If you want to be technically correct, _trade paperback_ and _graphic novel_ are talking about different things. _Trade paperback_ refers to format; it's any book (comics or prose) published around that page size. It can contain a graphic novel or a collection of short stories. Corresponding terms are comic book, hardcover, etc. _Graphic novel_ refers to content. It's a long-form comics story, as opposed to a short story. A graphic novel can be published as a trade paperback. A graphic novel can also be published in instalments as single issues, like _Watchmen_ was, for example. (This is no different to the Sherlock Holmes novels that were first published in _The Strand_ magazine.) The key thing is that it was plotted as a self-contained story. Comics written in story arcs are equivalent to a series of novels, like many fantasy novel series. Corresponding terms would be graphic short story or continuous serial.

I dont really give a shit about buying low/selling high and getting a profit and being a 'smart' collector all that. I just like to read some DC runs and TPB or hardcovers are way easier to do that than buying every individual issue.

I do both lol. I tend to buy the floppy issues and then the hardcover or TPB collections. I read the floppies once, and then if I want to re-read them I go to the TPB or hardcovers. With books like Batman, I have issues #400-713, but I don’t read from that collection. I read from TPBs or Hardcovers. For reading I have recently discovered that I really like omnibus collections. They offer huge amounts of material in nice, hardcover books. They often tend to be oversized, with larger pages.
@FrankBergdoll9 жыл бұрын
Nice video! I really enjoyed it! A couple thought's (meant in the spirit of helpfulness) Tip 1: I am not sure about the term "floppies" - as an older collector, I just call them "comics". For bags and boards, if you want to be serious about collecting them, try to get mylar bags over the poly bags. They will not discolour like to poly bags. Tip: for modern books, get "SILVER" sized boards for "MODERN" sized bags. It frames the comic and keeps them nice. Also, consider getting comic "drawers" for singles (the slide in and out ones you mention). Small nitpick, a "dust jacket" covers the hardcover, a "slipcase" encases the book as a separate (usually cardboard) unit. Like a box with the edge opened to receive the book. I think this was just a slip of the tongue - you use the terms correctly later on. Mastworks/Archive editions. These deserver special mention as a series of hardcovers in "standard" size, but intended as a series themselves. (as opposed to one-off trades or hardcovers). There are a few publishers that do this besides Marvel and DC - such as Tarzan. There are several "hardcover series" that are in different sizes: EC Reprints, Eerie, Creepy, Vamperella, etc. The page bunches you mention in the binding are called "leafs". Tip 2: Keeping track. Very good advice! I do use something called ComicBase - it's for very "heavy" collections (at least in my case! haha). However, it costs money. Tip 3: I agree. I still try to support my local comic shop though. Just because. However, you are 100% correct. I am a comic collector though - so I get my weekly books at there. I'm also starting to get more via mail-order. It's hard to resist 40% off. Comic shops do trade though - so you can get rid of books you no longer want. Good idea to check for defects! I've been thinking about getting some library plastic coverings for my books - this would protect the dust jacket. Haven't decided yet. Good for you on showing how to open a book! It seems strange - but it is critical to the health of the book. People need to open the books to get the binding working - so it doesn't "break" because it has never been opened. I've seen very old books that snap in half because they weren't properly opened. Nice video - I hope my comments don't come across as critical - I meant them just as more information/ideas/opinion. Thanks!

Yeah, it's funny because single issues and masterworks/archives are definitely what I collect the least of so that stuff must have slipped my mind. I am familiar with the different bag/board sizes, should have mentioned it! And I think I've only bought one masterwork and sold it after... Forgot that line is big to so many people. The dust jacket/slipcase must have been a mistake cause I most certainly know the difference between those two!

