On May 26, 2018 the Strasburg Rail Road, in conjunction with Lerro Photography, held a photo charter inspired by the trains of the United States Army Corps. Canadian National 89 was repainted into a new livery to represent a locomotive that could have served the Transportation Corps. The charter would be appropriately named "The Red Ball Express", which was a constantly seen train operated by the allies during WWII. The motive behind this unique event was the fire that devastated a barn from Verdant View Farm in April. As many know, the Strasburg Rail Road is neighbor of the farm and all proceeds from the participants would go directly into the effort to build a new barn. While there never would have been a Canadian 2-6-0 operated under the U.S. army like seen in this charter, 89 still carried out a great show and display of scenes commonly seen during wartime. There was also the 45 minute mixed freights that ran earlier in the day with 89 in addition to the regular excursion trains pulled by 90. Please enjoy a freight charter on the road to paradise!
