Strategic Command: World War I - A First Look - Part 1

In today's video I play Fury Software's newest game, the newest in their Strategic Command series, Strategic Command: World War I. This grand strategy game will put you in the shoes of either the Entente Powers or the Central Powers as you attempt to fight and win World War I in the time honored, Strategic Command System. In today's video I muse about the announcement and what they need to do to get it right.

This has always been my grand strategy as playing Central powers in other games. Forget the Schliefen Plan and not invade Belgium, build an impregnable defence along the French border and go after Russia an Serbia with overwhelming force. Won every time with this and you will too.

This would not have worked, unless the German strategy was also to ask for peace with England and France. I think then it would be good. The British wouldn't fight over some Serbians who killed an Austrian archduke.

Concerning the British delivering the battleship, it's likely because they're not at war yet. No reason to hold it back, since they're still neutrals.

I believe it’s a yes and no decision that the entente gets because another KZbinr I was watching also didn’t declare war on Belgium but the battleship was still not delivered to the ottomans. It just so happens that the historicalgamer was luckily enough that the entente decided to give the ottomans that battleship. Although I’m sure If the British are at war it increases the chance they just keep the battleship

In reality, the Royal Navy taking over the ships was a provision in the contract with Turkey. However, the British seized the ships *before* British entry into the war, which was illegal and enraged the Turks. The Turkish officer in charge of the crews (who were already in England to take possession of the ships) even threatened to board and take them by force. In all, this action by the British generated considerable animosity towards the British not only within the Turkish government but also the general population, who had contributed towards the purchase of the ships voluntarily.

Just found this video and am loving it. You have a really great channel with lots of good stuff. I'm a WWI buff and just read an excellent one book history on the war called The World Undone by G.J. Meyer, if you are interested in the war you may want to check it out, I found it extremely well written.I have to admit I found your opening moves a bit odd, especially not going through Belgium and trying to get around the French flank. Historically, the Germans pulled a lot of their troops out of the Shlieffen Plan to fight the Russians and thus there initial attacks didn't carry enough weight to get to Paris. I am curious to see how your plan goes! I'm going to work my way through this series and see how you do. Thanks for making this series.

Thanks for this play through- played the old version on steam in the last two years. So happy you didn’t Schlieffen. I’ve always thought this was the main mistake of Germany. Although I’m not sure about Riga so early. I would focus on propping up the Hapburgs in Serbia and Galicia to start.

I think if the Schlieffen Plan was not executed, the Germans would not able to advance into France, they would need a huge force on the East. On the Eastern Front, either they advance, which may results in insufficient supply and reinforcements similar to what happened to Napoleon's army; or they hold the line, which will let the Russians have time to transfer more troops to the German border, the Germans wouldn't able to hold two fronts of such strong armies. Maybe your point is the Plan brought Britain to war, but the Britain was originally in the Triple Entente since 1907, so Britain is an ally of Russia and France; also after the German Unification, Germany became a very strong nation, it controls large land and have a strong military, its navy was also the world's second largest, challenge British which was the first at that time, so I think Britain joining the war is just a matter of time, not caused by Schlieffen Plan.

Personally I think that naval power was the fundamental Allied - specifically, British - trump card which led to eventual "victory" (if 1918 could be called that). I'll be interested to see how this game handles that aspect of the conflict; if there's a reasonable strategy for the CP to meaningfully break or neutralize the blockade.

I appreciate your discussing your opening move strategy. The East was always very mobile and the west was initially in the first few months of the war. So the game being a slog initially is not accurate.

I mean he also talks about the austro-hungarian Army being weak which wasn't accurate the issue was it was ineffective it was actually one of the largest armies in the war with one of the largest industrial bases in Europe at the time backing it up.

Historically, Germany, the Austro - Hungarian Empire and Italy were the Central Powers, however, due to Territory Problems between Italy and the Austro - Hungarian Empire, Italy joined the Entente.

How are peace treaties calculated in this game? If you take over Russia how do you’d excise who gets what or is it first to capture keeps it?

Conrad von Hotzendorf was not 'Chancellor' but the Chief of Staff of the Austro-Hungarian Army (and a complete idiot). Arguably Hannibal did so well at Cannae because of Roman co-operation. The French were so obsessed with the idea of attacking they didn't think the Germans would use reservist units in the front line - hence the appalling losses in the Battle of the Frontiers.

Because I prefer to control the initiative and they really do for the first year of the war or so. Plus a few other KZbinrs like Tortuga Power and Richard Yorke did some Entente LPs already.

@@thehistoricalgamer Yes, it is much like how your Allied Strategic Command playthrough was slow and defensive at the beginning. It is much more engaging as the Axis.

how do you undo moves? I keep thinking it's going to be right click to move, and accidentally moving guys when I mean to just deselect them. The game start menu has an option for "undo moves", but I am damned if I can find a button to do so. Gotta say, I am kinda dissapointed at how simple this game is while still being INCREDBILY inaccessible. I get why it's tough to get into rule the waves. because designing ships is complicated. But the amount of nonintuitive stuff you have to learn to bash generic infantry units into each other seems kinda steep. The instruction manual for this game is BARELY under THREE HUNDRED PAGES, and that is just the base manual, not the nation specific strategy guides.

You can only undo a move if you don't reveal any enemy units via fog of war reveals, and if you haven't de-selected the unit you just moved.