same, just started 1-2 months ago but i started with new 52 since that runs further into the rebirth. wich ones you like? the same as the movies u like or.....?? i got batman court of owls and like it :) also want to start with flash cause i realy like the flash tv show. arrow show also but i dont think i would like to read about an archer.... for the rest i kinda don't know what i would like, so much choice :p
@japman178 жыл бұрын
yea i hear thath alot about the new 52 batman run being AMAZING, its by scot snyder who now is doing the all-star batman so you're probably right that that one is the best batman from rebirth. thats why im gonna collect that new 52 run first before starting rebirth batman or all-star batman. im waiting to get into rebirth till i read some more new 52 stuff, its easier buying it in TB then single issues and the story from new 52 ( well most of it anyway) carries over into rebirth so... also being from europe and not america its very hard to find a comic book store here with, let alone single issues. so its mostly amazon for me. green arrow thath good? i heard the rebirth one's were some of the best rebirth comics but i can't see myself liking a comic about an archer(altough i like the tv show) but maybe ill give that one a try but only the rebirth one cause i read that new52 one sucks.. ive seen a preview of it and agreed the art looks GREAT been thinking about getting red hood and suicide squad since i realy love a good anti-hero :) the end justifies the means that kinda thing, not afraid to kill when nesccesary. wich one would u recommend to most out of those 2? i'm leaning more towards red hood since its bat family but maybe i should broaden my tastes a bit..? anyway THX ALOT for the info mate!! cause you're right its realy overwhelming getting started and finding out what u like and then there's the continuity..... pfff atleast with DC ist doable, if u start in new 52 u should have NO problem following but with marvel.... just orderd the mini series deadpool back in black, only 5 single issues.
@japman178 жыл бұрын
i'll definitly check out all star batman after i finish the new 52 run since you give it such high praise and also its from the same writer as the new 52 batman run and people say thats the most consistently good batman run ever so... THX ALOT for that site mate! its cheaper then amazon and only takes 4 days to ship to my country for free :) you never had any troubles with them?? good packaging?? otherwise im gonna try and order my next one there. yep arrow show went to hell after season 2! i do recommend watching the first 2 if you are a fan. the flash show is alot better ( depends what u like though) realy funny show with great characters and plot twists. try not to look up stuff about season 1 or u will be spoiled for sure. lol , that godawfull movie :D sadly enough i cant agree more with u about that one. i like it even less then thor 1, wich is my least favorite comic movie of all time, or was untill SS came along :p wich SS and red hood have u been reading? cause both of them get their first rebirth TB in march and since u said u also don't buy single's.... just to know wich one's youre talking about so i know wich one's to maybe buy, new 52 or rebirth. yep marvel is a big mess if you havent been following them for years now, they could do with a new 52 hard reboot. that's why i orderd the deadpool back in black mini series. its only 5 issues and not in the continuity. and also i loved that movie, my kind of dark humor :) so i thought it would be great as a first marvel purchase. and deadpool getting the venom symbiote could be realy brutal/funny. i guess that's the kind of anti hero im looking to find in redhood or SS. doesnt have to be exactly the same offcourse what did u think about that mercs with a mouth series? been looking a that as well to buy. just trying to find the deadpool wich is closest to the movie.
@japman178 жыл бұрын
sorry couldn't get this on my first reply, it was to long already but i wanted to show you this. i think you will like it. the art is WOW and story is stand alone so no marvel continuity hassle. its in my top 5 of marvel books to start with. im just gonna copy/past it below here here this is a one off book from marvel wich is great everybody tells me and the art looks AMAZING, just have a look inside the book on the site. ive been thinking about getting this as my first marvel since its a closed story also : www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0785142282/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2NQSMTN0N3YY4&coliid=I15FV5LEEYNLHJ

Great tips, though for Europeans it's way harder to be comic book collectors. For instance, there's no comic book stores in my country, of course, I can order books from UK, but shipping is often pricey ( and the books themselves are more expensive in Europe than in USA) and they don't ship hardcovers (which I love) at all, because most of them are too heavy.

+Nerdventures, A tip I recommend for you or the" need it now comic enthusiast" is to have a twitter account setup on a website called tweetdeck.twitter.com/ and customise a column specifically for your needs. For example you can add @CBR / @bgndotco / @InStockTrades / @stashmycomics or even comic artists like @JimLee That way you get super fast updates on what you want because it's your custom comic news feed. Once again this tip is only for the consumer that is news hungry for all the buzz or surfing the web 24/7 on comic book deals. Also if your not much of a reader but wish someone would actually talk about them then add @OfficialTCBS or @comicsexplained to your Twitter column. Great video by the way I subscribed.

Hi there. I've seen some forums discussing how to store the omnibus books. I've seen a lot of people suggesting to stack them horizontally (on top of each other) to prevent damage to the spines over time. Apparently gravity takes it's toll on the pages since they don't have support between them and the bottom of the hard cover (when stored vertically). As far as storing them vertically, like you have them, I've seen people suggesting to use little stacks of 3M Post-It Notes at the bottom of the pages to give them support. Seeing how my omnibus collection is growing I was wondering what you think about these ideas and maybe you would find this information helpful. Have you found any wear and tear from storing the books vertically? Thanks for the video!
@SequentialsDeluxe7 жыл бұрын
You know for myself I just don't care enough to bother with that level of care and upkeep. I know some people like to use clear protective dustjacket covers for storage and I've also heard of cutting small pieces of styrofoam to fit under the page block on the shelf. I personally haven't noticed any damage from vertical storage but with bigger books like sin city or colossal conan I'd assume it's possible. Let me know what you decide!

