Easily their best album Heavy, not over tech for the sake of it and Portnys drumming was pure fire
@LeoBassCovers23 жыл бұрын
Though Scenes from a Memory will always be my favourite, I do agree. Definitely an album anyone could get into
@goncalobaia15747 ай бұрын
Absolutely right. For me this era of Dream Theater was the epitome of good prog, perfect balance between beauty and ugly, jazzy technical and fiery emotion. Not too technically tiresome, not too pushed in feeling and predictability, just perfect, everything makes sense.

If you want to play this on a 4 string, tune it down a half step and play that first note an octave higher. That's how i do it anyway.
@Arcmed_TM6 ай бұрын
interesting, but it doesn't end up sounding with the same weight in the notes!
@yasserwallaby58356 ай бұрын
@@Arcmed_TM of course, but not everybody can afford a 5 string. I actually learn this bassline by ear with an acoustic guitar, because i can't afford a bass at the time, and I badly need to learn this song.

In this generation it's good to buy a 5 string at first place when buying a bass

John Myung is a legit genius. Dream Theater are very lucky to have him as a bassist.

God I love this song, also happens to be one of the few Dream Theater songs (on the more difficult side) that I can play all the way through lol. I didn't realize that there was an Octaver during the bridge, I normally just play the intro of the bridge on the higher register and then the rest on the lower register. Great work as always!
@jell-ohammer24763 жыл бұрын
Also at 10:08, I don't know why I always flick my hand all the way to the 2nd fret on the B string instead of just playing it an octave above lmao.

One of the rare songs where Myung actually uses an effect that isn't distortion or chorus... thanks as always!

Yeah that 2nd fret is such bullshit. I think I also mentioned it in the description.

Fantastic cover. Love all the information in the description. I agree with the part going from the 11th to the 2nd, not sure why anyone thinks that's feasible. Maybe it is with lots of practice, but what you did sounds great.
@LeoBassCovers23 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's even possible with a lot of practice. It is just too big of a gap haha. Thank you very much!
@loicbourdellon68063 жыл бұрын
@@LeoBassCovers2 Maybe on a 6 strings bass, it's possible as you play near the 6th fret ?
@LeoBassCovers23 жыл бұрын
I think it's just a case of recording the one riff in the studio. Pause. Continue recording with the 2nd fret. You also don't hear a slide or anything that sounds like he rushed to the 2nd fret. Possible with a 6 string sure, but not really possible to make it sound like the studio version

That bridge with the octaver gives me big later-era King Crimson vibes. I love it. Have you considered trying Panic Attack? It’s one of my favorite DT songs and I’ve seen it done on a 5-string before.
@LeoBassCovers23 жыл бұрын
I have, but there's some really difficult parts in that song. Also not sure if you need a 6 string for it.
@ElliYeetYT3 жыл бұрын
Definitely a 6 String. I can tell from hearing the isolated bass track. If anybody has a 6-string for the song the tuning is most likely Drop A.
@LeoBassCovers23 жыл бұрын
Then it's not gonna happen I guess.. :(
@voltscreamratty3 жыл бұрын
@@LeoBassCovers2 Yeah, the way I've seen it played on a 5 was in Drop A, I think.

Tuning's whole step down on 5/6 strings, opening lick is pedaled on the C string. I don't think 6 strings are really necessary but then it's been years since I covered it. So who knows
