When I was little yo kai watch was my all-time favorite game, but one thing that always freaked me out was terror time, which would happen either late at night or in the early morning. It starts when your character stops along with the music, and then a countdown from 3 appears. Then the character called Garagros appears and will start to hunt you down, and the only way to escape terror time is to find the exit and get there before Garagros catches you. If he catches you, then you're put into a fight against him. The music during this time didn't help either. Terror time still sends chills down my spine to this day just by the sheer nature of it and how it happens.

I wanted to forget about Dog's Life, but I guess I asked too much. My scary thing in non-horror game would be from the obscure 3D platformer Hugo and the Evil Mirror. The game's mirror levels have a very uneasy feel as they take place in a black void full of ghosts, living knights and flying books. Each mirror level ends with a boss fight against a creepy head of the main villain Scylla. There's even a level where her head chases you. If the boss fights against her weren't ridiculously easy it would be a lot more frightening but I remember not wanting to finish those levels because of how creepy the head was.

I saw another comment mention Yo-Kai Watch for Terror Time, which did scare me as a kid, but nowhere near what I consider to be the true scariest thing in the game: The Nocturne Hospital. During chapter 10, to advance the story, you need to investigate the abandoned hospital as a yo-kai named Draggie sensed something evil within. The place is in total ruin, implying it had been abandoned for a long time, but a mysterious doctor residing in it still insists on giving you a check-up. Eventually, he tells you to lay down on an operating table in the middle of a hallway. Once you do so, the table zooms down the hallway and into the previously locked operating room, after which the doors shut and lock behind you, separating your player character from their companion, Whisper. The doctor then takes on their true form, the boss of the chapter, Dr. Maddiman, a hulking frankenstein’s monster-like doctor that seems to be on some sort of life support, as well as having a hand wielding several scalpels like a claw. He then says he’s going to rip out the main character’s heart and immediately starts the boss fight without warning. Maddiman would return in subsequent entires of the series, and IMO he’s the best character in the whole thing, but that moment in the lead up to his bossfight, the mix of the operating room setting, the sudden nature, and the insinuation he was going to kill your character terrified me as a kid.

My suggestion is the dark cloud areas from Neopets: The Darkest Faerie. A very forgotten PS2 game, that was inspired by Zelda quite a bit. For the majority of the game it is light and cheery, but when the "dark clouds" envelop an area later in the game, the bright green zones become a dark purple, all the friendly NPCs are brainwashed and walk around in a daze, telling the player to go away, there are constant sounds of demons roaring in the background and the player is always attacked by flying enemies. As a kid I could absolutely never stand playing those levels and would always hand the controller to my older sibling. Probably wasn't that bad looking back at it, but way too spooky for a young kid to play

I remember always having to play the game with a friend when we had sleepovers when I was young, but we only ever really made progress when it was still daylight out, because neither of us wanted to traverse Neopia once it started getting purple and spooky...just getting through Bogshot Swamp alone was a hassle for the two of us!

I remember an old Lego browser game where you played as an RC car in a dark city tailing an agent or something. In retrospect, it was basically your typical 'follow an NPC' mission, but the atmosphere of it terrified me back then. Banger video as always. Also it's funny you bring up Ghost Girls in the Switch Pokemon, as in Sword/Shield there is actually a direct side quest that involves a ghost girl in the game. In the city Hammerlocke you come across a young girl who gives you an old letter, and asks you to bring it to her friend in Ballonlea to let him know she's okay. When you go deliver the letter though, you find out the friend is actually an old man, who reveals to you that the girl was actually someone he knew as a child who moved away due to an illness she suffered. To pretty much confirm what's implied, when you go back to the girl she thanks you for helping her by giving you a Reaper Cloth, an item pretty much exclusively used by the Ghost-type Duskull line. So yeah they're def still keeping up the Ghost girl appearances lol

The Endless Forest is a real niche pick, being an interactive screensaver/social MMO art piece originally made in collaboration with a museum to highlight some obscure European ruins, but its peak friendly/passive gaming, with only nonberbal, positive social interaction in the most serene forest that the 2000s internet can bring. But there have been multiple instances where loud, disruptive sounds, described like booms or gunshots, have sounded from the game. Pretty unsettling for something with whimsical Princess Mononoke-esque deer avatars. Kinda fun to me as its one of the few instances I can recall that's still largely down to rumors, the word of multiple users and the likes. But it was supposedly just some testing of the Abiogenesis system, (the holiday event system where the GMs make a gunch of effects go off in real time) and some people probably had their sounds too loud. I miss good ol game rumors...

