This is a brilliant story and a way of studying the curious bylines and byways of history overlooked-where reason and intuition combine. I find it fascinating on a personal note as it gives more evidence that the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in essence is cards (Tarot) and chess (Enochian Rosicrucian Chess) and so also is Lewis Carroll's Alice esoteric mathematical allegory- cards and chess. So, if Alice=Mary Heath=Meonia=order within and associated with HOGD as well as cousins Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (SRIA) and the Red Cross of Constantine (as posited in Seventh Sword- a fave of mine), then there is something going on with cards and chess as used in a divinatory fashion within esoteric circles and simply not some Golden Dawn invention of Westcott as some suggest. Order of Meonia as some obscure part of the wider milieu that the HOGD arose in along with others associated, perhaps it had something to do with cards and chess understood esoterically? If this is so, as a curious aside, or perhaps something more, the book Through the Looking Glass Darkly by Jake Fior- Main which explores Macgregor Mathers (founder of HOGD) and Dodgson in parallel and the story of Alice in the light of that and GD ritual and history, is something rather more concretely historical than Jake Fior-Main thinks as he doesn't really make any historical linkeages between Mathers and Carroll (but in Order of Meonia there is)! Can't wait to read your book Graham!! Have read Seventh Sword, the Green Stone, the Eye of Fire...anyhow thanks! Among my rather eclectic and diverse set of interests, which include not just chess, but also pulp fiction, comics, modern art and youth countercultures, mainly Mod and Hippy (and the rest) and eastern religions and Templars, the subject of the quest for Meonia always finds its way for periods of time once every year or two. 🙏❤💚💜🙏

Interesting you said "the Meonia Group" which is what the group that spoke to me called themselves. I think this is Order of Meonia's name in the world of Spirit.
