It’s one of the glorious chapters in India’s military history. Five years after suffering a defeat at the hands of China, India hit back hard at the border pass of Nathu La in 1967. It’s a story of courage and determination and what a determined leadership can do. In many ways, it laid the ground for India’s victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan that led to the liberation of Bangladesh. In this episode of ‘Simply Nitin’, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale narrates what led to the Nathu La clash and how it all panned out.

Very good of you sir to say that we share border with tibet and not china... We need to get our mainstream media to acknowledge the same... Along with getting out of the mindset that they keep repeating as if feeling inferior that india is not the same as 1962 trying to more remind themselves rather than china

An excellent narration Nitin, a short yet filled with enough details to understand what happened in 1967 with China and which lead to 1971 win against Pakistan to set a history which we can be proud off in the coming generations

This needs to be more widely discussed and assessed at an International level. I often see 1962 as being the defining moment of positioning China being militarily superior to India in various foreign media outlets, but 1967 at Nathu La is never acknowledged in the International media. I think there is no stigma vis-a-vis China from 1962 anymore, there shouldn't be - because of 1967, India's beaten them once, it's just historical fact. From where I'm standing, India and China have a score of 1-1. Chinese are not strategic thinkers, they are good at imitation (ie imitating the US), but they have no strategic understanding of complex dynamics.

Why is it not a part of common knowledge... As a child of 80s I was always aware of the '62 loss but this victory was never a part of any discussion, nor did it find any mention in any of the popular student reference books. In fact a vast majority are still absolutely unaware that such an event occurred.

As an Indian, if you are getting bit worried about current Indo-China scenario, then that book about 1962 Nathu la incident is must read for you. Indian army has out grown 1967. 1967 pretty much set the template on how Indians deal with Chinese. Dominate hights, and make them realise the foolhardiness of their designs. This is exactly what's happening now also. Chinese have never been able to push Indians hard after 1967

One point to add at 10:12 Indira Gandhi did gave the permission to use artillery immediately. And Sagat, after decimating the Chinese frontliners, wanted to further counterattack the Chinese - Delhi DIDN'T gave the permission & that plan was cancelled.
