Whoever wrote his character really understands reactive attachment. It’s why he seems to both hate and care for Max simultaneously. He really does care for her, but he is also a victim of abuse. When he becomes close with someone, he pushes them away emotionally, and he has control issues.

Billy was a very well fleshed out character. I think the reason people were so sad that he died wasn't just because he sacrificed himself for max the. But when you see the little happy kid he was , losing his mother , because you kinda think something bad happened her? Then years of his dad being abusive to him. You look back over how he treats max and everyone else and just feel sad for him he could have been a totally different person if things had been different. But as great as a character is it made sense how he died and he got the anti hero redemption arc. I don't think Billy allowed himself to show emotions towards people he cared about, he didn't want to seem weak or have it used against him. That's why how he treats max is so conflicting. He cares but goes about it in the worst ways possible. But he obviously loved her enough to sacrifice himself to save her and tell her he was sorry. Its such a great show with great characters
@JazzyB94812 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's exactly why I was so sad about his death! It was the fact that he was once an innocent kid, but his experiences hardened him. One could argue that having a hard life doesn't excuse that type of behavior, but he really wasn't a bad guy after Max set him straight in season 2. He really just worked out, worked, and kept to himself after season 2, before the mind flayer got him. And in the Sauna scene he cries and apologizes to Max and says everything that's happening isn't his fault. He tries to protect Mrs. Wheeler by telling her to stay away from him after he's flayed, and even resists the urge to knock her out in that scene. And when the mind flayer is telling El that he's going to end everyone, you see Billy shed a single tear. I actually really grew to love his character after watching season 3 a few times.
@crimsonffire2 жыл бұрын
@@JazzyB9481 yeah I think as the audience , we got to see more to Billy than the average "bad guy character " because you get flash backs of him as a kid and El used this and the love he had for his mother to break the smell the mind flare had over him. They have to be some of the best thought out characters I have seen in a show and as you pointed out each season you grow to like and care for these characters ,they are so reliable in so many ways. I know I was kinda rooting for him to live . But he redeemed himself and it was max he wanted to know most that this wasn't him. Was so gut retching to see him open up and say it wasn't him and apologise before the flare took him back over and escaped. The also choose great actors for their roles . Guy who played Billy was great. Going to be a mixed bag for season 5 but all great things must eventually come to an end.

Racism CAN be incidental. It's entirely possible for Billy to not have cared about Lucas and never showed a single racist bone at him--if not for his interaction with Max. Billy does show interest with Max, but it's clear it starts as a sort of control, not anything positive. So take this, and add a black boy getting a crush on Max, and it's a perfect storm for targeting Lucas. I seriously don't get the 'he never showed interest in her' from you. It's clear he thrived over controlling her--because he'd get his ass kicked if he didn't keep her firmly under his thumb.

Developing a friendship between him, Steve and Eddie (maybe even Nancy?) A nice tearful interaction between him and Max where we can have him apologize to her. Fight scenes like maybe him vs Jason or an old Demogorgon in the upside down. An inner conflict between him and Vecna or the Mind Flayer. An interaction between him and Will (since they were both possessed by the Mind Flayer. An interaction or bond between him and Joyce. Closure between him and Lucas. Getting to beat the crap out of his father. I think they should kept billy alive because you could do so much with his character and he would be a good add to the group due to his strength. He could grow a bond with max, understand 11 and will because of the mindflayer, he would be a good help fighting whatever they fight, could apologise to Lucas and so much more.

Even though it is possible that he may have been a bit racist bc of his dad and the times back then, I don't think that's what initially made Lucas a target of Billy's... Many people have pointed out that this happened after Billy saw Max was upset because of Lucas and after that he hated him. Maybe something about it reminded him of his childhood seeing his parents fight and even though he didn't show it very well, he did care for Max and didn't want her to end up like his mother... but that's just a theory!!! ❤️

On an in cannon technicality, people occupied by the mind-flayer are people with another personality in their mind. Which is very similar to DID. Real DID is usually developed before the age of 8 though as once a mind is fused into a single identity, it has a very hard time splitting again. A DID mind splits and/or doesn't fuse under one identity thus it's easy for the mind to split and fuse identities into adulthood.

I heard when you reference to Billy Nolan from Carrie bc of the Stephen King influences but I think it's also interesting that they made his last name Hargroves, could that be play on Hargensen as in Chris Hargensen, also a human villain from Carrie? Also the name Chris as in Chrissy from season 4? Just a loose thought there I guess.

It makes me sad because he was abused like the most part of his life, he never could do something for him because he was serving his dad. Everyone comes first in his “family”, he was serving his sister too, looking after her all the time. Then he was tormented and abused from a kind of monster. He probably felt weak and vulnerable, powerless and scared all the time, that’s why he tried to protect the most he could his sister (and he was right btw because now she is fighting monster and could be killed any time like we saw in s4) and he died trying to protect her. He was a martir tbh he was angry, yes, but he was only 17-18 years old, he could be saved. Also he was not an asshole to everyone, he was an asshole to people who made him feel treated.

What you seemed to overlook right away is when billys dad said, "You went to see him again, didn't you?" Which implies she probably cheated on billys father, and even though he accepted it and stayed with her, he never forgave her, and thay resentment and anger grew increasingly and all directly towards billy after her passing.

I just realized why he protects Max so fiercely, and it's because his Dad told him that is his responsibility that night she snuck out. So he harbors this anger the entire show towards her. I'm sure other people saw that, but I just realized lol

I feel like Eduardo from Eddsworld and Billy share one thing in common, their love for attention. Remember that flashback in PowerEdd? Eduardo, as a child has seen by the other kids for being in second place on show and tell. That would ignite his rage to get revenge at Edd and finally give him what he need: first place. That's the same rage the Hargrove had when he heard about Steve being a super popular kid in high school, thus creating a rivalry that is similar to Edd and Eduardo in PowerEdd. Billy also 3 "well"s just like Eduardo when we meet for the first time in Hammer and Fail Part 1. So, an Stranger Things and Eddsworld crossover may be possible, but again ST is show for a company, while EW is made by the legendary Edd Gould. Maybe they'll do it for him? Who knows!

Even though Billy was an unpredictable and abusive person, he did have a tragic backstory which caused him to turn out that way. Some bullies are made from a history of being abused and scolded, despite there being no justification for such behaviour they usually take the heat out on others to cope with the abuse they deal with. Had he been in the custody of his birth mum instead of his dad when they divorced, he would’ve been a completely different person. Despite his major flaws, he actually did have a good side inside of him when he saves Eleven from the spider monster by sacrificing himself at the end of Season 3. Even though he was also abusive towards Max and she fantasised about him dying as revealed in Season 4, she did feel grief when she literally saw him die right in front of her. She truly did love her stepbrother and wished he could become better, and her thoughts about him weren’t genuine. I also know to many people Angela was a despised character as she bullied Eleven, but we could consider that maybe she had a similar past as Billy which caused her to turn that way as well.
