@crypticcorgi82804 жыл бұрын
Saying this as a Gypsy. Most Gypsies sadly do not. (Including the men.) It's a bit different here in The States and Canada. (Where we actually got opportunities.) But for most parts, no one is willing to hire Gyspies anyways. So parents feel it is counter productive to get schooling if it leads to no where. That it is better to have them get out there helping to survive. Sadly it keeps most European Gypsies in a self fulfilling cycle.

That's basically Gypsy culture for you. If you've ever seen more of the TLC show, a lot of the episodes center around getting the girls ready for their Sweet 16 so she can meet her future husband, drop out of school, get married, have babies, and be a permanent housewife. And all the suitors are the girl's male 20-something year old cousins, because "they have been approved by the Gypsy elders". IMO, the moms behave this way about arranged marriages like this because it's all they know. And a Gypsy woman isn't allowed to socialize with anyone outside of her immediate family under any circumstances to keep her "pure for her husband". However, once a Gypsy woman gets married, she can socialize with other married women within the family she married into. So in a way, that's the only support network Gypsy women are allowed to have. It's really depressing, knowing that this is still common practice in certain communities

A friend of mine is Romanian. She moved to the US at age 7. When she was 24 she went back to Romania to visit family. Her aunts locked her in a room with a random creepy guy and his dad. He brought a "watermelon of love" and was told that they would be married. Her aunts told her she should take what she gets because she is too old for a typical bride. She has not returned to Romania lol.
@MaliceinDix3 жыл бұрын
Is she Romani(gypsy)? Because regular Romanians are... nothing like that- coming from a Romanian who was born and raised there for 20+ years. Given how a lot of foreigners seem to make rather strange associations and assumptions, I sort of want to get this out of the way: gypsies/Romani are but a minority in our country, with their own identity and customs.

@natto-umeboshi-onigiri76034 жыл бұрын
That's simple psychology. When they would admit how messed up this way of living and pressuring kids into marriage is, they would also admit that their own path wasn't their choice, but merely brainwashing. So they have no other choice but to continue the tradition if they don't want to be thrown into a big crisis.
