Fun fact: Kuru Kuru Kururin, as the video showed, was developed by Eighting. Best known for the Bloody Roar franchise but also renowed for their shoot 'em up games, notably Battle Garegga. It was headed by Masahiro Yuge, who worked at Toaplan on shooters such as the legendary Truxton.

Sigma Star Saga mega fan here: Bandai Namco owns the rights to the franchise. Devs over at Wayforward have actually wanted to make a sequel/re-release the original for quite a while now (They've confirmed as much on Twitter), but their hands are tied on the matter unless BN decides to give them back one day. The game's ending (Whichever they decide to deem canon) deserves to be followed up on, cause the state of the universe afterwards would make for a compelling sequel. Thanks for covering it, Rebel! It needs all the love it can get!

So in the next one you’ll talk about Astro Boy: The Omega Factor, right? It’s filled with so much fan service for the larger Osamu Tezuka extended universe by making his “Star System” (his method of “recasting” the same character models in different “roles” like they were actors in film and television, this allowed him to save time making manga because he wouldn’t always have to come up with a new character design for each of the hundreds of manga and anime projects he made throughout his sadly cut-short by cancer life) a huge plot point and fetch quest in the second half of the game. It’s incredible they were able to make such a dedicated tribute to Tezuka’s many creations when most of his manga library wasn’t translated into English until long after this game and the 2003 anime revival of Astro Boy had concluded. And speaking of Treasure, this was console was pretty much their last hurrah when it came to side scrolling bullet-hell schmups, and Gunstar Super Heroes would also be a good GBA game to mention next time.

The thing to remember about Sigma Star Saga, apart from Psyme being best girl, is that Krill ships are bioships and, as such, are alive. Random encounters are literally a random ship in atmosphere on patrol getting scared by something moving and sucking up the nearest person wearing a parasite suit to blow up enough scary things until it calms down. I wish WayForward would revisit the universe, maybe with the random encounters toned down a smidge or reworked a bit, even if it means having to change the lore behind them.
@johnbuscher
@johnbuscher 2 жыл бұрын
Hooooly crap, that’s actually a funny bit of lore that explains why things are random. If Wayforward did another one, I’d ask for an SMT-style warning icon when a random battle is more likely (and can be excused as a ship getting suspicious of something) and offer the player some mechanic that can help reduce that suspicion level so that you aren’t pulled completely at random.

Despite its flaws, Sigma Star Saga is my favorite GBA game that no one's ever heard of. So nice to see it getting attention. Personally, I think the main reason it failed is just the "two great tastes...?" gameplay. The Venn Diagram of people who enjoy RPGs **and** Shmups is pretty slim.

Even though I didn’t grow up with a GBA, I feel oddly nostalgic for games on there like the Mario Advance series and the Sonic Advance trilogy. Maybe it had to do with the various fan works made in Adobe Flash like Super Mario Bros Z, Final Fantasy Sonic X, Sonic RPG, and Bowser’s Kingdom to name a few. Also I enjoyed my time playing the Super Mario Advance games on the Wii U Virtual Console. Also if/when you’re going to cover the Nintendo 3DS, I legit want to see you cover Blaster Master Zero. It is a fun revival and really should get more attention. It’s also from the people who did Mega Man Zero, Azure Striker Gunvolt, and Mega Man ZX. Also legit, it’s dumb that Nintendo hasn’t let Waluigi appear in WarioWare.

But over the summer, my friend David let me borrow his and I was definitely the envy of my brothers for a while. ...Maybe a little too much though, because my older brother wanted to play my Ruby version so much that when I told him no, he threw my old Red Version against the wall and it deleted my entire file with my level 80-90 pokemon. Kid Paddle's author (Midam) had even more success with the spinoff comic "Game Over", focusing on the barbarian vidya character and the horrible deaths he or the princess he tries to rescue meet. The comic was (and still is) published in several kid magazines. It's great and it shows that trash or gory humor still works with the young uns. While not yet a classic, it's broadly recognized in France.

I have a lot fun (and frustrating) memories of Sigma Star Saga. It's one of the rare times I took a blind chance on a game without a franchise backing it or word of mouth, and I ultimately wasn't disappointed. So many hours were spent figuring out how to get each ending, and hours wasted trying to figure out how to save your one Bro in the game only to learn it is impossible. Another nitpick I have to add is that you are locked out of getting the best ending on your first playthrough. You can save Psyme but the way to save the human chick only unlocks after you've already beaten the game once.

Since you mentioned WarioWare I was expecting Rythmn Tengoku to be mentioned as it's made by the same devs as WarioWare and not only is very colorful but it's also very wacky. Oh and it also spawned one of the best and under used Nintendo franchises ever

I recall a Game Boy Advance game called Lady Sia. It was released in the early 2000s by TDK and it looked weird but colorful. It was suppose to get a sequel years later, but the sequel was cancelled. If you look through Nintendo Power magazines during the GBA era, screenshots were shown on how it would have played.

I grew up on WarioWare, practically. Got hooked the moment I saw my cool developer cousin playing Twisted! and from that point on it became a core part of my youth. Not a day goes by where I don't sing Mona Pizza to myself or look back fondly on Smooth Moves. By the by, I find it crazy knowing the devs, Intelligent Systems, also developed another core part of my youth, Fire Emblem. Some things never lose their luster, I suppose!

I love Black Belt Challenge - you're super right; it succeeds so much because it plays to the limitations of the handheld -- but this is the first time I've seen the hidden fighters. Or that angry-eyes giant flower that Rana uses, for the matter. They all look hilarious; man this game rules. There's a lot of funny details and designs in that game I noticed before; makes me dig it even more now :D

The Wade Hixton art is kinda funny to me because the whole game resembles Kim Possible or Penny Arcade to me, and then there's the referee that looks like a Cow and Chicken character.

GBA library is HUGE, like you can easily find 50 game that would intertein you for a year. You have FF tactics, Golden Sun, Mario tennis (minigames where fun), yu-gi-ho and Duel master for card, Megaman Battle network with a fun combat system not turn base, The sims in GBA is an adventure game, very weird and sick! Very charming, you have Advance wars as the older brother to Fire emblem in GBA, there is a serie of pinball games for pokemon, quite fun, Broken Sword for those wanting a point and click adventure, Zelda, harvest moon. And this isnonly by the top of my head.
