the UK. While I don't travel much more than 30 miles from home, there are plenty of places that one can get stuck and a breakdown has previously meant a 3 hour wait. The back of my car always has dehydrated meals, cooker, water, sleep system and tent. Plus I always have my day bag - too much to list here but I am confident of managing for a couple of days or more if I had to. Some of my friends think I'm bonkers but then I'm usually the one they turn to when they need what you call a band aid or water top up, food or pain relief, power bank etc. Top video, you have given me more ideas, thank you.

Couple things I keep in my truck would be road flares: good for starting fires, signaling for emergencies, and melting snow if truck is stuck. Next I have a large medical kit that I'm trained with and understand, and lastly personal preference a 2 ton hydraulic trolley jack incase of a flat tire. Love your videos and I always look forward to them!

I live in a small camping trailer in the Tonto forest in Arizona and Mr. Heater is my buddy in the winter. When I get up at 4 in the morning you can see your breath. I start the heater off on the high setting for about 10 minutes, then switch it over to low and wait for the trailer to heat up to about 70 degrees. Mr. Heater is run from the small green propane camping bottles that I refill from a larger cylinder. I never feel compelled to open a window for ventilation. Three cheers for Mr. Heater.

Thanks for the reminder. I have a first aid kit, a big container of water, and car rescue tools in my car but not much else. I might repack the go-bag I keep in the house and put it in the car - I'm more likely to need it there, and if we did have to leave the house on foot it's most likely the car would be outside to grab it from. The other thing we need in my location is bushfire blankets. They're expensive but they can save your life so I need to make it a priority to get some. I might start with two - one for the front seat and one for the back, and build that up to one per person later. They can double up as insulation so it's a twofer. Smoke masks would also be sensible.

Forgotten gem for comfort and survival. Roll the truck, gear is wet, you are wet, below freezing, matches aren’t working. What keeps you alive? Wool. My grandma told me stories of people letting their wool coat freeze so they could crack the ice out of it, put it back on and survive. 80% of its insulating properties intact even when wet. “Filson Mackinaw Cruiser” is what I use everywhere.

I really think it's not a bad ideal to have a portal carbon monoxide detector when running things like mr buddy in enclosed spaces. That's not to down a set up or anything. It's just an added layer of protection. For those that are a little nervous it might help set their mind at ease as well.

I live in the UK so don't face nearly the same conditions, however I do keep a number of things in my vehicle, besides the manufacturer supplied. Tow Rope, jump leads, warning lights, tire pressure gauge, air compressor, tool kit, basic first aid kit, hi-vis clothing, hammer (it's come in use a few times, especially on wheel nuts). I drive for a living right now and have a kit bag I take to work and keep in my car when not at work which has: 2X Power banks, 12v to usb adapter (plus just about all cables you could need for any device twice), two high powered torches, a head torch, two aldi strap on mini lights (red and white), first aid kit, long life snacks, 1 MRE, snow shovel (our vans carry salt grit in winter), hi-vis clothing, wet weather clothing, leatherman, tea/ coffee making supplies and about £20 in various coins in case I need them. It's come in a lot of use, we rely on PDA's that eat batteries for breakfast so the charging and power banks are a must.

Gee, Luke, there was still room in there for YOU! Considering where you live and go, NOT overkill at all. I drive soobarooski ootbakowie, #5, now, and keep a similar but much lesser 'kit' in the back, also. I can lay the back seat forward and sleep back there, and also have a 10 X 12 tarp so I can make a shelter behind with the tail gate up. I use an old Optimus 8R stove (little bro to the 111) with a sigg bottle of coleman fuel and a folding firebox and a nano for cooking, which I use regularly on outings. I have had that 8R for over 50 years, and it has Never let me down. Just be careful to not let it run dry or you can burn the wick. I have parts, but have not had to use them. Be Outside! Jerry N.

Good kit! A couple of things that I have always kept in my truck in addition to the stuff you mentioned are some insulated coveralls and a pair of winter boots. The coveralls protect your clothing if you have to do something like dig out the truck, change a tire, or repair/try to repair something on the truck that's broken. Believe me, you'll be glad to have them, and the boots are just as important if not more so. I'm typically not wearing heavily insulated & waterproof boots in my day-to-day life. In my case, I'm usually wearing either cowboy boots or hiking boots, neither of which are a good choice for walking in deep snow. A good pair of winter boots, Sorels in my case, could literally be a lifesaver! A wool blanket, a rain poncho (I have the Pathfinder 7'x7' Poncho/Tarp), a UCO Candle Lantern w/extra candles, a Grabber Outdoors Emergency Space Blanket/Tarp (not the lightweight mylar version), and a small foam pad to sit on also make great additions. If you try to walk out and find yourself in a situation where you need to warm up fast but can't in out of the weather that foam pad, candle lantern, and poncho/wool blanket can really save the day. Get out of the wind as best you can. Then sit on the pad to insulate your butt from the ground, stretch the poncho/tarp and/or the wool blanket over you like a small tent, and then light the candle lantern and put it on the ground between your legs. The first time you do it you'll be amazed at how warm you can get under that little 'tent'. It can be in the 20's outside but in the 50's or 60's under that poncho/tarp/blanket! This is something you can do in literally just a couple of minutes, and it can save your life.
