NEW DELHI: As U.S. troops pull out of Afghanistan, bringing an end to a 20-year war they initiated, it reminds one about a similar American misadventure in Southeast Asia more than four decades ago. In both instances, the world’s most powerful army was pitted against smaller adversaries, yet was handed down humiliating defeats. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale looks back at what remains the most embarrassing chapter in American military history-The Vietnam War.

Ajit Doval became comfortable after getting his cabinet rank. He's become an absolute liability to Indians, or even sold out to foreign interests perhaps. We have no idea what he did in his apparent field years as a spy inside Pakistan. No results for India. Before jumping on me, read the story about Eli Cohen, who infiltrated Syria and became the Defence Minister of Syria. It was due to him that Israel was able to capture the Golan heights and secure water supply.

No one has ever defeated guerrilla forces. Had Indians resorted to guerrilla warfare they would have gained independence from Britain hundred or more years earlier. Gandhi taught us the wrong lessons on non violence. He delayed India’s independence .

US army or any nation's army are trained to fight a conventional force but guerilla warfare is different and element of stealth gets into it which surprises a modern hi tech force. Vietnam's tropical jungles and Afghanistan's rough mountains with harsh weather played a major role. Even LTTE was so successful in the early 90's as a guerilla unit, the moment huge Tamil diaspora money poured in leading to formation of LTTE navy, airforce and army is when they lost against SL govt force.

Sir. Agree with the Vietnam story, however same cannot be compared with the Afghan war. In altogether a hostile country full of guerilla warriors, American soideirs fought almost for two decades. These guerilla fighters had an experience of 20-25 years and hence it wasn't easy to defeat them..Americans reduced them to tiny, most of the Talibans had to take shelter in neighbouring Pakistan. The new Afghan govt was established. Top Taliban and Al Qaeeda leaders were eliminated..What more a foreign country would have done? and in these two decades of war less than 3000 americans were killed... Though every life is precious, however the mortality rate of Americans was very low. It is the Afghan govt who is to be blamed..inspite of having large number of army, sophisticated new age weapons, air power they are retreating. Its there own country which they have to save..

They couldn't have defeated the most powerful army without the help of Pakistan's ISI -“it will be stated that the I.S.I. defeated the Soviet Union in Afghanistan with the help of America.” “Then there will be another sentence, that the I.S.I., with the help of America, defeated America.” Gen. Hamid Gull - Head of ISI in 1980s - Pakistan's ISI effectively ended Indian game in Afghanistan making the Afghanistan Pakistan's 6th Province - Long Live Pakistan and Long Live Pakistan's Military

Well all wars in present world will be unsuccessful till they choose to follow this quote by Cato the elder "Ceterum autem censeo carthaginem esse delendam". But modern socitey will not accept notions like that thus true victory in war can't be gained .

You label Talibans as "Islamic fighters" ! What do you mean by "Islamic". Don't you know that Afghans are all Muslims. They follow the islamic faith and so all Afghans fighters are "Islamic".Should one call Indian Army as "Hindu fighters"?, American soldiers as "Christian fighters"? I am astonished at the ignorance of Indian media and the religious bias they bring into their discussion, specially about Islam. They never talk of other religions. And this is where India's problem is and will be in the future. ie. Indian Hindus hatred for the religion of Islam. Eventually all Muslims of the world, specially rich Arab countries who give jobs to millions of Hindus from India will catch on to the Hatred and bigotry of the Indian Hindus against their faith Islam.