Two personal recommendations of mine come from two obscure games that launched on Dreamcast and got ported to PS2. First up is Ecco Defender of the Future, which 75% of the game is unsettling but nothing hits as hard as the level Shrine of Controversey, which is one of the most depressing levels I've experienced in a game. The second is Fur Fighters, a game that employs cutesy Loony Tunes fun for almost the entire game except for one level: The Bad Place, which is an extreme shift in tone from the rest of the game. I recommend watching playthroughs of both levels before making videos talking about them, but yeah both are a real experience.

I can see Fur Fighters getting in, but Ecco was always creepy, I don't think that game was ever designed as a cute platform hiding horror but just straight up a horror game starring a dolphin. I remember in my favorite game ever Max Payne 2. When playing the level "Million Dollar Question" the one in the sky scraper. At one point just before you fight Kaufman, you must exit a window, use a window cleaner lift, and walk a ledge to another window, where scaffolding blocks the way. However if you go past the window, you can actually jump around the scaffolding, and continue on the ledge, around the corner is another window with a closed room, with a book on a pedestal, some curtains, and nothing more. The book had an image of someone, saying RIP, and a year. It's not exactly scary, but I've always found this unsettling, especially since I've never found any other Easter eggs in that game. I did have a theory when I was younger. Just before using the window lift, there are 2 enemies talking. They mention a friend who died while doing a sport like skiing, or Bungie jumping something like that. So I kinda wondered if that man in the book, may have died in that way? I don't hear this Easter egg mentioned very often, if at all.

That Skyward Sword one really reminded me of the Temple of the Ocean King from TLoZ Phantom Hourglass. The temple itself is already unnerving knowing you're on a time limit (at first it drains your life, then after you get the hourglass it takes time off from that, then drains your life), and also knowing the tense temple music the game has. And of course it's filled to the brim with Phantoms, enemies which, pretty much exactly like those enemies from SS, all chase after Link upon spotting him (with the music also changing to this hurried chase music, and the fog/smoke effect in the screen turning red), until you get to a safe zone or they lose you - if they catch you, you die if you have no hourglass time or start over from the last checkpoint/the start of the room (I don't remember which) with time taken away. Worst of all you have to repeat the dungeon many times throughout the game and the areas get tougher and tougher, first introducing faster Phantoms, then "Phantom Eyes" which alert all Phantoms of your position, then Phantoms that will teleport directly to you, and then Wizzrobes that stalk up to you in some later floors. Not to mention how much moving around the puzzles require to complete. When I was young I was scared shitless of them lmao, so much I had to get my brother to clear the sections that had them sometimes lol. (P.S. I also just got reminded of the Flooders from Splatoon, pretty much kind of the same thing, just probably not as creepy since they only appear in some levels for limited areas and if one spots you the others won't be notified. Also the atmosphere is not as tense)

I'm one of the few people that was never scared of Bearserk playing Pac-Man Party as a kid

Oh my gosh… BEARSERK. That just gave me a rush of nostalgia. I remember playing Pac-Man Party a decent amount as a kid and those bosses were something else. That bear and squid boss were so cool, I might have to revisit the game some day.

Something I've seen a bit creepy in a relatively modern game is from the game called "Dwarrows". The whole game is very friendly looking and sunny, until you reach "Virgil Pines". Upon entering that place, a fog starts coming out of nowhere and the sun is completely blocked. The trials in there are haunted (one of them have the ghosts of children manipulating the building while playfully laughing). But what really got me was the giant's skeleton lying in a whole area, surrounded by its ancient weapons. You can walk on it's ribs and spine, and the weapons are platforms that allow you to reach new areas, but the game never mentions anything about that giant, and you don't encounter a creature as big as that skeleton. That, and the lost family. That one was also very haunting, they kept repeating the last words they said in life and can't move on until you help them.

I’m not sure if this counts as super scary, but I always remember the fear of entering the Safir Cave area on Wii Fishing Resort. You could see giant Oarfish swimming around, and finally pulling one, or even a Goblin Shark, out of the water was terrifying as a kid

You want another game with some creepy bosses? I recommend Gex, Enter the Gecko. The main bad guy not only looks jarringly out-of-place and creepy, but his evil plan is to kidnap people and force them to be mascots on his crappy TV shows.

Rez! Such a goofy villain, yet his design freaked me out as a kid. Also, those little doll guys in the horror movie themed world who would come out of the dark swinging a knife at you.

