14:07 pocket universes is the best way to describe Tom King's work, it makes the stories a lot easier to read and enjoy. I do hear he's also going to be 'integral' to James Gunn's DC movies so.....bit worried on that, given his penchant for writing characters OOC to fit his narratives, but... here's hoping it all goes well. Fantastic vid as always, Omar. 👍

@@DrLynch2009 I'd say at this point he may as well have already done so, with how many of his stories get stated/treated as non-canon by DC, even after he himself says they are.

A character can’t be written OOC when it’s a different continuity. You are comparing one continuity/earth with another, they are two different characters. Comparing character A’s version “main continuity” with an else world version can literally never be considered OOC because they’re different people.

"He kind of writes his own pocket universe". Omar you have just described Brian Michael Bendis and his treatment of characters! I've not read this version Adam Strange by Tom King (I did like Vision though), but I've heard criticism enough of it (and his Batman and Human Target). Actually I'm not sure why Marvel or DC really let certain writers get away with writing characters in this way (IE: can't be bothered to clue up on the characters they are writing). They might as well invent new characters to tell whatever the story is. Still, I'm a little intrigued by this though.

My worst fears is one day King would want to pull one of this "Black Label" character assassination series on Superman.
@devanbarrios9216 Жыл бұрын
I mean, he did write a Superman story for those Walmart exclusive comics. It's called Up In The Sky. And, as someone who doesn't really like Tom King's work, I thought it was really good.
@Syncratci Жыл бұрын
Up in the Sky exists and it's one of the better modern Superman stories.
@CAPS0L Жыл бұрын
Why is that a fear? If its out of continuity , who cares what happens to the characters? I think it's awesome to see these characters reimagined in a non continuity book. After seeing what he did with Supergirl, Id love to see Tom King write a 12-issue Superman mini series with real stakes.
@devanbarrios9216 Жыл бұрын
I read Strange Adventures when it was coming out and I thought it was all around pretty good. I wish the ending was a bit more morally gray. [SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING] I thought it was dumb to kill Adam in the second to last issue. It felt like a last minute story change. I also wish we never got a clear answer on if Adam was working with the Pyykts.

While Tom King is a very polarizing comic book author, my biggest issue is the fact that DC has labeled this 400+ page book a deluxe edition and it doesn't have a sewn threw binding. It's essentially just another trade paper back that's been cased in. I have other things I'd rather spend my money on.
@collectingmemoriesyt Жыл бұрын
Yeah, with this page count and the price of it it really should have sewn binding.
@andyking8524 Жыл бұрын
It’s not glued binding. It is sewn binding but DC put so much glue on it that it looks like glue binding but it you look carefully you can see the thread passing through the pages joining the blocks together.
@simpleton_dc2149 Жыл бұрын
@@andyking8524 If it was sewn through binding the book would lay flat when open and you would see the spine of the book "threw up" which is the proper term for the shape the spine makes when open. I believe Omar refers to this shape often as the eye of the book. You also don't get any gutter loss with a book that has a sewn binding. With sewn binding the thread can be seen in the middle of each signature (a section of collected pages that has been folded in half) running parallel along the spine. There shouldn't really be any glue inside the pages of a book that is sewn, it should all remain on the outside spine of the signatures. It could be possible that some perfect binding machines kerf the spine of the book block and lace thread in the kerfs. If that's the case the thread would run perpendicular to the spine. My guess is the only sewn hardcover books DC actually sells are the omni's and the absolute editions, but that's just a guess.
@simpleton_dc2149 Жыл бұрын
@@andyking8524 if you look at 19:41 you can see how the signatures of the book look more pointed than round... that's probably an indication that its a glued binding. A perfect binding machine grinds the spine before gluing to promote adhesion.

Another Deluxe edition wasted on an horrible Tom King book. The reason why all his mini-series are black label is due to the fact that even at DC they realized that King is basically unable to write a character properly therefore let's gonna put it in the black label category and call it a day. Adam Strange becomes a war criminal, Mr.Terrific was ruined by doing a completely 180 on his most important moment (like if Spider-Man would say that he's glad that Gwen Stacy died) and Strange's wife becomes the typical Tom King's female character: the boss mommy wife married to an incompetent and whiny man. Tom King can be appreciated only by people that know nothing on the character he's writing, that's why Gunn appreciated this series, i can assure you he's never read anything related to Adam Strange or Mr.Terrific (or Supergirl)

I don’t know much about Adam Strange so can’t say much about that, but I know Supergirl, and Woman of Tomorrow is one of the best Supergirl series. I got to speak about it with a bunch of die-hard Supergirl fans, who absolutely loved it. Woman of Tomorrow is probably one of his best works.
@niccoloproia3678 Жыл бұрын
@@Funkey_Monkey31 One Bad Day Riddler is probably Riddler's worst story ever (and i thought that O Neil's The Question couldn't be beaten). Just the fact that he writes a Riddler that doesn't need to use riddles and that sees them just as his shtick is an enormous red flag, Robert Kanigher understood how to properly write the character and he did it in the freaking 60's but Tom "pretentious" King can't wrote a Riddler that doesn't seem a watered down version of the Joker. The Human Target had amazing art but that's it, how King massacred my boy Martian Manhunter is simply horrendous

Vision and Human Target are the only books of his I like. But I understand how many hate Human Target because of the way he writes Manhunter and Gardner. But yes if you’ve read one Tom King story, you’ve read them all-Mister Miracle, Supergirl, Human Target, etc. all have the same alcoholic protagonist.
