CCP is no good friend to be an ally with, but with past presidents, it was a sign of struggle. We did not see it coming when they said "for exploration," but in the end, they made an artificial island, slowly dumping soil in the EEZ of the Philippines. I think it was in the 2000s, I think. When the US left the base, everything changed, and China was not afraid of trespassing on our territory because they knew the Philippines was not prepared and had a weak military presence. The real reason fo this was to make philippines a land based for taiwan invasion.