Greetings, I live in a country with high humidity, so my novel collections always turn yellow and get yellow spots, darn! For my comic collection, they are always well protected, acid-free boards and such, but I've found recently that even the Omnibus collections and various tradepaperbacks, even with their high quality paper, are starting to show spots and turn yellow. I can't vacuum seal everything, that will defeat the purpose of occasionally pulling a favourite comic out to read. Any suggestions on how to keep these?

I started to read comics and regularly buy TPBs of series I follow (mostly newer stuff like ongoing Image and DC series). I dont like single issues, so I thought TPBs make the most sense, since I'm not really collecting stuff. I just buy them to read them (I like to keep them, though ;)). Is there a huge potential to wait for complete editions to save money? What about finished series? Are complete paperbacks the way to go with little money at hand?

Recently picked up Batman's "Hush" Unwrapped deluxe ed., but it says 3rd printing? If the book and cover is the same as the 1st printing, how much does that matter?
@SequentialsDeluxe9 жыл бұрын
+Shawn A. It shouldn't matter at all. Most often things like that go through a number of printings with the same content. I feel like DC is a little better about keeping their deluxe books in print than Marvel is, so part of that is having multiple print runs on a title. The only time it has mattered before for collected editions is when an omnibus changes its binding from glued to sewn or something like that which makes some printings more desirable than others. But you should be good!

Also, I know I'm boring for this lol, but I'm only really interested in buying stuff based on movies etc, so for example the MCU. As a new collector I feel like there is just too much stuff out there to try collecting all kinds of things so need to limit myself.

Hi, great video! I read a lot of IDW comics. Do you know what their formats are and how they go about releasing singles, trades, omnibus, hc etc? Thanks, Jo

Having followed this for much longer than I have, I wonder what you think the chances are that DC will release a Harley Quinn Omnibus Vol. 4 that collects Issues #35-75? I figure #75 was only released this past August, so there might be hope. I posted a request for one on the DC Universe Collections Request forum thread, but I wonder if they even read those... What do you think?

My #1 Tip for omnibus collectors: Store your volumes flat, otherwise the binding can sag (if they're sewn) or completely fall a part (if they're glued).

bought the before watchmen volumes, and the last pages are kinda wrinkled, but not folded, kinda like water damage. any tips?

I'm new into collecting comics, and I would really want hardcover versions of it, but would that guarantee me a continuous release? Like Spider-Gwen, which I'm into, they have 2 TPB currently released and would have a 1st volume hardcover by February next year, so does that guarantee me to have a 2nd volume hardcover of it afterwards (since it did say Volume 1)? Or would I rather just collect the TPB? Great video btw!

RJ Gonzaga there's no guarantee when it comes to hardcover. Stuff is either confirmed or you have to go the trade route or play a waiting game for a possible HC. If a couple of years go by and no omnibus is released then it's highly unlikely that you'll be getting whatever follow up hardcover you are waiting for.

Hey man! I got a couple of questions regarding the Absolutes. How good is the binding on those books? Given the fact that they have the glued binding, do they stand the test of time? Absolutely love your collection and your channel. :)
@SequentialsDeluxe9 жыл бұрын
+SBR ComicBookReviews Actually the absolutes are sewn binding and much better than the usual DC fare. Most people don't love the DC omnibus line because the binding is either glued or a very tight sewn binding that doesn't open well. Absolutes are awesome and really well put together, just very pricey. So far all of mine have held up really well, the pages are easy to read, and the only think you have to worry about is the physical size of the book which can be a little uncomfortable to read depending on how you normally like to read your books. If you can stomach the cost it's definitely my preferred way to collect the stories.

+Nerdventures Thanks man! I was told they had glued binding. Resisted buying the Long Halloween Absolute, even when it was going for dirt cheap prices, just because I was skeptical about the binding. Should have pulled the trigger. But, never mind.. Another opportunity (read: online sale) shall present itself. :)

Yay! I finally understand what the heck an absolute is :D Quick question, are the marvel omnibus' behind you worth it? Is it a pain to read since they're so thick?

im new to collecting. My problem is that I actually love to read a lot of these stories, obviously. So I end up ordering multiple book from different runs, instead of just getting a whole run. Which makes it difficult. :(

hey great tips, question : what kind of binding has the Fear Agent Library Editions?? because i want to buy both of them
@SequentialsDeluxe9 жыл бұрын
+Live To Rock It's a really nice sewn binding like the other Dark Horse library editions. I'd try to scope out copies for around $25, I think that's the right price in the used market.
