One of my first Gibsons was a '74 335. It's a deep cherry basically a ruby color. Still have it. Years later I picked up a 2006 335 that became one of my main gigging guitars for 6-7 years, maybe longer. I'll never sell 'em. My kids can deal with it once I'm dead!! HA HA! That won't be too much longer as I'm 73. I have always felt the 335/345/355 style instruments are just great instruments. Cheers!

The reason for the superiority of an es 335 for example is, that they got greater sustain and decay smoothness, more attac, better sound, better feel, to mwke it short, they are the stradivaries in guitars. I was 15 when i got my first 335 , its still my number 1, playing it frofessionally for 45 years. Even compared to L 5, Super 400 and others, i still come back to my 335, no matter if i play swing, funk, soul , rock or country!

You missed a couple of great sleeper ES guitars. I have an absolute mint ES 340 and ES 325. Both are super cool. The 340 is a 72 Blonde with Gibson embossed pickup covers on the patent sticker pickups. It has a 5 piece maple, walnut strip, maple, walnut strip, maple neck. Very much like what was on their higher end archtop guitars at the time. Very stable. It has a funky master volume, Tone controls and blend circuit in it. I removed mine original wiring harness (Saved it intact of course) and installed regular 335 wiring harness. It sounds every bit as good or better than my 67 335 and looks so good in Blonde. Gibson did not make a Blonde 335 in the late 60s or early 70s. I also have a dark cherry ES 325 that is a 1976 model. It is has a full block running from neck to heel, has the drop in wiring harness and plate like an SG Pro from the era and firebird pickups (not mini hum buckers). It also has a unique and great sound. Plays fantastic. One thing I found interesting on both of these is that even on the 76 ES 325, it has a real ABR-1 bridge when Gibson had already switched to the newer "Nashville" bridge. Maybe Gibson was just using up old parts. They both sound great and I like them as well as my 67 ES 335.

Between 1991 and 2004, Gibson made the trapeze tailpiece ES-135 with 2 P-100 pickups and a Florentine cut-away. Between 2002-2013, Gibson made the ES-137 with 2 humbuckers, a stop tailpiece and and a Florentine cut-away. In 2003 when production of the ES-135 was ending, Gibson apparently had some extra necks stamped ES-135, and put them on ES-137 bodies, creating a stop tailpiece ES-135. I have one of these I bought in 2004 and love it except for it's weight (9+ lbs). One would think that this rare version would be worth something as a collectors item, but alas, they usually go for less than $2000 on Reverb.

28:09 ES-5 Switchmaster has 3 pickups and Vol & Tone knobs for each pickup, and a FOUR way switch, not a 5 way like a Str@t. The switch selects each pickup individually or all three together. It’s an incredibly versatile setup, but takes up a lot of room hence it wasn’t employed on the contemporary 3 pickup LP Custom. One can’t help but think that Gibsons 3 pickup guitars from this era were at least inspired by the Str@t, if not an attempt to compete with F3nder.

No, the ES-175 is out of production. As mentioned, this video is part history lesson and part buyer's guide. The earlier models like the ES-175 is the history lesson part. But, as Justin explains at the end, there's no telling what Gibson might come out with down the line. They've been known to reintroduce long-obsolete models for a special run.

Interesting topic and video. I bought neither... I have an amazing playing and sounding Korean made Gretch Electromatic and bought an equally, if not better quality, Indonesian made D'Angelico Deluxe that I intended for my daughter at the time of purchase... hoping she'd follow in my footsteps when she was ready, and she is now learning to play it... and sing... something I wish I could do as well as her! I have no personal reasons to dislike either Gibson or Epiphone, though I can't completely agree that all those Chibsons are bad. Clearly, a hand-made replica or "inspired by" copy made by an artisan is on a completely different level, like the LP "copy" Slash used because he couldn't find a reasonably priced "good" Gibson when they were failing to produce quality instruments in the latter 80s and 90s. But now the tables are turned and those hot guitar companies like Kramer, Charvel and Epiphone are being gobbled up by the bigger companies, like Gibson and FMIC. For the most part, I agree with you... I'd rather buy a cheaper, dealer supported brand like Epiphone, Gibson, D'Angelico, or even a Harley Benton, over a "Chibson" guitar... unless I found a real gem amongst the stones... and the fact is, there are some of those out there, too! Will they hold value like a Fender Strat or Gibson LP... only if they're not crap... and these days, the word gets out pretty quick! I never buy based 100% on a brand name, but where it's made matters to me... as does the quality of its parts! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! 😎🎸🤘🎹🎶🎵

Gibson & Epiphone also had at one point an ES-125 TDC, anyone familiar with George Thorogood knows that was what he made his living with, his iconic White Fang. He's gone so far as to say there would be no GT & Delaware Destroyers without that model. I think he might be right in his mind, I think he might've found another ES model to produce his music collection with. But let's face it, anyone hears GT & DD, the visual in their head is the ES-125 TDC White Fang. Just as Billy Duffy's Sanctuary Sound & guitar is the Gretsch White Falcon as iconic.

That said, Charlie Christian was definitely the 1st Electric guitar hero.

39:45: “Which one do YOU prefer, is the question.” No. The question is “Which one can you AFFORD.” The difference in price between these 2 guitars is what? $6,000? $8,000? More? The price of each is not a “preconception.”
@longandmcquade2 күн бұрын
Keep listening to what he's saying. At 39:59. What he means is you might be able to afford a $10,000 guitar, but you don't necessarily need to pick the most expensive guitar that matches what's available in your savings account. You might think you need to spend all of your $10k budget on a guitar that you will like, but then when you go to the store to try it out, it doesn't speak to you. You might prefer the sound in your ears and the feel in your hands of a less expensive guitar, like the Epiphone version he is comparing it to. The preconception that he's recommending people get beyond is aligning price and country of origin with a well-made guitar that you might want. Don't think that you must spend $10k+ to get a quality Made in USA instrument that you'll get along with, enjoy playing, be inspired by, and make music with.
@davidgunther1282Күн бұрын
@ yes, I heard that too, but I still stand by my statement as more realistic to the average consumer/KZbin viewer than his. It would be lovely for everyone watching to have the means to walk into their local music store and shop according to what the prefer from an audio perspective instead of from a financial one. I understand what he’s saying and the possibility that one may actually prefer the less expensive model, but again, I think the vast majority of viewers don’t have the luxury of making that choice.

Better that you totally get around the Gibson/Epiphone game and find an Eastman dealer. Play a T-184, T-185 (my fave) or T-186. These are solid wood guitars with ebony boards and ebony appointments that absolutely SHAME Gibson guitars in every way for far less money. No, I'm not an employee or 'representative,' but I've owned three Eastman guitars. Any one of them kicks Gibson's ass up and down the block and back, and for far fewer Sheckles. They're made in China, largely by Chinese women, and they give Bob Benedetto a really hard run for his money. I'm sure he's wondering how they do it.

We didn't forget, we just couldn't include every model. We also didn't include the ES-165, or the 295, or the 336... As Justin explains in the beginning, there are lots of different model numbers, but the differences between each of them are pretty minor. The 333 for instance is basically a budget model 335 with a satin finish, a different headstock and different pickups that was only in production for 3 years out of Gibson's entire history, so it was pretty short-lived. It mostly gained popularity due to Tom Delonge, and you can see we have his ES-333 signature model pictured at 10:18.
