The "unknowing" must be so very hard and upsetting for the family.

Derek's note left in his car doesn't seem cryptic to me at all. Perhaps because I've been deeply depressed, and in daily pain and insomnia for months at a time. To me he was clearly saying "it's check out time" and "don't waste time and resources trying to find a body you will probably never find".

yeah I don't see how it is seen as "cryptic" .. seems pretty straightforward to me. The only thing that would could seem off is how short it is and how he managed to succesfully have his remains to be unfound kind of hints to foul play to me. I feel like suicidal people leave a much more in depth note like I have done personally.

This is so sad I hope the truth comes out

Straightforward imo would be "I ended it all, don't waste resources" though I do believe the note itself isn't cryptic and it's very likely he took his life. @@JonathanGonzalez-Saenz

He witnessed something, I'm guessing, or something was done to him, that changed his world view. He saw someone die, be killed, or he was sexually assaulted, or was forced to watch something his mind couldn't cope with. Fearful someone would come after him or his family, he could have planned the whole thing to protect his family and himself, believing a fresh start was the answer. There are some gaps in information. For example, was it his writing? If so, were there signs of stress in his writing, or, conversely, NO signs of stress at all, like he was going to try to die and it was a relief. Were there other tire tracks or footprints? Did they try using tracking/cadaver dogs?

Booze and a Bible? Enough to mess with the most depressed of minds. Very sad.
