The problem is the stereotype of an American is quite negative, out of personal experience the stereotype is Americans being ignorant, disrespectful, feeling like they are better than the locals. The problem is the Americans that travel and CONFIRM these stereotypes, those that DO act disrespectful, are ignorant to the local laws and feel superior etc etc.. This just confirms the stereotype in their heads and often ruin it for actual normal respectful Americans. I wouldn't go as far as advising against traveling or not endorsing it. People should just do some more "research" before they travel so they understand the laws and cultures they're going to and as long as you do that and be respectful you won't have issues in most places
