I met this guy while on a week long trip to Montana. I'm a Michigan native and we got to talking. He has firsthand experience of my home river, and told me a fly to try that I'd never used. Went back home, they don't sell it at any flyshops around here, so I had to tie it myself. I used it and caught the biggest brown I've ever caught on the river. The fly is now a staple of my box, and I've caught numerous 20+ inchers on that fly. The fly is a crane fly larva. Thanks Kelly!!

The renaissance he mentions is awesome. I’m a newer fly maker with less than 4 years of experience. The amount of people I see my age and younger getting into tying and fishing is awesome! This is the direction the outdoors should be headed- with younger generations continuing the traditions.

Kelly...you're right! The kids today, by that I mean in their twenties, are taking this sport to a whole new level. I have fished with several and when I teach them something, the next time I fish with them they have taken what I showed them to a whole new level beyond my imagination. Especially saltwater fly fishing is changing every year. I truly enjoy their enthusiasm and having the opportunity to learn from the young. Great stuff Kelly, thank you.

funny when he told the story how he started tying its the same for me i started when i was 7 and my flies were shit i still have some of them and my father used to tell me how great they were and somewhere when i was around the age of 11 they started too look like something i had the chance to tie twice together with petitjean and thats when i really started to improve now at 23 he only fishes with my flies and i tie alot for coworkers my uncle and so on and everytime they show me the fish they caught with my flies it feels like a part of me was there too and caught that fish with him its really a great feeling!

Walt Grau. He is a great fly angler. We had a chance trip with him. Our hired guide from BBT had a really bad knee injury the day before our trip and arranged for Walt to take us. He guided my buddy and I on a steelhead trip and introduced us to spey casting on the PM (in Mi.). He definitely needed some stiff drinks after suffering with our skills and constant tangles. I'm trying to get back to the Madison in 2018 and will say hi to Kelly if we make it.

love the honesty in this guy , i still believe three inch native brook trout , or the dry fly purist , have never swung a fly threw the meat of a hole ,notta , behind the boulder , inch of the bank thirty yards down in steelhead green walk9ing speed five foot pockets notta then you see the tailout , followed by still two foot structurless desert next quarter mile , launch at the tail out give it an extra pause go to stip her back , when your rod gets yanked clear outta your hands chrome thirty inch rocket with fly launch six feet sky ward land with no splash and before you can get your palm to the reel thirty yards smoke off down threw that desert as you watch the back lash appear and vanish , one chance outta hundred , you come tight as your sixty yards of line flies over your head and your halloween bugger sets solid in a weeping willow as your chrome buddy gives you another tail walk fuck you encore , and you dont have anothrer bite all day , but at 3am 12 hours from now you know sleep is a silly idea as it was when you were six and you just heard santa land on your roof , so you might as well drive that fifty three miles up the 101 in the pre dawn magic as frosty dew silently coats banks and bolders even little ice on the guides as the sun wont hit you in the valley til 9am , by noon you will just have your tshirt , as you release your tenth sea liced bold ocean dwelling radical rainbow trout that parties with orca megaldon great whites ,only to battlle threw the gauntlet of sea birds ,lions elephant seals , the three most overseen endangered planet on the left coast , not as cute as my cabbage eating manatee , but just as prevalent ,,, and you tell yourself your not whole foods material , at least not come october through april , as you spend dawn to dusk ninety nine days in a row , second guessing your selection , cadance as its been seven days since you turned a fish the tenth landed inthat three hour window , but you tell yourself i could go two hours to the west and land twenty rainbows on dries , if you hadnt been stung by the ghost silhouette of 20 plus pound fourth trip back to where it was born ocean dwelling trout

I've caught big browns fishing for steelhead many, many times. I've always looked at that as a bonus and a welcome surprise to a great day of steelheading. And I've been such a steelhead junkie for so long I can't say that I've ever specifically targeted or hunted HUGE Browns. So I won't knock what I've never tried and failed at or actually experienced. But seeing the man in the silver suit open his 5 gallon bucket mouth to eat an inch and a half Palalo Worm off Long Key was my transformative moment with a fly rod. Not much has made very much sense to me or jacked my heart like that did. I can't afford Tarpon Fishing as often as I'd like. I'm kind of sorry I tried my hand at something I can't realistically pursue even though I did everything right that day and it felt great. So I think I might want to try this slob brown thing on a 7-weight. It's far more realistic for a meager man with college aged kids.

As Amy & John Hazel eloquently put it in the film "DRIFT" ....."Fly fishing is all about the grab, and in my eyes I wholeheartedly agree with them.Everything else pertaining to fly fishing leading up to, and after that moment, is just a ways to means. The cast, then the split second Adrenalin rush, let alone elation that surges through my veins when I feel the fish grab my fly, Is the reason why I've spent thousands of (Euros/Pounds & Rands) on equipment, dedicated thousands of hours creating all manner of imitative patters on my vice & traveled thousands of kilometers around the world, all in the pursuit of that single most defining moment in fishing ............................. "The Grab" So yes Kelly, you hit the nail on the head mate with regards to streamer fishing brotha!!!! Awesome interview looks like a good series...keep up the good work.

Oh, Mr. Galloup... you just HAVE to get somewhere that holds BIG native brook trout. Say, like Moosehead Lake. You catch a 5lb brookie and you will be fighting it for a while. Browns... not so much. Big native brookies? It's a big fight. These streamers would be great for them, also. Go up to Moosehead, hit the shorelines between mid May to mid June, and you're gonna see some serious action.

How much for 10 of your own tied streamers I'm here in Ireland would pay for postage on top of that no problem. Your a good at perfecting them. Here is hard toget dear hair of good quality and very little quantity. Maybe I should be buying my tie flying materials off of you. You can't judge the quality of hair and feather materials on ebay.
