He has a ton of great rap I'm sure you'd be blown away by, but dont skip his other stuff as well. Its just as worthy of a listen. And the sickness wasn't a metaphor, he's been dealing with undiagnosed (until a couple years ago, but 10+ years of undiagnosed) Lyme Disease. Would love if you hit a few of his songs per reaction (I think a rap song + a nonrap song per video would be amazing, but thats just me), and DEFINITELY don't fuck up and do The Tales of Jenny/Screech/Violet trilogy in separate videos, its a connected story and you'll want to pay attention and follow along closely.

@angiekimmel84643 ай бұрын
I cant stop watching reactions to this song. Its amazing how many relate to this song. And how many different ways it relates. The only thing i havent heard ANYONE comment on yet though. Is how he says "There are no real winners in physiological war fare. There are victims and there are students!" Everyone seems to comment on the victim side but the student side is just as important. Yes, you may be a victim but you are a student as well. Learning what is means to be human and not perfect. Both light and dark. Its just absolutely amazing. I get cold chills every single time i listen to this song.
@DaProlifik110 ай бұрын
Ren has said himself that he is not religious, but basically likes to use its imagery as a metaphor for other things. The dude is so talented and diverse. You have many reactions ahead. I suggest starting with the first track off his new album called Seven Sins. Its a masterpiece.
@Thomas.Saunders10 ай бұрын
Yeah, this here 👆👆
@ct562510 ай бұрын
Yes, and he used religion in this song specifically to bring down the myth that mental health is driven by some kind of all-powerful supernatural being. When people who are suffering are lied to and told that it's some gargantuan supernatural power they can't have hope of fighting against, it makes everything worse. Ren brings it down to the human level, making it possible to defeat it.
@tenshimoon9 ай бұрын
Yeah, not now anyway - he **did** say he actually believed in and followed christianity in the past during his lowest moments with his illness, and was so desperate to get better that he actually went to faith healers endorsed by whichever church(es) he went to. He even described an incident where, during a time his beliefs back then had him trying different things, that his brain told him to do something rather bizarre because he had the idea it would "work" for his healing (he also acknowledged that his psychosis played a role in some of his behaviours with trying certain things in the hopes of being healed). So regardless of what his beliefs are nowadays, this is actually another big reason why spiritual symbolism and imagery has played a huge role in his lyrics, and seems to continue to play a role, because of how his past beliefs have influenced him and his journey, and where he is now. He's representing a part of himself from his own past and the beliefs he at least had back then. He's also symbolically equating the devil with his negative, dark side and Jesus with his positive light side, and using that imagery of a spiritual battle between Good vs Evil to represent his own inner battles with himself and his 2 different sides (light vs dark). He even outright mentions this regarding the inner psychological warfare in his monologue at the end, when he spoke candidly about his inner battles between light and dark. I get the impression he's more agnostic now, or even simply spiritual and open-minded, sans religion.
@premeditatedplan54179 ай бұрын
I think the point of what Ren is saying is outside of Religion. Certainly religion is there as a metaphor. Given he is English hardly surprising. The use of the metaphor though is a means of communicating something that most of us have a shared 'understanding' of which is not the same as belief.
@StrifeA2173 ай бұрын
@@premeditatedplan5417 your not wrong but to be honest about it your not going to pull that kind of imagery out without having immersed yourself in the faith to some degree.

Oh look, some more people fell into the Ren rabbit-hole... welcome, take a seat, now look at the huge variety and depth of Ren's music and videos. Many are 'one take' - sometimes both music and video one take, sometimes just the video... but it's always so darn creative. Sometimes it's more lighthearted and fun, sometimes it's a full gut-punch. Ren has inspired many of us, and yes, helped a lot of people, with his open dialogue about mental health and Su*cide. And he is such a humble kid. I'm a middle age english woman, and I adore this lad. I'm sure your chat will direct you where to go next on the Ren journey, but I'm lost, there is just so much good stuff. The irony in 'Hi Ren' lyrics is the line about 'where is your top ten hit' - he actually ended up with No 1 Album in UK, when Sick Boi dropped late last year! I think it did pretty well in US too! Us 'RENegades' take it all very seriously :D It's a heck of a journey, enjoy the ride!

Loved your reaction! I definitely think the next 2 songs you should do by him is "Sick boi" and "Genesis" (besides the official video for "Genesis" there is also a fire acoustic version ). Ren contracted Lyme disease when he was younger, which went incorrectly diagnosed by doctors for about 8 yrs, which completely destroyed him physically, mentally, spiritually etc. So all the success he is now experiencing he definitely had to claw and scratch and fight for. The more Ren you listen too, the sooner you will realize that continual flow switch ups is one of his trademarks and he can rap rap. If you want some examples.of this check out songs such as "The Hunger," "Ocean," "Losing It," and "Down on the Beat." You will probably love his "Money Game" trilogy of songs as well. It's amazing to see people still discovering Ren. I must have seen hundreds of Hi Ren reactions now and it never gets old. The realisation that they are watching something profound, something with substance, compared to the 99% of modern music that is just vapid noise, is always a joy. Ren ins't actually religious by the way, he just likes the metaphorical nature of religious imagery and stories. But there's nothing wrong with relating to it that way. This was a fantastic, thoughtful breakdown of a piece of music that I don't think will be fully appreciated until decades later. Thanks, I really enjoyed it, and am now keen on checking out more of your stuff. As for the religious aspect. I believe that the way Ren leaves it ambiguous is one of the most impressive things about the songwriting on display here. If you happen to subscribe to a particular established ideology, then, great, interpret it to fit that ideology and enjoy; if you happen to surf on a more fluid and dynamic metaphysical belief-system, then, great, build your own adventure and enjoy. Either way, it's clear that he is referencing an incredibly relatable, human reaction to the state of living in this world. This is the root of great art.

