Dr Brenner didn't die, he just got knocked down and trampled by The Demogorgon in the season 1 finale. We never saw him killed or his body, plus the guy Jane almost kills in 2x07 mentioned he was still alive. That was our first clue he wasn't dead, it was always the Duffer's plan to bring him back into the story.

He was still alive for the same reason Jonathan was in the ending of season 1. The demogorgon was distracted and attacked by others and got off of him

I think Maya Hawke looks like her dad when he was young from certain angles but you see her mom a lot. Partly because the hair texture and color...but her dad's dusty blonde is there as well. I keep going back and forth on it. Her mom's teeth. But I think it's her dad's facial feature.
