Stranded non-Ukrainians fleeing Russian conflict complain of ‘racism’ at the border

Nearly half a million people have fled Ukraine so far since the Russian invasion of the country began on February 24, 2022, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Most of the refugees have been heading west to Poland, with others entering Hungary, Moldova, Romania and beyond. Foreign nationals have been among those trying to escape the fighting. Some of them allege that they were badly treated while trying to cross the border from Ukraine.

It's normal for people to study abroad some international student work there best to study abroad in order to give back to their families from there home countries even to the migrant workers because some of these people work and study in ukraine for "opportunities." A lot of students and migrant workers come from third world countries and again to support there family and to have a future. We know it is a priority for the citizens to leave because there is a war but your nationality or where you are from doesn not matter to escape war.

That's not totally true, I heard about the discrimination going on in the Ukraine against Indian and African people stranded there from my local news station. Even though the media isn't always accurate and yes somethings are not covered whether it is intentionally covered up or overlook it's up to us to choose between fact and fiction by doing research and substantiate its accuracy. That is why I'm standing my ground and backing up what I wrote in response to this video. Because right is right and wrong is wrong regardless who's giving or receiving.

yes, but only 10% have ability to live with train and buses before war catches up. So Ukrainians prioritized sending away small kids with their mothers on buses and trains. And other families walked to border like those students were forced to do. While millions are still unable to leave. Not to mention Ukrainian men are not able to leave and are fighting in war. Yeah this report is kind of glossing over things.... There've been reports of international students being picked up and thrown off of trains, or waiting in the snow, exposed, for up to a day and a half, of being held at gunpoint. There's multiple videos of people being beaten by baton or being kicked while prone. The worst of it seemed to happen at the Polish border - which in the last 48 hours seems to have transformed itself - but for the first 4 days, it was really really bad.

I’ve seen a foreign young lad pushing away a lady with her 2-3 year-old as he was trying to get on the train in Lviv (western Ukraine). Shall we call him a racist? Or was he just scared, as were the rest of the people? I’ve also seen a Ukrainian guy being pulled off the train on the third day of evacuation because the priority for those trains was given to women with children.

@@anaana4345 I'm not blaming anyone - everyone is scared and stressed as their lives fall apart around them =( I am sure the language barrier and and cultural barrier also does not help matters at all. These university students are kind of considered as "kids" in Asia - like the same level as ignorant high-schoolers. I know that in European countries that is not the case. I also want to not that the Polish border is now very safe - the UN and Germany stepped in and processes were changed rapidly to make border crossing safer. Boarding emergency trains from conflict areas is now impossible though, as Ukrainians are given priority no matter how many days the students have been waiting on the platform. They have resorted to just walking the dozens of kilometers out of Kharkiv and Kyiv.

@@PackOfWolves I've been volunteering with Red Cross at Lviv train station, all foreigners are given exactly the same amount of support as Ukrainians in terms of food, drinks, shelter, etc. And yes, the situation at the border is now much better and in fact crossing on foot seems to be an easier way out, takes less time.

I have seen other reports with the same video footage. Mainly the people who weren't Ukrainian were men. They had/have a strict rule about getting the women and children out first. They are also waiting and coordinating in the philippine embassy in poland. ONE INDIAN student said in her video don't trust their embassy becuase they hung up on them and most of the african embassy said save your self. The priority of poland, romanian etc are the women and children.

Every country does this…in some form or another. During pandemic Australia gave citizens and PR income support before considering internationals. If those of colour living in Ukraine as citizens/PR and were being denied entry or whatever it is, then… yeah that’s racism…but who knows I am not there, so…hard to say. I’m legit just chilling in bed watching this unfold after coming from gym and eating at a restaurant with friends, life is so different that I doubt not many of the comments section can truly comprehend what’s going on over there. What is wrong with learning European culture and history, same as Europeans learning about our culture. Also we pay more than you do when we study abroad.