You gotta hear 'Losing It' , his retake on the EDM track by Fisher highlighting his rap and beat box skills! On the other hand you can't find a bad track by Ren. He's always different, original, insightful and so much careful planning goes into these videos, mostly done in one shot with his videographer Sam Perry-Falvey. Sometimes it's tears and sometimes just for fun. He always sets himself a challenge for each song; something that is purely acapella (Loco), a dirty song that they will play on the radio (Uninvited), a song that leaves people in tears (Jenny and Screech), a song/video that's completely filled with Easter eggs (Animal Flow), a song that asks people to change their lives (Money Game 1/2/3). Enjoy it all!

Generally, the interpretation was ok, but the religious slant was a miss. Ren tends to use it as a metaphor rather than "gospel". This performance relates to *HIS* "Demons" and his voyage out of *HIS* dark place. . Ref his line (often misheard) "Ferocious, persistent, immortal like you, we're a coin, minted different sides" . He faced up to himself.

Ren is not just a brilliant artist but a genuinely good human being who wants to inspire positive change in the world. Hope to see you deep down the Ren rabbit hole with the rest of us 🐰🕳️

Totally just quit watching what I was watching when I saw the notification come through! He writes all his own music, produces all his own videos, and is the king of 1 take videos (this is a live 1 take). Y'all would love Illest of Our Time or The Hunger after listening to more of your music. Thank you for this. My heart is so happy right now!

Not to be a downer but this particular vid isn’t a one take. (He does a lot of them) this IS live but the video is a compilation of the four takes they did.
@joelmastrobattisto42210 ай бұрын
This is actually a one take, they shot multiple cameras at the same time. But they always played the song all the way through, they tried it numerous times before they got the one that they actually wanted. But what was filmed was filmed on the same performance from beginning to end.
@CreativePhotoWS10 ай бұрын
@@joelmastrobattisto422 unfortunately that is incorrect. Watch carefully. You will see the mic appear and disappear on footage used from different takes and also his gown length variations. I train people to ‘see’ as a photographer for the last 40 years. For me those variations stand out. Even Ren himself said when they got home he thought they’d stuffed it and had nothing useful until he put it all together and showed Connor and his reaction to it made him know they had something that works. It doesn’t diminish the art of this song but saying this is footage from one single shoot through (also impossible as you can’t have a camera man standing up close and wide and the next second show a full length frame without the camera man in it) does diminish the effort involved in his actual one takes such as MG1
@loriculver728210 ай бұрын
You are the one who is wrong. There are numerous interviews with Ren and the director, Sam, that describe the making of the video. It is a live one take. They did four takes before they got kicked out of the building. There are three cameras set up. The microphone is always there. It just moves around a bit and is under the guitar strap a bit. They took the best take of the music, and it is one take. They took the spoken word part from another of the four takes, and that is the only cut.

I've never been jealous of someone not knowing something I do. Until now! I'm jealous you have every amazing Ren (and occasionally friends) performance to discover. You'll not be sorry for diving in here for you'll find an evolution in music. Ren is a rapper, singer, vocalist, performer, instrumentalist, and all round visionary. Subbed for mor Ren, everything Ren. His catalogue is long, and his journey has been filled with challenges, but you can't keep him down. The cream always rises and the rest of the world better watch out!

Hi guys! I have watched reactions to 'Hi Ren' so many times that I ony dip in now and again. I have never seen anyone nail it like you two! Right from the start you were onto the concept of the inner dialogue and picking up on the lyrics (maybe your 'rappers ears' help with this!). I hope you do many more Ren reactions because I for one will be watching! Cheers from someone with that funny accent!

You have just entered a massive rabbit hole, welcome to the RENegades. Ren Gill is such a talented artist. His poetry and lyrics are amazing, he can sing, rap, play guitar, piano and a bit of drums. The best follow up song to this one would be Sick Boi. He was also in a band called The Big Push, they are amazing.
@im2yz4u1710 ай бұрын
What I find very interesting about Ren is his ability to Enunciate. He is generally stacatto in his delivery and enunciates words with emphesis. Now the accent he does trop the 'T' sounds very often with seemingly is offputting to American ears. However, he freaking plays with words and stretches the sounds so much that he generates a wider use of words for his rhyme schemes. Very few rappers can do that.
@debrashrider406210 ай бұрын
I recently heard that dropping those "t's" from the middle of words is common among the Welsh that also speak English. Considering he is from Wales, born and raised it makes sense.

😂 Lol guys I'm just gonna to tell you now, your channel just went up like 40% as far as likes and views and comments. Brothers, Ren is a musical Force of Nature. He's a walking gift. We, his fan base are known as RENegades and we all tend to love him - and each other - as if we were related 😂. But trust me dude you will too. If I'm not subbed up already I'm going to sub up just to watch you guys go on this journey with the rest of us. LOL you have no idea what you've stumbled into. You're going to love this artist and so is your channel. This guy's musical talents seem have no bounds. His trilogies, _Tales_ and _Money Game_ are actual works of art, just like _Hi Ren_ is. Couple that with the fact that the guy is a class human being and loves to collab with other independent artists and the whole package comes together man. Welcome I'm so glad to welcome another future pair of RENegades 😉

Well done guys. Renegades will be here for you. I subbed. My 2 favorites are Seven Sins, a real masterpiece and Murderer, acoustic version. But whatever you direction you go will be magic. Ren us a beautiful soul and he uses his pkatform to shine lught in the place of darkness he came from with chronic physical and mental illness and constant pain. He has been getting treatment fir more than a year in Canada for the damage done to him by 7 years if undiagnosed Lyme disease and the mental illness caused by that ad well. Music is his religion.