A scary moment I remember as a kid was playing the Barnyard Game on the PS2. There's a night mission you can do to help out Freddy where you go into his dreams and stop evil versions of himself from trying to get Chickens, the song (Hostile) that plays always freaked me out (it also plays during the cow tipping defense mini game)

The quest to bring home an alien in Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts also has a moment where you need to travel underwater. During this phase, no music will play, adding to the strange ambience of driving around with a - potentially deadly - Alien.

Me and my siblings played Pac-Man party, and I specifically remembered that Teddy Bear the most, so seeing him here was certainly a welcome surprise, last I remember, the game was pretty fun, so I'd personally suggest it.

Brawl is so underrated. Subspace Emissary went insanely hard. Ultimate’s spirit whatever can’t even hold a candle to it.

The game over of Plants Vs. Zombies freaked me out when I was young. You just helplessly watch as the zombie enters your home, only for your character to scream as the zombie eats his brains.

The first fanfiction I ever read was a Dastardos origin fanfic where as Stardos he ran away from his father and siblings and was tricked by Professor Pester into eating sour candy and it corrupted him beyond recognition and made him betray his pinata raccoon best friend. I still think about that story to this day.

Growing up one of my family’s favorite games to play was Pac-Man party, it was only last year I found out that literally nobody knows about it and that it only sold 600k copies

Something that I remember from my childhood was the grim reaper in a jewel collection maze game called Crystal Maze. If you took too long to collect all of the jewels the grim reaper would start to chase you and he could float over platforms and nothing could stop him. Once he caught you the game was over. Very creepy for a game that came pre-installed in computers back in the day!!!

The reason Wario World's bosses and enemies are just downright nightmare fuel is cause of all the devs Nintendo decided to choose it was Treasure

In the 2003 game "The Haunted Mansion" on the PlayStation 2, there's a really unnerving spot. Granted it's a Disney -horror- game, but this spot is different from the rest of the game. In the maid's room, you have to find your way through a maze of moving walls basically. If you take a certain turn, you'll come across a little shrine thing in the floor. It's five candles in a circle with a Teddy bear in the center. No explanation, and the Teddy's gaze follows you. I'm pretty sure the Teddy is also in the children's room (where you first encounter the Reaper) - honestly the emptiness of this room is it's own thing all by itself. It might also have been in the toy room, but I'm not sure on that one. Regardless, the maid's room is the only one set up as a pentagram shrine, and there's never another mention of it in the entire game. You can't interact with it, it's just there. Creepy.

something that scared me as a kid was from mini ninjas, an E for everyone game with a boss called "boss windy pants" who fights you with farts but what actually scared me was the ghosts in the haunted forest level, creepy sounds, the fact that they're floating sleletons and you cant defeat them for a bit, you gotta go through them to get a spell to kill them. i still dont touch that level cause of how freaky those things are

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the track that plays in the silent realms when the guardians chase you, it is super intense and is mostly comprised of metallic clashing sounds which just amplified the intensity of the escape from these towering monsters that you just awoke.

the opening scene when you start a new game in the legend of zelda windwaker on gamecube always scared me. the music, vibes, and drawings would creep me out so much that i would make my mom watch it with me or be in the room while i played the game lol

Creepiest thing I seent as a kid was playing modern warfare on the 360 solo in the multiplayer maps to memorize them. I swear I keep seeing people duck around a corner, hide in windows, or run across a distant alleyway. Once playing 1v1 with my brother, we both saw a dude jump from a rooftop to a balcony that we didn’t know you could get on until we watched a literal ghost in the machine do it.

Here’s a thing that even creeps me out today, in the Wii game “samba de amigo” if you fail a level or start to fuck up your run, amigo(the monkey) starts making a really creepy face that still freaks me out as a 16 year old.

I think the Subspace Emissary from Smash entry was meant to be for Mizzo also, an unused enemy that is seen in-game at the near end of Meta Knight's Halberd level. With a Trophy included of what it is. It's actually kind of creepy to look at also

A game that would be be great to cover would be the Monster House game for Ps2. It was one of my favourites movies, but the game was actually scary as a kid. Inanimate objects coming to life like chairs, pipes and floorboards. The music and sound effects were unsettling. I remember the levels feeling really ominous as it felt like you were constantly being watched. This is also just a heavily underrated game which a lot of people didn't play.

A more recent one, the first phase of the final boss of Kirby and the Forgotten Land I forgot the name of it (It was Fecto something) but the big lion guy gets absorbed into it and there’s a giant chase sequence before the actual final battle. The phase itself is pretty creepy too. I’m sure watching a KZbin video of the battle would explain it better than I could
