Gabe: First of all I am a long time viewer who enjoys your videos and reviews. Having said that, I am completely mystified how you haven't figured out that Mizuno is not marketing this club for golfers like you. They are marketing this club at me: a 70 year old golfer who can not generate the club head speed to get a loft jacked modern iron in the air with enough spin to keep it in the air and hit it high enough to have a reasonable descent angle to hold a green. For low swing speed players like myself, we don't care if we can work it both ways, or high and low. We want to get the damn ball in the air, reasonably straight and have a chance at holding a green. You may not like this iron now, but in 30 years if you still are able to play, you will have a much different opinion of it. Just like you wouldn't get anywhere near a 12 degree driver head, or a 9 wood, the staple for most golfers like me to enjoy the game.

Interesting, maybe a mixed set… that is why they make different models. Enjoy the reviews, but this is what he does, reviews just about everything.. at least we get different perspectives. Most of us don’t have time to try multiple sets or trade /buy new clubs each month /year. Even fittings can become headache inducting depending on fitter and club bias and availability. Oh by the way he designed a putter…big surprise.. Maybe another channel will review the reviewer???

I’ve played game improvement clubs for 15 years and I’ve never seen one I couldn’t fade or draw a little or a lot, sometimes more than I wanted. I was fitted last year and play the 923 HM HL’s and they are the most accurate and forgiving gi clubs I’ve ever played. My swing speed is 73 to 75 mph and that doesn’t work with loft jacked irons hence the 923 HM HL’s
@william_hartman4 ай бұрын
IMO anyone of any swing speed who is looking for a game improvement iron should be looking at the Hot Metal HL over the standard Hot Metal. At 90+ MPH especially because the distance on the standard HM is just too far, you would be at or near 200 yards with the 7 iron which leaves massive gaps in the bottom of the bag and tighter gaps at 200+ yards where you don't need it. Zero people need a 7 iron less than 30 degrees. I was fitted for the 923 Hot Metal Pros with Project X LZ 6.5 and they were amazing in terms of forgiveness. However I had massive gaps at the bottom of the bag, my 7 iron was 195 yards, 8 iron was 175y, 9i 155y, PW 130y, and then the JPX 923 cross cut grooves GW was 112y. At the other end 6i was 205y, 5i 215y, and 4i 220y. I took them into Golf Galaxy to get them bent 2* weak to see if that would help, but because they are cast and not forged they couldn't bend them more than 0.5*. I bought a used set of 5i-PW, GW Mizuno Pro 245, swapped my shafts into them, and then went to GG and got them successfully bent 2*. Now I have a 32* 7i that is 180 yards and isn't noticeably less forgiving then the HMP. Plus it looks and feels way better!

props on the speed you are getting. I feel like the last couple of years your driver wasn't much quicker than that 5i. Well done !!

Great review . As an older injured golfer the high launch I think is a great help . When irons got loft jacked I couldn’t hold tucked pins . Either spin or landing angle are your friend .
@petegalindez99614 ай бұрын
I think many people mis-understand the purpose of the HL irons…I recall when the 923 HL came out, the PR put out by Mizuno stressed that they were created for that person who just doesn’t swing it as fast anymore and needs help getting the ball up in the air due to that loss of speed…so, when people who swing at the speeds that you and I swing at, or faster, they aren’t really geared for that swing speed category, so the results aren’t great….but, take a person who swings a 7 iron at 60 mph and have them test all three 925s and there should be a much bigger distinction…
@erock10704 ай бұрын
I swing my 7i around 70 mph and carry it 140, I also like to draw the ball and usually produce too little spin and descent angle. These "HL" irons, like these and the Smoke HL have been really good for me. I will be preordering these 925 HLs
@LetsPlayThru4 ай бұрын
Glad to hear they are working. Before you do, give the pro model a try and you might be surprised - IMO they’re just as easy to get in the air and longer & straighter.
@erock10704 ай бұрын
@@LetsPlayThru I will try them...but usually like a little bigger profile than the Pro. I play to around a 7-8 cap but swing slower and iron play is my worst part of my game. I sweep the ball and need all of the launch I can get. I start at a 6i and usually anything under 27* simply doesn't work for me.
@glenburr67554 ай бұрын
@@LetsPlayThruthese HL models are not made for your swing speed. I know it’s been mentioned in the comments all over the place here. I just got fitted for irons a couple weeks ago. I’m 62, 7 iron swing speed is 77 mph. 3 handicap. I have a set of Callaway Rogue ST Pro irons, 30.5* 7 iron. The spin and land angle are not good with irons with that low loft, for my swing speed. Land angle was around 41*. Can’t hold greens at my course in the summer in New England. 28* 7 irons are a definite no go.

The trouble with the 225 hollow body clubs is they can be a bit variable off of the face, hard to play when you get a distance that varies to much. The 925 HL's are the most forgiving of the range, but they aren't miracle workers, if you hit a really bad shot they can't cast a spell to bring it back. Maybe the JPX 925 Forged will suit you when they come out in the new year.
@StevenDietrich-k2w4 ай бұрын
Gabe, don't you think forgiveness and workability are almost opposites? Something that is easy to curve both ways is going to be less forgiving, and clubs that allow you to hit it all over the face and still get a decent result is going to be harder to intentionally curve. I can't think of a club that is going to be great at both. These HL irons are made for a specific market, and not the average guy. They are made for the guy that can't get the ball up in the air, and can't hold greens. That's not you, but that is a lot of senior golfers.
@LetsPlayThru4 ай бұрын
Yes I was surprised at the lack of forgiveness and increased workability of these. Just think the Pro models are really good all-arounders and no need for these, but I’m open to being wrong.

@@LetsPlayThru Based on what I recall of the 923 models, the HL didn't look as good. The head looked shorter and the sole looked wider. Wide enough that more of the sole flange was visible at address. I assume these look just as bad.

As a club fitter, these look like a very niche market... as a Golf pro. It looks like a great club for a lot of people with that height… I would be curious to check the overall weight and swing weight of those clubs as it looked like you were trying to find the clubhead today. Swing weight is a vastly underrated metric. When trying golf clubs, swing weight is a vastly underrated metric. I see the same reviews over and over ..decent to good even great golfers hitting super game improvement irons over and over out of the middle going high and far and the deviation across manufacturers in minimal . I personally wanna see how that new tech reacts on toe strikes heel Strikes . Vs dead middle ones then compare that across makes . Does it help? Is this possible ? Do u need a robot ? @WilliamHay-d3l4 ай бұрын
The HL clubs id say would make anyones game better no matter what your swing speed because there all traditional loft specs and not jacked up like most irons now with companies obsessed with distance. Ever wonder why you cant hit your new 7 iron , its because its really a 5 iron. No point hitting a 7 iron 200 yards which cant hold a green . Also with stronger lofted clubs theres big gaping issues and youll probably need 3 wedges. As i say its all marketing, longer, straighter what else can they say but this.
