I think that Eddie didn't have to die, I mean he could've kept running instead of fighting back against the army of the bats, it would also have kept those bats busy and bought steve nancy robin more time. Nonetheless, he could have simply jumped to his dimension after Dustin when they were in his RV, the bats were already distracted that time and by the time the bats returned to steve nancy robin, the trio would have already entered Vecna's house and would already be held captive by the hives. So the bats would be useless anyway.

I personally think that Eleven gets her powers back through Project Nina and during this time Vecna attacks one of the lead characters (Steve, Dustin, Lucas, Max, Robin, Nancy, and Eddie) and right then Eleven steps into the game saves the lead character and then fights Vecna, the fight then exaggerates into the Upside Down where Eleven beats Vecna but can't get out of the Upside Down and essentially is trapped in Upside Down.
